Chapter 32 - Chapter 32:The Arlet

The lecture hall buzzed with the quiet hum of students taking notes, but Cael's attention was split between the professor's words and the nagging thought of his impending evaluation. The topic—magical creatures and their behavioral patterns—was fascinating, but his mind kept circling back to one thing: defense.

I need a solid defensive ability before tomorrow, he thought, his fingers drumming against the desk. Something that can actually hold up against whatever they throw at me.

He leaned back slightly, casting a glance toward his smartwatch. "Hey, Odin, I really need to find a decent defensive skill. Any cadets around here with abilities that I could—"

"Attention to detail is crucial," Odin interjected, his calm voice resonating in Cael's mind. "However, you might want to reconsider your approach."

Cael frowned, distracted from the lecture. "What do you mean? I should look around for a cadet with a defensive ability. Maybe I could find someone during practice later."

"Or," Odin suggested, his tone casual, "you could consider exploring the black market."

"Black market?" Cael echoed, raising an eyebrow.

"Allow me to access the archive," Odin responded, a flicker of enthusiasm in his tone. The familiar interface sprang to life in Cael's mind, displaying fragments of information. "The Arlet is an underground organization known for acquiring rare magical artifacts, forbidden knowledge, and various skill books."

Cael listened intently, intrigued by the revelations. "Not much detail on the leader, though…? Typical, right?"

"Indeed," Odin replied, "but it mentions the Warlock's relationship with The Arlet and even suggests he knew the leader personally. There are accounts of how to infiltrate the black market and details about their operations, including auctions for various skill books."

Cael's mind raced as he absorbed the new possibilities. "So there's a chance I might find a defensive ability there? One that could actually work for me?"

"Affirmative," came Odin's calm response. "Access to such resources could enhance your capabilities, particularly in preparation for your evaluation."

"Right," Cael said, chewing his lip thoughtfully. "But why didn't you tell me about this before?"

"You never asked," Odin replied, a hint of playful sarcasm cloaked beneath his polite demeanor.

Cael clicked his teeth in mild frustration, shaking his head with a smirk. "Of course. That makes perfect sense." With a newfound determination, he leaned forward, his energy shifting. "Alright, it's decided. I'll check out this black market after classes are done for the day."

As the lecture wound to a close, Cael's mind was still buzzing with thoughts of The Arlet and the potential skills he could acquire. But one thing lingered: he needed to formally request permission to leave the academy for the day. With the black market weighing heavily on his thoughts, he mentally kicked himself for not considering the paperwork earlier.

His heart raced slightly as he glanced at the clock on the wall. There was still time if he acted fast. As soon as the professor signaled the end of class, he pushed himself up from his seat, the chair scraping against the floor with an almost comical screech.

Making his way to the front of the classroom, he approached Professor Nerys, who was organizing her notes with practiced precision. She looked up as he neared, an eyebrow raised in curiosity.

"Cael, is there something you need?" she asked, her tone both inviting and assessing.

"Uh, yes, Professor," he replied, summoning all the confidence he could muster. "I need to request permission to leave the academy for the day."

Her gaze narrowed slightly, skepticism evident. "And may I ask why?"

Cael hesitated, a myriad of excuses rushing through his mind. Then he settled on a simple, believable one. "I have some... personal matters to attend to. It's nothing urgent, but I need to sort a few things out."

Professor Nerys studied him for a moment, her expression unreadable. The room was silent, the weight of her scrutiny making him feel like he was under a spotlight.

"Personal matters, you say?" she finally stated, her tone skeptical. "It's unusual for a student to request time away without a specific reason."

He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, scrambling for a way to convince her. "I understand, but it's something that's important to me. I promise it'll be worth my while."

With a sigh, she relented, though her gaze remained cautious. "Very well, Cael. I will grant you permission to leave, but this better not become a habit."

"Of course, Professor! I appreciate it," he said quickly, relief flooding over him.

The professor nodded, her expression softening slightly. "Just ensure you submit the proper application next time. I'll note your absence today."

"Yes, thank you!" Cael replied, his heart lifting as he made his way to the door. As he stepped out of the classroom, he felt a surge of exhilaration.

Now, his path was clear; he would be heading to The Arlet after classes. The prospect of delving into the mysterious underbelly of the academy's hidden secrets excited him, bringing with it the thrill of the unknown.

With his next steps determined, he allowed himself a small smile, thoughts racing with possibilities. Just a quick detour before the evaluation—what could possibly go wrong?

As the final bell rang, signaling the end of classes for the day, Cael Ardentis made a beeline for his dormitory. The excitement coursing through him mingled with nervous anticipation. This is it; time to explore the unknown.

He entered his room and quickly scanned the space for anything he might need. Cael shrugged, realizing his inventory was rather sparse—just a few books, some basic supplies, and the magical artifacts he had collected along the way. He stuffed an empty pouch into his pocket, deciding that he could barely make a dent in the underworld's vast offerings with what he had.

After a moment's hesitation, Cael grabbed his magic-enhanced notebook—a gift from his time with the Heroic Corps—and sensed its potential for notes or sketches if the situation required it as well as his regular black clothing. With a final glance around the room, he headed out.

As he approached the academy gates, Cael's pulse quickened. Two guards stood sentinel, their expressions stern. He presented the form Professor Nerys had given him, noting the traces of skepticism in their gazes as they examined the paper. The taller guard raised an eyebrow, glancing back at Cael.

"Leaving for the day?" said the guard.

"Yup. Nothing urgent, just personal matters to attend to," Cael replied, trying to sound nonchalant.

The guard rolled the form up and nodded, allowing Cael to proceed. "Just don't make this a habit."

With a relieved smile, Cael continued his long walk to the teleport station. The academy's polished stone paths seemed endless, but the anticipation bolstered his steps.

Once he reached the station, the familiar hum of active portals filled his ears. He leaned against the cool, smooth surface of the terminal, connecting with Odin. Hey, can you remind me where The Arlet is located?

"Allow me to access the archive," Odin responded. The interface flickered to life in Cael's mind, displaying a map of Valefort City, with a marked pathway leading to the black market. "The Arlet is accessed via a portal located near the abandoned warehouse district. You will need to pay to use this teleportation route."

Cael nodded, preparing himself for the details he needed to remember. He took a deep breath, steeling his nerves as he moved to the portal designated for The Arlet.

Upon arriving at the portal entrance, a guard blocked the way. "Payment required for transit," he stated, crossing his arms.

Cael felt his pulse quicken as he reached into his pouch. Just as he was about to pull out the funds, a thought struck him—he hesitated and instead fumbled for the Top Ten Ranker insignia badge he had received after his recent fight in the Octalis Arena.

With a moment of uncertainty, he pulled it out and displayed it to the guard. The guard's eyes widened in surprise, but he quickly masked his reaction with a professional facade.

"Impressive. You've got free access through here," the guard said, stepping aside to let Cael through.

Cael was taken aback, his mouth slightly agape. I didn't know this badge granted me special privileges!

"Proceed through the portal," the guard instructed, gesturing for him to enter.

With newfound confidence, Cael stepped into the portal, anticipation bubbling within him as he prepared to delve into the enigmatic world of The Arlet.
