Chapter 72: A World That Turns

They didn't rest.

They didn't speak much either.

The journey back to Eryndor was fast.

But heavy.

Because the further they moved.

The clearer it became.

The world had already changed.

By the time the city walls came into view.

They could feel it.

Not pressure.

Tension.

Layers of it.

Human.

Political.

Unstable.

"…Something's wrong," Nyra said quietly.

Bram scoffed faintly.

"…Yeah. No kidding."

But this was different.

The gates.

Usually controlled.

Disciplined.

Were crowded.

Guards.

Messengers.

Faction banners everywhere.

Too many.

"…They're mobilizing," Tovin observed.

"…For what?" Lira asked.

Kael didn't answer.

Because he already knew.

"…For me."

Silence.

That truth.

Sat heavy.

As they approached.

The gates opened immediately.

Not as welcome.

As expectation.

And waiting inside.

Was the Order.

Fully assembled.

Dozens of armored figures.

Formations tight.

Weapons ready.

Not drawn.

But close.

At the front.

The same man from the balcony.

Silver armor.

Sharp gaze.

Authority.

"…Kael," he said.

No greeting.

No warmth.

"…You will come with us."

Bram stepped forward instantly.

"…Or what?" he snapped.

The man didn't look at him.

"…Or we escalate this situation beyond control."

A pause.

"…And I would prefer not to."

Kael stepped forward.

Calm.

Centered.

"…Name," he said.

The man held his gaze.

"…Commander Rhyen. Order of Eryndor."

A pause.

"…And you are no longer just a guild asset."

Silence.

"…You are a variable."

Nyra's expression hardened.

"…He just saved"

"…He altered the entire Resonance field," Rhyen cut in.

A pause.

"…Across the continent."

That landed.

Because this.

Was bigger than they thought.

"…We felt it," he continued.

"…Every faction did."

His gaze sharpened.

"…And now they're moving."

Kael didn't react.

Because he already knew that part.

"…The Devourer Lords," he said.

A ripple moved through the gathered forces.

Even Rhyen paused.

"…You've seen them."

Not a question.

A realization.

Kael nodded once.

"…They're awake."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Because that meant.

Everything just accelerated.

Rhyen exhaled slowly.

"…Then we don't have time for uncertainty."

A pause.

"…Which is exactly why you're coming with us."

Bram stepped forward again.

"…No. He's not your weapon."

Rhyen finally looked at him.

Cold.

"…He's not yours either."

That hit.

Because it was true.

Kael raised a hand slightly.

Stopping them.

"…I'll go," he said.

Everyone turned to him.

"…Kael—" Lira started.

He shook his head.

"…We don't have time to fight each other."

A pause.

"…Not anymore."

His gaze locked with Rhyen's.

"…But understand this."

The air shifted slightly.

Subtly.

"…I'm not under your control."

Rhyen held his gaze.

Then nodded once.

"…For now… I'll accept that."

Not agreement.

A temporary truce.

Inside Eryndor – War Chamber

The room was already filled.

Leaders from multiple factions.

Guild representatives.

Strategist.

Even those who normally never gathered.

All here.

All tense.

All waiting.

Kael stepped in.

And the room shifted instantly.

Every gaze locked onto him.

Some fearful.

Some curious.

Some hostile.

"…So that's him."

"…He doesn't look like much."

"…That's what makes it worse."

Whispers spread.

Uncontrolled.

Kael ignored them.

Walked forward.

Unshaken.

Rhyen stepped beside him.

"…This is the individual responsible for the Resonance shift," he announced.

No introduction.

No protection.

Just exposure.

"…And potentially the only one capable of understanding what comes next."

Silence fell.

Then.

"…Or the one who caused it," a voice cut in.

A woman stepped forward.

Dark robes.

Eyes sharp.

"…We don't know what he's become."

A pause.

"…And that makes him a threat."

Murmurs of agreement.

Kael didn't flinch.

Because again.

That was also true.

"…Say what you want," Bram muttered behind him.

"…He's the only reason we're still alive."

"…And that may be exactly why we should eliminate him now," another voice added.

The tension spiked instantly.

Hands moved toward weapons.

The room fractured.

On the edge of violence.

And then.

Kael stepped forward.

One step.

The air changed.

Not forcefully.

Not aggressively.

But undeniably.

The pressure in the room.

Shifted.

Everyone felt it.

Not crushing.

Not overwhelming.

But present.

Controlled.

Defined.

"…I'm not your enemy," Kael said.

Calm.

Steady.

"…But I won't be your tool either."

Silence.

Because now.

They understood.

Not fully.

But enough.

This wasn't someone they could control.

"…Then what are you?" the woman asked.

Kael's eyes didn't waver.

"…The one who stands when they arrive."

A pause.

"…And they are coming."

The weight of that.

Settled over everything.

Because deep down.

They all knew it was true.

Rhyen stepped forward again.

"…Then we stop debating."

A pause.

"…We prepare for war."

No one argued.

Because there was no time left to.

Far Beyond Eryndor

The Devourer Lords moved.

Not toward the city.

Toward each other.

Toward convergence.

Because now.

There was something worth gathering for.

And his name.

Had already reached them.

Kael.
