Chapter 127: The Road to the Last Star

The ancient city did not sleep.

Neither did Kael. The words from the observatory echoed in his mind.

The Wanderer's child is coming.

Not the Wanderer's descendant.

Not the heir of a god.The Wanderer's child.

It felt... personal. As though somewhere, something had been waiting specifically for him.He wasn't sure whether to find that comforting or terrifying.Probably both.

Morning in a Dead City. The artificial dawn of the Aurelith city slowly brightened.Silver light spilled across empty streets and towering buildings. For a brief moment—It looked alive.

Then the silence returned.A city pretending to still have people. The thought saddened Kael more than he expected.

The others gathered in the Garden of Memory.Nobody had slept particularly well.

Even Varyn looked tired.Which meant something was seriously wrong.

The Decision.Kaelen stood before the group.

Arms crossed.Expression unreadable.

"We have two choices."A pause.

"We return to Solaryn and report what we've found."Everyone nodded."Or..."

He looked at the glowing constellation above Kael's bracelet."We continue."Silence.

Because everyone already knew the answer.

Even before Kaelen said it.The road had changed. This wasn't simply an expedition anymore. This was history unfolding.

The King's InstructionsElric finally spoke.

"The King told us to bring back answers."

A pause."And if we couldn't..."

A small smile appeared."Bring back good questions."Varyn sighed.

"We have enough questions to fill a library."

Lyra looked offended."That's actually not that many."Everyone ignored her.The Caretaker's Farewell. Before leaving, the expedition returned to the Preservation Vault.

The Caretaker waited beside the sleeping Aurelith. As if it had known they would come.

Which, honestly—It probably had."Will you stay here?"Kael asked."Affirmative."

"You'll be alone."The construct was silent for several moments.

Then:"I have been alone for ten thousand years."

The answer hurt more than anyone expected.Kael looked toward the endless rows of crystal chambers. The dead city.

The silent streets.The forgotten civilization.

Then back to the Caretaker.

"You don't have to wait anymore."Silence.

Long silence. Then—For the first time. The construct smiled.Very slightly.

"I believe... I would like to see the stars again."Nobody spoke.Because somehow

That felt like a victory.Returning to the Surface. The climb out of the city took nearly an entire day.

The staircase seemed shorter somehow.

Perhaps because they carried answers now.

Or perhaps because they carried more questions.By the time they reached the surface—The sun was setting.

The Valley of Echoes greeted them with silence. And then—A bird sang.

Everyone froze.A second bird answered.

Then another. The valley was no longer silent.

The echoes had ended.Something had changed. The world itself seemed different.

Lighter.

As if a burden had finally been lifted.

A Message Arrives.Three days into their return journey, they encountered an Aegis courier. The rider looked exhausted.

Dust-covered.Sleep-deprived.

And relieved to see them."You've been impossible to find."Kaelen accepted the sealed message. The royal crest gleamed in the sunlight.A letter from King Godfrey.

He opened it.Read it.Then frowned.

Nobody liked that."What happened?"

Kael asked.

Kaelen handed him the letter.

The message was brief.

Ancient ruins are awakening across the kingdom.Return immediately.

And bring the heir with you.Kael looked up.

"The heir?"Everyone slowly turned toward him."...Oh."The Wider World. As they continued south, they began hearing rumors.

Travelers spoke of strange lights in forgotten places.Ancient monuments glowing beneath the moon.Ruins emerging from beneath lakes.Old roads appearing where no roads existed before.

A mountain in Valkyra had split open.

A tower had appeared along the Storm Coast. An ancient library had been discovered beneath Lunaris.

History itself seemed to be waking.

Bram's Letter. At another village, another courier waited. This letter wasn't from the King.It was from Bram.

Kael immediately smiled.

The letter was messy.

The handwriting somehow worse than before."We found another weird ruin."

"Please tell me you're not finding weird ruins too."A pause.

"Actually, knowing you, you're definitely finding weird ruins."

"Anyway, come back alive."

Kael laughed. Then carefully folded the letter.

The distance between them felt strangely small.Under the Stars

That night, the group camped atop a hill.

The sky was clear.Countless stars stretched overhead.Kael found himself staring upward again. The stars no longer felt distant.

They felt...Familiar.

Footsteps approached.Kaelen.

The older man stood beside him.

For several minutes—Neither spoke.

Then:"You've changed."Kael looked at him.

"That's usually what happens after discovering your ancestor is a forgotten god."

To his surprise—Kaelen laughed.

A real laugh.Brief.But genuine.

Then his expression softened."I didn't mean that."A pause."You carry yourself differently."

Kael looked back toward the stars.Maybe he did.

Maybe discovering how large the world truly was changed a person. The Mentor's Advice

"Don't let it become a burden."Kaelen said quietly."The bloodline." "The title."

"The expectations."He folded his arms.

"They're just words."A pause.

"You decide what they mean."

Kael thought about that.

Then nodded. For once—Kaelen looked almost proud.

Far away.At the Observatory of the Last Star.

Ancient mechanisms turned.

Silver light flowed through forgotten halls.

Doors unlocked.Stars shifted across ancient instruments. And at the top of the tower

A figure of starlight stood waiting.

Watching the horizon.Watching the road.

Patient. As though it had all the time in the world. And perhaps it did.
