An Awakener's power is defined by three fundamental pillars that determine their effectiveness in combat, exploration, and survival.
The first is Mana Capacity—the reservoir of energy stored within the core. A larger capacity allows for sustained combat, prolonged spellcasting, and greater endurance in hostile environments. Without sufficient capacity, even the most skilled Awakener will falter when stamina depletes.
The second pillar is Control and Refinement—the precision with which mana is shaped and channeled. Raw power means nothing without the ability to direct it effectively. A C-Rank with exceptional control can outmaneuver a B-Rank who relies solely on brute force. Refinement separates the competent from the exceptional.
The third is Affinity Compatibility—how well an Awakener's core resonates with their chosen energy. Some individuals possess natural alignment with their affinity, achieving mastery with minimal effort. Others must struggle against incompatibility, forcing power through resistance at great personal cost.
These three factors combine to determine rank—F through SSS—though rank alone doesn't guarantee victory. Strategy, experience, and psychological fortitude often tip the scales where raw power fails.
"Which brings us to the energy classification system," Professor Vale's voice continues, snapping Cael's focus back to the front of the classroom. She stands beside a projected holographic display that shifts and rotates, showing various energy patterns in luminous detail. "Understanding these distinctions is critical. Ignorance kills Awakeners faster than any dungeon beast."
Cael straightens in his seat, suddenly grateful he'd been half-paying attention. Odin whispers quietly in his mind, "Recording lecture for Archive integration."
The hologram shifts, displaying a swirling pattern of silver-white energy that pulses with rhythmic intensity.
"Mana is the foundational supernatural energy," Vale explains, tapping the display. The pattern expands, filling the projection space. "It powers all magic, spells, and mystical phenomena. Without mana, magic cannot function—it is both source and medium of magical expression. Every Awakener draws from this base energy, regardless of their chosen affinity."
She gestures, and the display fragments into six distinct energy types, each rotating in a separate sphere.
"Force Energy manipulates physical laws—motion, gravity, inertia, impact, pressure, momentum. Wielders alter environmental forces, enhance physical strikes, redirect kinetic energy. Think of it as weaponized physics." A sphere showing vectors of motion and impact waves demonstrates the concept. "Force users excel in close combat and battlefield control."
The next sphere glows with ethereal, ghostly light.
"Mystic Energy governs spiritual presence, soul strength, and consciousness. It enables spirit-based techniques, mental resistance, and soul resonance. Unlike mana, which is universal, mystic energy is deeply personal—drawn from internal consciousness rather than external sources." The projection shows layered auras wrapping around a humanoid silhouette. "Mystic users can resist mental influence and project techniques that bypass physical defenses entirely."
Cael leans forward despite himself. This is exactly the kind of information the Warlock's Archive mentioned but never fully explained.
Professor Vale moves to the third sphere, which displays intricate geometric patterns and glowing runes.
"Arcane Energy represents structured magic—mana refined through knowledge, forms, and magical laws. Arcane users manipulate power through methodical theory, runes, incantations, and spellcraft. This is traditional magic in its purest sense." She taps the projection, causing the runes to rearrange themselves into new configurations. "Study, ritual, and comprehension determine strength. Arcane practitioners are scholars as much as warriors."
The fourth sphere blazes with blinding white-gold light, so intense several students shield their eyes.
"Aether is high-density, highly purified mana—the most potent version possible. Rare, intense, and dangerous to control without immense core strength and discipline." Vale's expression grows stern. "Aether allows overwhelming power output but carries tremendous physical risk. Burn your channels with uncontrolled Aether flow, and you'll never recover. Most Awakeners never encounter it. Those who do either ascend or destroy themselves."
Cael feels the ring on his finger pulse faintly, as if responding to the mention of Aether. He resists the urge to glance down at it.
The fifth sphere manifests as a visible pressure—waves of colored energy radiating outward from a central point.
"Aura is will-infused mana made manifest through presence, spirit pressure, and combat intent. While it draws on mana, aura represents how power is expressed through personality and resolve." The projection shows a warrior figure surrounded by crackling energy that shifts in color and intensity based on emotional state. "Aura enhances physical attributes, intimidates opponents, and projects intent. It's how power is felt rather than just seen."
Vale pauses, letting that sink in. Her own aura flares briefly—a deep violet pressure that makes the air itself vibrate with sound frequencies. Cael's skin prickles, and several students shift uncomfortably in their seats.
Just as quickly, she retracts it.
"Control," she states flatly. "Without it, you're a liability."
The final sphere doesn't appear immediately. Instead, the hologram flickers, struggling to render the energy pattern. When it finally stabilizes, it shows a black void shot through with silver lightning—an absence of energy rather than a presence.
"And then there's Void Energy," Vale says, her tone shifting to something darker. "Rare, forbidden in most kingdoms, and catastrophically dangerous. Void represents anti-mana—the negation and consumption of energy itself. Void users don't just counter magic; they erase it, along with anything else caught in their techniques."
Cael's blood runs cold. The masked cultist. That black lightning that killed Max in an instant—was that Void Energy?
"Void affinity is almost exclusively seen among cultists and demons as well as humans that are taken over by demons " Vale continues. "The Heroic Corps has standing orders to report any suspected Void user immediately. It corrupts both body and mind over time, twisting the wielder into something inhuman also known as demonic human."
Professor Vale dismisses the hologram with a wave. "These are the major energy types you'll encounter throughout your career. Most Awakeners wield a single affinity in addition to basic mana reinforcement. Those capable of wielding multiple affinities are classified as Deviants—exceptionally rare and sought out for by either the Corps or the Grand Magisterium."
I watch as Professor Vale concludes her lecture, her violet eyes scanning the room with the kind of intensity that makes you want to sink into your seat.
"Next class, we'll expand on affinity resonance patterns and how they manifest differently based on individual core structures," she says, dismissing the holographic display with a flick of her wrist. "And before I forget—there will be a theory test on energy systems and dungeon classification at the end of the week, alongside your rank evaluations."
Several students groan quietly. I don't join them. After everything I've been through, a written test seems almost laughable.
"For those looking to increase your rank before the formal evaluation," Vale continues, "submit a challenge ticket to the Crucible office. Both parties must accept the duel for it to be officially recognized." Her gaze sweeps across the room and briefly locks with mine.
"Class dismissed."
