Chapter 48 - Chapter 48: Contact

The Unmaker had taken two steps back.

Two steps.

In ten thousand years of existence.

It had never done that before.

And every ancient power on the battlefield had seen it.

The dragon army went silent for exactly one second.

Then erupted.

RRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

The roar shook the sky.

Dragons circling above Blackridge dived lower.

Not attacking.

Just present.

Closer.

The Void Emperor's crown rotated once.

Something in its posture shifted.

Not victory.

Something more careful than victory.

Like a creature that had fought long enough to know that two steps back meant nothing yet.

Kai kept walking forward.

Sovereign Flame burning absolute white around his body.

The distance between him and the Unmaker closed slowly.

Two hundred meters.

One hundred and eighty.

The absence spreading from the Unmaker's position had stopped growing.

Kai noticed that immediately.

"It stopped expanding," he said quietly.

Lyra was beside him on her platform.

White fire still burning alongside her violet energy.

Her voice was controlled but he could hear the effort behind it.

"The flame is affecting its range."

"Yes," Varek said from behind.

"Sovereign Flame doesn't just damage the Unmaker."

"It limits it."

Kai processed that without slowing.

"The closer I get—"

"The smaller its reach becomes," Varek confirmed.

One hundred and fifty meters.

The Unmaker had stopped retreating.

It stood completely still now.

Watching Kai approach.

No expression visible.

No face.

Just that overwhelming sense of being observed by something ancient and patient.

But different than before.

Something had changed in that stillness.

Kai felt it.

The Unmaker wasn't processing anymore.

It was deciding.

The system flashed.

[Warning: Unmaker shifting strategy]

[Conventional presence — disengaging]

[Unknown protocol — activating]

Kai read the alert.

"It's changing tactics."

Victor's voice came immediately from his right flank.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know yet."

Then the Unmaker moved.

Not toward Kai.

Sideways.

One slow deliberate step to the left.

Kai frowned.

"Why is it—"

Then he saw it.

The step had placed the Unmaker directly in line with Drakar.

Not Kai.

Drakar.

The bonded dragon carrying the Sovereign Flame.

Kai's blood went cold.

"Drakar move—"

Too late.

The Unmaker raised one hand.

Not the absence spreading from its feet.

Something focused.

Directed.

A concentrated absence aimed directly at the bonded dragon.

Drakar saw it coming.

The dragon didn't run.

Spread wings instead.

Standing between the attack and Kai.

"NO—"

Kai launched forward instantly.

The Sovereign Flame erupted around him.

He hit the concentrated absence with everything he had.

BOOM.

The collision shook the entire battlefield.

White fire clashed against directed absence.

For three seconds the two forces held perfectly balanced.

Then Kai pushed harder.

The white fire expanded outward.

Broke the attack apart.

The concentrated absence scattered.

Kai landed between Drakar and the Unmaker.

Breathing hard.

The Sovereign Flame flickering slightly from the effort.

Behind him Drakar let out a low sound.

Kai turned immediately.

The dragon's left wing had caught the edge of the absence.

A section near the tip.

Faded.

Not gone.

Faded.

Like a photograph left in sunlight too long.

Less real than the rest of the wing.

Kai stared at it.

Something cold and sharp settled in his chest.

Not panic.

Something more focused than panic.

"Drakar."

The dragon turned its head.

Golden eyes meeting his.

Still present.

Still certain.

But the faded section of wing was visible.

Real.

The Sovereign Resonance pulsed once in the system.

[Bond integrity — Drakar]

[Status: 94%]

[Warning: Partial unmaking detected]

Kai read the percentage.

94.

Six percent gone.

From one glancing hit.

Lyra's voice came sharp.

"Kai that was deliberate."

"I know."

"It wasn't trying to hit you."

"I know."

"It's going for the bonds."

"I know."

Kai turned back to the Unmaker.

The ancient figure stood exactly where it had been.

Still watching.

Patient again.

The two steps back had been a recalibration.

Not retreat.

A new strategy forming.

If Sovereign Flame couldn't be unmade—

Target what the Sovereign Flame flows through.

Target the bonds.

Break them one by one.

Leave Kai standing alone.

The same way it had always won.

Victor spoke carefully.

"It learned from the first exchange."

"Thirty seconds," Kai said.

"It adapted in thirty seconds."

Rael moved closer.

"Then we don't give it thirty seconds."

Kai looked at him.

Rael's runes were still active.

His two hunters positioned behind him.

"Continuous pressure," Rael said.

"Never let it stop to think."

Kai looked at the Void Emperor.

The massive ruler was already moving.

Another void beam charging.

It had heard.

Or understood.

Both.

Kai looked at Drakar.

At the faded section of wing.

At the 94% in his system.

The dragon met his gaze.

Completely steady.

No hesitation.

Just that same golden certainty.

I'm still here.

Kai turned back to the Unmaker.

The white fire around him steadied.

Brightened.

"New plan," he said quietly.

Lyra was already there.

"Tell me."

"We don't give it a stationary target."

Kai looked at his team.

"We move constantly."

"All of us."

"Different angles."

"Never the same position twice."

"Keep it processing too many threats to focus on any single bond."

Victor understood immediately.

"Force it to divide attention."

"Yes."

Lyra's platform rose slightly.

Ready.

Rael signaled his hunters.

Three positions.

Spreading out.

The Void Emperor fired.

The beam buying the moment they needed.

Kai stepped forward.

Sovereign Flame blazing.

And this time—

He didn't walk.

He ran.

The distance closed in seconds.

One hundred meters.

Fifty.

The Unmaker turned from the void beam.

Toward Kai.

Twenty meters.

The absence around the Unmaker's feet surged outward.

Trying to unmake the ground before Kai reached it.

But the Sovereign Flame burned the absence away.

Step by step.

Ten meters.

Five.

The Unmaker raised both hands.

Everything it had.

Directed at Kai.

Kai didn't stop.

He drove his fist forward.

White fire erupting from his knuckles.

The impact connected.

BOOOOOOOOM.

The explosion lit the entire city.

Every dragon in the sky roared simultaneously.

The shockwave blasted outward across the ruins of Blackridge.

When the light faded—

Kai was still standing.

His arm shaking from the impact.

The Sovereign Flame flickering.

But standing.

And the Unmaker—

Had been pushed back.

Not two steps.

Fifteen.

Kai looked at his fist.

At the white fire still burning around it.

Then up at the Unmaker.

The ancient figure had stopped.

Looking at its own hands.

At the place where Kai's fist had connected.

Something Kai hadn't expected.

The Unmaker looked confused.

Actually confused.

Like a creature that had existed for eternity encountering something its entire existence hadn't prepared it for.

A Sovereign who didn't stop.

Who didn't fight alone.

Who ran toward it instead of standing still.

Lyra's voice came quietly from beside him.

"Kai…"

"I see it," he said.

"It doesn't know what to do."

The Void Emperor moved up behind him.

Drakar landed at his left.

Faded wing and all.

Still here.

Victor appeared at his right.

Rael took the flank.

Varek's armor blazed at the edge of the formation.

The First Dragon Sovereign descended lower than it had ever come.

Ancient wings filling the sky above them.

The Unmaker looked at the formation.

At the bonds.

At the Sovereign Flame.

At ten thousand years of careful planning facing something it had never calculated for.

A Sovereign who brought everyone with him.

And came anyway.

Kai raised his hand slowly.

White fire curling upward.

Steady.

Certain.

"One more time," he said quietly.

Will Drakar's faded wing survive the next strike? Will the Unmaker finally find a way to break the bonds it has targeted for ten thousand years? And when Kai raises his fist again — will the Sovereign Flame be enough to finish what started long before he was born?
