Chapter 149: The First Gate

Thirteen Days Until Arrival

Morning arrived with a gentle rain.

Not the violent storms that rolled across battlefields, but a soft spring rain that coated the white stone streets of the Royal Domain in a silver sheen. Water dripped from carved gargoyles perched on rooftops, while the scent of wet earth and fresh bread drifted through the waking city.

Market vendors laughed as they hurried to cover their stalls with colorful canvas awnings. Blacksmiths had already begun their work, and the rhythmic ring of hammer against steel echoed through the lower district like a steady heartbeat.

Above it all, the royal palace stood atop the Sunspire Hill, its ivory towers piercing the gray clouds. Golden banners bearing the crest of House Solvayne—a radiant sun surrounded by twelve rays—fluttered proudly despite the rain.

Kael stood alone on one of the palace balconies. His hand rested on the ancient bracelet around his wrist. It felt warmer than it had the night before. The King's Garden

Hidden behind the palace was a place few people were allowed to enter.

The Garden of First Light.

Unlike the carefully manicured gardens of noble estates, this place looked almost untouched. Ancient oak trees stretched their enormous branches toward the sky, their leaves glittering with droplets of rain. Narrow stone paths wound through fields of wildflowers that seemed to bloom without any gardener's care.At the very center of the garden grew a single enormous tree.

Its trunk was wider than a house.

Its bark shimmered with faint golden veins.

Its roots disappeared deep beneath the palace itself.King Godfrey was already waiting beneath its branches.

He wasn't wearing his royal robes.

Only a simple white tunic beneath a dark cloak. For a moment...

He looked less like a king...

And more like an old warrior.

"You came."

Godfrey said warmly.

"You summoned me."

Kael replied.

The king chuckled.

"A good knight obeys."

He looked toward the towering tree.

"A great knight asks why."

The Heartroot Tree

Godfrey placed a weathered hand upon the ancient bark.

Immediately, the golden veins within the tree brightened.

The air itself changed.

Kael felt the Aether around him become heavier.

Not oppressive...

Alive.

He could hear leaves rustling without wind.

Water flowing beneath the soil.

Even the slow pulse of the ancient tree itself.

It was as if the entire garden had begun breathing.

"This..."

Kael whispered.

"...is Resonance."

Godfrey nodded with quiet satisfaction.

"The Heartroot has stood here since before my family's kingdom existed."

He smiled softly.

"It doesn't give power."

"It reminds us that power already surrounds us."

The First Gate Opens

The bracelet suddenly grew hot.

Not painfully.

Urgently.

Silver light flowed through the engraved patterns covering its surface, spreading over Kael's arm like liquid moonlight.

Ancient symbols appeared one after another.

Some resembled stars.

Others looked like rivers.

A few resembled branches reaching toward the heavens.

Kael instinctively closed his eyes.

The moment he did—The world vanished.

The Inner World

He stood within complete darkness.

No ground.

No sky.

Only endless black.

Then...

One by one...

Tiny silver lights appeared.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Millions.

Each light floated through the darkness like stars.

They weren't stars.

They were Aether pathways.

Countless streams of living energy weaving together into an endless network.

Some burned brightly.

Others had gone dark long ago.

Some had been broken.

Some sealed.

A quiet voice echoed around him.

Neither male nor female.

Ancient.

Gentle.

"Every soul is born with pathways."

"Most awaken only those needed to survive."

"The Forgotten walked every path."

The lights shifted.

Seven enormous gates emerged from the darkness.

Each one larger than a mountain.

Each forged from a different material.

Stone.

Crystal.

Wood.

Gold.

Silver.

Obsidian.And the last...

A gate made entirely of moving starlight.

Only the first gate showed signs of opening.

The others remained tightly sealed.

Reality Returns

Kael gasped.

His eyes flew open.

He found himself kneeling beneath the Heartroot Tree.

Rain continued falling around him.

Only a few seconds had passed.

Yet it felt like hours.

King Godfrey watched silently.

"You saw something."

Kael nodded slowly.

"There were..."

He struggled to find the words.

"Gates."

The king's expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"So the legends were true."

He whispered to himself.

A King's Secret

Godfrey motioned for Kael to follow him.

Beneath the Heartroot Tree lay a hidden stone staircase spiraling into the earth.

The air grew cooler with every step.

Torches lit themselves as they descended.

Their flames burned gold instead of orange.

Eventually they reached an ancient chamber.

Circular.

Silent. Its walls were carved with murals older than the kingdom itself.

The murals depicted seven figures standing beneath a sky filled with silver stars.

One figure wore a familiar bracelet.

Another carried a walking staff.

One held no weapon at all.

Instead...He simply extended an open hand toward the others.

Kael stopped walking.

"Astraeus..."

Godfrey nodded.

"Our family has protected this chamber for generations."

"We never understood its purpose."

He looked directly at Kael.

"I believe it was waiting for you."

Elsewhere

Deep within Asterion...

Auren stood before a massive window overlooking the endless stars.

His reflection stared back at him.

Young.Calm.

Unchanging.

The guardian approached quietly.

"He opened the First Gate."

"I know."

Auren answered.

The guardian folded his arms.

"Should we be celebrating?"

Auren remained silent for several moments.

The smile on his face slowly faded.

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because every gate grants understanding..."

He whispered.

"...but it also demands something in return."

Outside the window...

The silver city drifted silently through the heavens.

Its towers reflected constellations that did not exist anywhere in the mortal world.

Far below...

One of Asterion's ancient bells rang once.

Its deep, haunting tone rolled across the empty streets like a promise remembered after ten thousand years.

The City Between Stars was almost home.
