Chapter 17 - Chapter 18: The Broken Lullaby

The Marco Polo Airport was a cathedral of glass and steel, echoing with the footsteps of people who had places to go and homes to return to. Eleni stood by the large terminal window, watching the rain streak across the glass like tears. In her hand, she held Mia's small, tattered teddy bear—the only thing they had managed to save from the fire in Athens.

Ben stood a few feet away, leaning heavily against a marble pillar. He looked exhausted, the adrenaline that had fueled him since the Acropolis finally ebbing away, leaving behind a man who looked older than his years.

"They're here," Ben whispered, his voice cracked.

Eleni turned. Across the terminal, escorted by two of Donatella's grim-faced men, were Leo and Mia.

The moment Mia saw her mother, she didn't run. She stopped. Her small face was pale, her eyes wide and haunted. The 6-year-old girl who used to laugh at the smell of gardenias was gone. In her place was a child who had learned that silence was the only way to stay alive.

"Mama?" Mia's voice was a fragile thread.

Eleni dropped to her knees, opening her arms. Mia flew into them, but she didn't cry. She just clung to Eleni's neck with a strength that broke Eleni's heart. She felt like she was holding a bird with broken wings.

"I'm here, mou. I'm here," Eleni sobbed into the girl's hair, which still smelled faintly of Sofia's woodsmoke and the sea.

Leo approached them, his eyes red-rimmed. He looked at Ben, then at Eleni. "We lost everything, didn't we? The house, the photos of Mom... everything is gone."

"We have each other, Leo," Eleni said, though the words felt hollow in her mouth. She looked up at Ben, who was watching the reunion with a look of profound, silent guilt.

Ben walked over and knelt beside them. He reached out to touch Mia's hand, but he hesitated, his fingers hovering as if he feared his touch would contaminate her.

"The plane is waiting," Ben said softly. "Donatella has kept her word. You, Mia, and Leo... you're going to a place where the sun stays warm all year. A place where nobody knows the name Benson."

Eleni's heart skipped a beat. She caught the subtle shift in his sentence. "What do you mean 'You'? Ben, where is your ticket?"

Ben looked down at the cold terminal floor. He pulled the silver drive from his pocket—the cause of all their misery—and handed it to Eleni.

"I'm not coming, Eleni."

The world seemed to stop. The announcements over the intercom became a dull hum. "What? No. We had a deal. We're a team."

"Silas is at the secondary gate," Ben said, his eyes finally meeting hers. They were filled with a crushing, hopeless kind of love. "He knows about the flight. Donatella didn't betray us, but Silas's reach is longer than she realized. If I get on that plane, his men will bring it down. But if I stay... if I go to him and give him the original encryption key... he'll let the plane take off."

"No!" Eleni stood up, clutching his linen shirt. "You're giving yourself up? He'll kill you, Ben. You know he will."

"He might," Ben said, a small, sad smile touching his lips. "But you'll be in the air. You'll be safe. Mia will grow up in a house with a garden, and she'll forget the sound of gunfire. That's the only future that matters now."

Mia looked up, sensing the goodbye. She reached out and grabbed Ben's hand—the hand that had held a gun to protect her. "Sebastian? Are you coming to play the game with us?"

Ben choked back a sob, his composure finally breaking. He knelt down and kissed Mia's forehead. "The game is over, little bird. You won. Now you have to go with Mama and be very, very brave."

Leo looked at Ben with a newfound respect that was laced with grief. "You're doing this for us."

"I'm doing this for her," Ben said, looking at Eleni. "She was just a girl who sold roses, Leo. I turned her into a ghost. This is the only way I can give her back her soul."

Donatella's men stepped forward. "Time to go. The engines are turning."

Eleni felt like she was being torn in two. One half of her wanted to scream and stay, to fight by his side until the end. The other half felt the weight of Mia's small hand in hers.

"Ben..." Eleni whispered, her tears falling onto the silver drive.

"Don't look back, Eleni," Ben said, stepping away from her, back into the shadows of the terminal. "Go. Live. And for God's sake, learn how to make a decent cup of coffee."

As the guards led them toward the tunnel, Eleni turned one last time. Ben was standing alone in the vast, empty terminal, a solitary figure draped in shadow. He didn't wave. He just watched them go, his heart breaking in silence.

As the plane lifted off into the gray Venetian sky, Mia fell asleep in Eleni's lap, clutching her teddy bear. Eleni looked out the window at the city disappearing below. She had her family. She had her life. But as she looked at the empty seat beside her, she realized she had left her heart on the tarmac with the Shadow King.
