CHAPTER TWELVE
THE WARNING.
The invitation start between them like a ticking clock, Lena hadn't touched it again. But she didn't need to. The word were already etched into her mind. You are invited. Night fell slowly, wrapping the city in shadows that felt heavier than usual. Adrian Stood near the window, his gaze fixed outside , but his thoughts were elsewhere. Calculating, planning and anticipating. Lena watched from across the room, "you're thinking too far ahead again." She said softly. Adrian didn't turn. "I'm not thinking far enough," she walked towards him. "You don't have to do this alone." "I know," "but you're still acting like you're."
He turned this time around. And the look in his eyes wasn't cold. It was conflicted. "I don't want you in danger." he said . Lena stepped closer, "I already am." A pause then she added, "but I'm not afraid of facing it with you." Those words stayed with him heavy and real. Suddenly a sharp knock echoed through the room, both of them froze. Adrian's instinct took over immediately, " stay behind me." He moved towards the door slowly every step silent, controlled. He open it no one was there. Just a small box, placed carefully at the doorstep. Adrian stare at it, then picked it up. Lena stepped closer. "That's not normal." "No." Adrian said quietly, "it's not." He placed the box on the table and opened it slowly. Inside was a phone. Both of them went still. The screen lit up instantly. A video began playing. Victor , calm , composed and watching. "Adrian."his voice echoed and "Lena." Lena felt a chill ran through her. "I see you received my invitation," Victor continued. "I do hope you're considering it carefully." Adrian's jaw tightened. Victor's expression shifted slightly less amused. More serious. "Because this .. " he paused briefly." Your warning." The room felt colder. "You think you understand the situation," Victor continued. "But you don't." The screen flickered and suddenly images appeared. Photos of Lena , at work, on the street and outside her apartment. Her breath caught.
"He's been watching me for longer than we thought." She whispered. Adrian's fists clenched, Victor's voice returned, "you're not just part of this now , Lena ." A pause then "You're central to it ." The words hit hard like a blow. "If you walk away now," Victor continued. "You might still have a chance at a normal life." Lena shook her head slowly. "No." Adrian looked at her. Victor leaned closer to the camera. "But if you accept my invitation." A faint smile , cold and dangerous. "Then there's no going back." The screen went black. Silence heavy and unavoidable. Lena's voice trembled slightly. "He's giving us a choice." Adrian shook his head "No." a pause then, "he's testing us ." Lena looked at him with fear, "and what do we do." she said. Adrian stepped closer, his voice steady, and certain. "We don't let him control the outcome." A pause then Lena nodded. "We go." Let's get to the end of this. And just like that, the warning became a decision.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN.
DANGEROUS PARTY
The building stood like a secret, elegant, expensive and deceptively calm. Lena adjusted her dress slightly , as they approach the entrance. "You think this is a good idea? She asked quietly. Adrian glanced at her. "No." "But it's the only way out for now."
The guard at the door said nothing, they simply stepped aside, as if they have been expecting them. Inside everything was perfect, too perfect. Music flowed softly through the air. People laughed, champagne glasses clinked, it looked like a celebration, but Lena felt it immediately, that something was off. "They're watching." She whispered. Adrian nodded slightly. "Everyone here is part of it." Lena's heartbeat quickened. "Then we're surrounded." "Yes." They moved carefully through the crowd. Every smile felt fake, every glance felt calculated. A woman passed by brushing lightly against Lena, "be careful," she whispered under her breath. Lena froze, but when she turned the woman was gone.
"Did you hear that." Lena asked, Adrian expression tightened. "Yes." That changed things. Not everyone here was on Victor's side. But that didn't make it safer , it made it unpredictable. "Enjoying the evening?" A voice came from behind them. Both of them turned, Victor. Standing there like he belonged, because he did. Lena felt her breath catch. "You came ." He said calmly. Adrian's voice dropped, "we are not here to play games." Victor smiled faintly. "But that's exactly why you are here." His gaze shifted to Lena. "And you.." A pause long , intentional. "You're even more interesting, You're making everything fun." Adrian stepped slightly in front of her . Victor chuckled softly. "Still protective."
Lena's voice steadied. "What do you want." Victor tilted his head slightly. "Clarity." "About what." She asked. "About how far you're willing to go for each other." The music continued, the party carried on, but around them, everything had stopped. "Then stop hiding," Adrian said . "Say what you really want." Victor stepped closer. "I want to see what happens..when you're pushed to your limits." Lena's heart pounded. "This isn't a game," she said. Victor's smile faded. "No." A pause, "it's a revelation." He turned slightly gesturing toward a hallway. "Come with me." Adrian didn't move . "Why?" Victor's voice dropped. "Because what you're looking for.." a pause, "is behind that door.
