Chapter 67: The One Who Failed

The silence didn't last.

Because it couldn't.

Not with something like this.

Standing at the center of it all.

Dravok's form stabilized further.

Edges sharpening.

Presence deepening.

The pressure didn't return as before.

It condensed.

Focused.

Decisive.

"…You disrupt progression."

The words carried weight.

Not curiosity anymore.

Conclusion.

Kade didn't move.

"…You mean I interfere," he replied calmly.

A pause.

"…Correct."

The basin trembled.

Not from force.

From intent.

"…Then I'll finish it."

Those words changed everything.

No more observation.

No more testing.

This was the end of the experiment.

"…Kael."

Kade's voice cut through instantly.

Sharp.

Focused.

"…Listen carefully."

Kael turned.

Still shaking.

Still standing.

"…You don't have time for this" Bram started.

"…He does," Kade cut in.

A pause.

"…Because this is why he's here."

Silence.

Because now.

The truth was coming.

Kade stepped forward.

The pressure surged toward him.

But bent.

Redirected.

Held at bay.

"…Years ago," Kade began,

"…I came here."

The team froze.

Even Dravok.

Paused.

"…Not like this," he continued.

"…Not ready."

A pause.

"…But strong enough to think I was."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…You fought it."

Kade shook his head.

"…No."

A pause.

"…I tried to dominate it."

That landed hard.

"…And?" Nyra asked quietly.

Kade's gaze remained fixed forward.

"…I succeeded."

Silence.

Confusion.

Then.

"…For a moment."

The weight of those words.

Crushing.

"…I broke its pressure," Kade said.

"…Forced it to yield."

A pause.

"…And in doing that"

His voice lowered.

"…I became part of it."

The basin pulsed.

Dravok's form sharpened again.

"…Assimilation attempt," it said.

Kade didn't deny it.

"…I lost control," he continued.

"…Not of my power"

A pause.

"…Of myself."

Kael felt something shift inside him.

Understanding.

"…You didn't fail because you were weak," he said.

Kade's voice came low.

"…I failed because I tried to win the wrong way."

Silence.

Because that.

Was the lesson.

"…You can't overpower this," Kade said.

"…You can only exist against it."

Kael's breathing steadied.

His mind racing.

Connecting everything.

The pressure.

The layers.

The adaptation.

"…It's not something to defeat," he said slowly.

A pause.

"…It's something to stand against."

Kade nodded.

"…Now you understand."

Dravok moved.

Fully this time.

One step forward.

And the entire basin collapsed inward slightly.

The pressure returned.

Not testing.

Ending.

"…Conclusion reached."

A pause.

"…You are unnecessary."

The force exploded outward.

Not layered.

Not adaptive.

Absolute.

Everything dropped.

Nyra.

Bram.

Tovin.

Lira—Who had just begun to stand

Forced back down.

Only two remained standing.

Kade.

And Kael.

"…Now," Kade said.

A pause.

"…we fight."

Kael stepped forward.

The Forgotten surged.

Not wildly.

Not recklessly.

Controlled.

Layered.

Alive.

The pressure hit.

And split.

Not perfectly.

Not cleanly.

But enough.

Kade moved beside him.

His presence expanded.

Not clashing.

Not resisting.

Balancing.

Two forces.

Different.

Aligned.

"…Don't follow me," Kade said.

A pause.

"…Stand with me."

Kael nodded.

Then they moved.

Not forward.

Through.

Kade shifted first.

Breaking the direct line of force.

Kael followed.

Redirecting what remained.

Dravok responded instantly.

Pressure shifted.

Reforming.

Targeting both.

"…Dual resistance," it said.

A pause.

"…Unstable."

Kade smirked slightly.

"…That's the point."

He stepped again.

Closer.

The pressure surged.

But Kael caught it.

Split it.

Redirected.

Then Kael moved.

And Kade adjusted.

Holding the space open.

They weren't stronger.

They weren't faster.

But together.

They created something new.

A gap.

Small.

Temporary.

But real.

Dravok's form flickered.

For the first time.

"…Irregular."

The word carried weight.

Not expected.

Not planned.

Kael stepped into the gap.

Closer than before.

Closer than anyone had ever been.

The void-face loomed above him.

Endless.

Crushing.

"…You persist beyond logic," Dravok said.

Kael looked up.

Unshaken.

"…That's because you're thinking about it wrong," he said.

A pause.

"…I'm not trying to beat you."

Silence.

"…I'm becoming something that can stand here."

The basin trembled.

Dravok's form shifted.

Not outward.

Inward.

Focused.

Serious.

"…Then prove it."

The pressure surged again.

Stronger than before.

Beyond anything yet.

Kade stepped forward.

Matching it.

Kael followed.

Dividing it.

Together.

They held.

Not perfectly.

Not easily.

But they held.

And for the first time.

Dravok didn't just observe.

It responded.

Fully.
