In the lowest-level settlement, where Axel was, more and more awakeners gathered in the streets and doorways, completely unaware of the bloody struggle that had just transpired back on the central platform.
The heavy air felt deceptively still, but then the silence broke. The sound of distant screams echoed down the winding stone streets—faint at first, but gradually growing louder and closer with every passing second.
"What's that?" someone near Axel whispered, craning their neck toward the shadow-drenched alleyways. "Is that... shouting?"
Before anyone could answer, emerging from the gloom, faint highlights of the bugs glinted in the dim light.
__________
The tortoise-like bugs swarmed down upon the choked-up buildings, drawn straight to the dense clusters of human sentience crammed inside the rooms.
With horrific force, the creatures slammed into the outer walls and roofs, tearing through metal and stone to reach the trapped bodies within. Panic erupted instantly. Both awakeners and soldiers were forced to abandon the fortified structures, spilling out into the chaotic streets as casualties spiked rapidly throughout the lower settlement. Screams echoed off the rock overhead as dozens fell to the onslaught.
Inside the gateway building, "The back!" someone shouted over the deafening din. "Get to the barracks!"
They unlatched the heavy security door at the rear of the hall, swinging it wide open. The packed crowd surged forward in a desperate wave, abandoning the main structure and escaping into the safety of the military barracks.
The scaled, tortoise-like bugs gradually surged closer down the unnaturally wide street, their translucent wings a blur as they violently consumed soldiers and awakeners alike without distinction. Horrified screams echoed off the stone as people were dragged down in the rush, but the frantic crowd surging toward the barracks entrance only grew thicker.
Standing right at the inner frame, Axel, the dark-skinned girl with braids, and the short red-haired boy could only keep the entrance open. "We can't close it yet!" the red-haired boy yelled.
Axel gritted out, his knuckles white as he braced his shoulder against the door. "If we close it now, they're dead!"
The dark-skinned girl gritted her teeth, her braids swinging as she threw her body weight into the latch. They all knew the horrific math: closing the door meant safety for the inside, but shutting out the crowd meant instant death for everyone still reaching for the threshold.
Suddenly, footsteps pounded from the interior corridor behind them. The short, light-skinned girl with glasses returned, breathless and pale, her arms loaded with weapons. She had managed to escape into the barracks with the initial wave of crowds, but instead of staying hidden, she had doubled back to the doorway.
"Take these!" she shouted over the deafening din, dropping a heavy mini cargo of firearms onto the floor near their feet.
A mix of heavy, standard-issue mundane rifles and glowing, enchanted guns, brought straight from the barracks armory to give them a fighting chance against the approaching swarm.
The tortoise-like bugs were far more visible now, their scaled armor gleaming under the harsh interior lights and their translucent wings beating in a deafening, frantic rhythm as they swarmed down the passage.
The brave ones—Axel included—knew they had no choice. They could only stand their ground and defend the threshold. The dense crowd surging in from the settlement was simply too thick to force the door shut, and pulling back now would mean letting the horde break inside and slaughter everyone.
Looking at the armful of weapons cluttering the floor, Axel let out a sharp, bitter laugh at his own absurd luck.
"Guess we're holding the line," he gritted out through his teeth, snatching up one of the rune-etched enchanted rifles.
Beside him, around fifty other awakeners and soldiers grabbed weapons from the stack, forming a makeshift firing line across the wide doorway.
"Fire!" someone screamed above the roar of wings.
Axel brought the heavy stock to his shoulder and pulled the trigger. Pulses of enchanted energy and heavy lead ripped out from the line, tearing into the front rank of the incoming swarm. Shell casings clattered against the stone floor as more fleeing awakeners scrambled past the shooters, diving into the barracks interior. Seeing the line hold, several incoming awakeners stopped their retreat, picking up fallen arms from the ground to join the defensive salvo.
Every few moments, the agonizing pressure of unreleased energy surged inside their chests. One by one, shooters dropped to their knees in blinding pain, gasping on the hard ground. But as the searing agony cleared their heads, they forced themselves back up, raised their weapons with trembling hands, and started shooting all over again.
The improvised firing line poured a relentless volley of lead and enchanted rounds into the corridor, dropping scaled tortoise-like bugs by the dozen. Yet, despite the carpet of dead monsters piling up on the stone, the swarm's numbers gradually kept rising. Wave after wave surged over the fallen, and holding back the relentless tide grew more difficult with every passing second.
Suddenly, a massive bug broke through the barrage, its glistening scales cutting through the smoke. It locked onto the short girl with glasses, launching itself straight through the air toward her with spear shape and mouth open wide.
She froze, her eyes widening behind her lenses as the shadow fell over her.
Axel moved purely on instinct. He threw his weight sideways, diving across the doorway to shove her out of the trajectory. He slammed into her body, clearing her from the bug's path just as the creature struck.
Pain exploded through Axel's lower body as the monster's sharp,spear-like bite tore violently into his foot. He hit the cold floor hard, gasping for breath as blood instantly soaked through his trousers, deeply wounding his right leg.
Panic ignited across the threshold as the remaining defenders saw Axel fall, blood pooling rapidly around his mangled legs. Horror washed over their faces, and one by one, they broke formation. Turning their backs on the doorway, they gradually ran deeper into the barracks, abandoning the line—and leaving Axel alone to his fate.
Lying grounded in his own blood, Axel stared after them with gritted teeth. A cold, bitter wave of betrayal burned in his chest. "They just left me", he thought, his jaw clenched so hard his muscles hurt.
Refusing to go down without a fight, he dragged himself up onto his elbows, raised his enchanted rifle with trembling arms, and began firing back into the corridor. Sparks flew as his shots struck the oncoming swarm; they were still a distance from him, and his solitary fire was completely for naught. The tide did not slow.
The tortoise-like bugs surged forward to crush him. As they descended upon him, their glistening scales and translucent wings looming just a few meters from his face, Axel braced for the end.
Suddenly,
The temperature dropped so drastically and instantly that Axel's ragged breath turned into a thick cloud of frost mid-air. A sharp, cracking sound echoed through the entrance as a sudden blast of absolute zero swept past him. Instantly, a huge swath of the descending bugs froze stiff in mid-flight, their armored bodies locking up in solid ice before crashing heavily onto the stone floor like shattered glass.
