Chapter 167: Before the Hunger — The Lord of Depths (Part VIII: The First Crack)

Six Days Until Arrival

"Darkness rarely tears down the door.

It waits for someone to unlock it out of hope."

The Last Testament of the First Keeper

The city of Ilys-Kareth welcomed another sunrise.Golden light washed over its floating towers, illuminating countless crystal bridges suspended above the endless desert. Bells echoed from the observatories as astronomers announced the beginning of another day, while apprentices hurried through the streets with scrolls tucked beneath their arms.

To everyone else,It was another ordinary morning. To Maelor.

It felt like the beginning of something extraordinary. He had not slept.

The whisper from beneath the ancient door echoed through his thoughts.

Not constantly.Patiently.

As if it knew that true temptation never demanded an immediate answer.

The Burden of Silence

Thalenna noticed him immediately.

They had worked together for years.

Maelor was always composed.

Always meticulous.

Now his notes were disorganized.

He stared at books without turning their pages. When spoken to, he answered a heartbeat too late.

She approached him in the Hall of Maps.

"You look exhausted."

Maelor forced a smile.

"Just thinking."

"About the ruins?"

His expression shifted ever so slightly.

"Among other things."

Thalenna hesitated.

"If you ever need another mind to question your theories"

He smiled more sincerely.

"You always ask the questions I avoid."

She laughed.

"I'll take that as a compliment."

As she walked away, Maelor watched her disappear between the shelves.

A pang of guilt settled in his chest.

He had already decided not to tell anyone about the whisper.

Not because he wished to deceive them.

Because he feared they would stop him before he understood it.

Seraphel's Lesson

That afternoon, Seraphel gathered his senior apprentices beneath the Observatory Dome.

Above them, the ceiling slowly became transparent, revealing the daytime sky.

"Today," he began, "we study failure."

Several students exchanged puzzled glances. One raised his hand.

"But Master, shouldn't we study success?"

Seraphel picked up two clay pots from a nearby table.

One was beautifully decorated.

The other was cracked and crudely repaired with silver resin."Which one is more valuable?" "The decorated one."

Several students answered.

Seraphel poured water into both.

The perfect pot leaked from an invisible flaw near its base. The repaired pot held every drop. The room fell silent.

"The world admires perfection."

He said.

"History depends upon those who learn from what breaks."Thalenna quietly wrote the lesson into her journal.Maelor...

Barely heard it.

Beneath the Sand

That evening, Maelor returned.

The desert was cold beneath the moonlight.

The great stone door waited exactly as before.

Silent.

Patient.

He stood before it for a long time.

"I came back."

Nothing happened.

Then...The whisper returned.

"You seek understanding."

"I do."

"Then ask."

Maelor swallowed.

"What are you?"

Silence.

Then..."A mirror."

The answer confused him.

"A mirror of what?"

"Choice."

The crimson light pulsed once.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

The whisper faded.

The door remained closed.

Yet Maelor left with more questions than he had arrived with and strangely,He was satisfied. The Keeper Watches

Far below

Beyond the hidden halls

The First Keeper stood before an immense window carved from crystal.

He could not see Maelor.

But he felt him.

The old Keeper closed his eyes.

"It begins."

A stone librarian approached.

Its voice carried the quiet cadence of turning pages."Shall the Archive intervene?"

The Keeper slowly shook his head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because wisdom cannot be forced."

He looked toward the endless shelves surrounding him.

"If humanity is to survive..."

"They must choose rightly."

"Not simply be prevented from choosing wrongly."Astraeus and Auren

On the highest terrace of Ilys-Kareth, Astraeus and Auren watched the sunset paint the desert in crimson and gold.

"You're troubled."

Auren observed.

"I am."

Astraeus admitted.

"The whisper?"

Astraeus nodded.

"It isn't lying."

Auren looked surprised.

"What?"

"It never promises power."

"It never promises immortality."

"It only offers solutions."

A long silence followed.

"Then why is it dangerous?"

Astraeus' expression grew solemn.

"Because the most dangerous lie"

"is one wrapped inside the truth."

Thalenna's Discovery

Late into the night, Thalenna continued translating fragments recovered from the hidden library.

One damaged page caught her attention.

Most of the text had faded beyond recognition.

Only a few lines remained intact.

When the Seven gather...

One will seek strength.

One will seek knowledge.

One will seek mercy.

One will seek unity.

The remaining lines had been torn away.

Seven paths.

Seven desires.

She copied the passage into her journal, intending to study it later.

She could not know

It described the Seven Stars themselves.

Closing Scene

Deep beneath the buried library...

The crimson light receded.

Not in defeat.

In satisfaction.

The whisper had accomplished its purpose.

Not corruption.

Curiosity.

That was always the first step.

It had planted no commands.

Made no bargains.

It had simply ensured that one man would return.

Again.

And again.

Until the day he finally opened the door himself.

History would one day blame Maelor.

The First Keeper never would.

Because every tragedy begins long before the moment the world notices it.

It begins

With the first crack.

Not in stone.

But in conviction.
