Chapter 158: Before the Hunger — The Lord of Ruin (Part VII)

Ten Days Until Arrival

"Every civilization believes the end begins with war.It does not.It begins when people stop believing tomorrow can be better than today."The Lost Teachings of Astraeus

The tremor was over.

But the mountains had changed.

The towering peaks of Hrafnheim no longer felt eternal. Fine cracks stretched across cliffs that had stood untouched for centuries. Avalanches echoed in the distance throughout the day, and the wildlife behaved strangely.Entire flocks of ravens abandoned their nests.

The wolves disappeared from the forests.

Even the wind had changed.

It no longer carried the sharp scent of snow.

It smelled...Ancient.

The Council of Hearths

Word of Hrafnheim's generosity spread farther than anyone expected.

Within a week, elders from twelve northern villages gathered beneath the Great Hall.

Some arrived on horseback.

Others came by sled.

A few had walked for days through blizzards.

Each village had brought a gift.

Salt.

Iron.

Grain.

Medicinal herbs.

Not as payment,as trust.

Master Oren would one day record this gathering as The Council of Hearths—the first alliance of free settlements in northern history. It was not founded by kings.

It was founded by ordinary people refusing to survive alone.A King's Invitation

Among the visitors was a royal envoy from Hrafnheim's capital.

His armor bore the crest of a white raven soaring before a mountain.

He bowed before Torvald.

"By decree of King Harald Skallson..."

"The Crown requests the service of Garrick Ashborn."The forge fell silent.

Garrick stared at the messenger.

"My service?"

"The King has heard of your work."

"Your leadership."

"And"

The envoy glanced toward Astraeus.

"your companions."

Cassian folded his arms.

"The capital finally notices."

Astraeus smiled faintly.

"History often arrives late."

The Quiet Refusal

That evening, Garrick stood beside the frozen river. The invitation rested in his hands.

For most young men, serving the King would have been the greatest honor imaginable.

Yet...His eyes remained fixed on the refugee camp.

Children laughed while building snow forts from packed ice.Old women prepared soup over shared fires.Blacksmiths from three different villages repaired one another's tools. This was where he felt needed.

Torvald approached quietly.

"You've already decided."

Garrick nodded.

"I don't want glory."

"I want to stay."

His father placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Then tell the King."

Astraeus' Story

Later that night, Garrick found Astraeus watching the stars.

"Did you ever refuse a king?"

Garrick asked.

Astraeus laughed.

"I've refused several."

"You weren't afraid?"

"I was."

He admitted.

"But I learned something."

He pointed toward the constellations.

"The stars don't become brighter because a king notices them."

"They shine because it's their nature."

He looked at Garrick.

"The world will always try to tell you who you should become."

"Listen."

"But never surrender the right to decide for yourself."

The First Lie

Far away...In a forgotten valley buried beneath black stone.A man knelt before a crimson crystal. His face remained hidden beneath a hood.

He was neither king nor priest.

History would never remember his name.

Yet his choice would shape thousands of years. The crystal whispered.

Not with words.

With thoughts.Promises.

It showed him visions.

A world without hunger.

Without war.Without death.

"Only one sacrifice."

The whisper said.

"One life"

"to save millions."

The man hesitated.

Then,He reached toward the crystal.

The moment his fingers touched its surface

The whisper smiled.

The first lie had been accepted.

Auren's Concern

Back in Hrafnheim

Auren filled another notebook.

Maps.

Symbols.

Ancient languages.

Patterns in the recent tremors.

Nothing matched.

Nothing made sense.

Astraeus joined him.

"You've found something."

Auren nodded slowly.

"The earthquakes."

"The ancient shrine."

"The crimson light."

"They're connected."

"But not by Aether."

Astraeus' expression darkened.

"What then?"

Auren closed the notebook.

"I don't know."

"For the first time"

"I don't know."

That frightened him more than any monster.

The Shared Dream

That night

Everyone in the valley dreamed.

Not just Garrick.

Not just Astraeus.

Everyone.

They stood upon an endless plain beneath a sky with no stars.

In the distance...

A single tree stretched toward heaven.

Its roots bled crimson.

Its branches glowed silver.

Standing beneath it was a figure cloaked in darkness.

Its face could not be seen.

Its voice echoed across the dream.

"Everything ends."

The tree withered.

Mountains crumbled.

Cities turned to dust.

The oceans dried.

Then...A second figure appeared.

Wrapped in silver light.

Carrying only a walking staff.

It planted the staff into the ground.

The tree bloomed again.

Life returned.

The dream ended.

The Morning After

People awoke frightened.

Confused.

Children described the same tree.

Hunters described the same voices.

Even Cassian admitted he had seen the dream.Freya whispered a prayer.

The village elder looked toward Astraeus.

"You dreamed it too."

Astraeus nodded."I did."

"What does it mean?"

The Wanderer looked toward the distant mountains."It means"

He said quietly.

"We're running out of time."

Far above the mortal world

The silver city of Asterion drifted silently between the stars.

Its empty streets reflected constellations that had not yet been born.

Within its highest observatory

Auren's future self watched the memory unfold.

The Guardian stood beside him.

"You remember this night."

Auren nodded.

"I remember every face."

Every laugh.

Every promise.

Every person they failed to save.

His hand rested against the cold glass overlooking the world below.

"This"He whispered.

"was the last peaceful week before history changed forever."The stars shifted.

One by one

Seven constellations began to glow brighter than all the others.

The Seven Stars had been chosen.

None of them knew it.
