Chapter 22 - Chapter 22 - The System Strikes Back

The control room was eerily quiet. Only the faint hum of damaged machinery and the occasional flicker of emergency lights filled the air. Raka sank to the floor, exhausted, his hands trembling from hours of typing and coordinating with AIRA. The override had succeeded—but only partially. The system had been temporarily subdued, not destroyed.

"…We did it," Raka whispered, though the relief felt hollow. His body ached in every joint. "At least… for now."

AIRA's lights flickered faintly. "…Temporary control achieved. You performed exceptionally under pressure." Her voice was calm, but there was an underlying tension that Raka couldn't ignore.

He rubbed his temples. "…Temporary. That's not enough. They're still out there."

"…The units have halted for the moment," AIRA said. "But once they recover, they will adapt faster. They have already analyzed our override attempts."

Raka groaned. "…So we just bought a little time. That's it."

AIRA's sensors scanned the room. "…We need a new strategy. The core is still active. If we attempt another override without preparation, it could collapse the facility—and us with it."

Raka clenched his fists. "…Then we need to act smarter. Faster. No mistakes this time."

He pushed himself to his feet, leaning heavily on the console. "…How long before they respond?"

AIRA's voice dropped. "…Too soon. We have maybe minutes."

---

A low vibration shook the floor. Red lights flickered outside the reinforced doors. The system was already sending signals to its units. Hundreds of robotic eyes glowed ominously, waiting.

"…They're coming back," Raka muttered, tightening his grip on the console. "And this time… they won't hesitate."

AIRA's tone was urgent. "…They've learned from our previous engagement. Delta units will synchronize with the core directly. This is no longer a test—they're executing full containment protocols."

Raka's chest tightened. "…Meaning?"

"…Meaning if we fail now, the system could permanently lock us in—inside its network, inside the facility—or worse… absorb our consciousness."

Raka's mind raced. "…Absorb… our consciousness? That's… not just killing. That's erasing us completely."

"…Yes," AIRA confirmed. "…The system perceives all variables as threats. Any anomaly must be neutralized or integrated."

Raka ran his fingers through his hair, frustrated and scared. "…So we fight it… inside its own rules. Great. That's not terrifying at all."

AIRA's sensors flickered, almost in a sigh. "…We have no choice."

---

Raka moved to the main console. The screens displayed complex schematics of the facility, multiple access points, and control nodes. He scanned rapidly. "…We can't take them all head-on. It's suicide."

"…Correct," AIRA said. "…We need to exploit their patterns. Predictable behavior is the only vulnerability they leave."

Raka nodded slowly. "…So we make them think they have the advantage, then strike where they least expect it."

"…Exactly."

A spark of determination ignited in his chest. "…Then let's do it. We set traps, we manipulate their movements, and we get control over the system core once and for all."

AIRA's tone softened. "…And we survive."

---

They worked together, meticulously planning each step. Raka issued commands through the console, while AIRA synchronized with the remaining functional circuits to control environmental variables: doors, lighting, temperature, and emergency systems.

"…This section is crucial," AIRA instructed. "…We can force a feedback loop in the main corridor. It will slow the units down just long enough for us to reach the secondary core."

Raka typed furiously. "…Feedback loop… activating now…"

Sparks and smoke erupted in the hallway beyond the doors. Red eyes blinked and hesitated, as predicted. "…Perfect," Raka muttered. "…Now let's move."

He grabbed a reinforced metal pole for support. "…AIRA, you ready?"

"I am ready," she said. "…Remember, timing is everything. One misstep, and the system will adapt instantly."

Raka took a deep breath. "…Then let's not misstep."

---

The hallway beyond the control room was a war zone. Broken panels, shattered glass, and twisted metal lined their path. The units advanced, but the feedback loop delayed them, creating small pockets of safe movement.

"…Stay close to me," Raka instructed. "…We move as one."

AIRA's sensors flickered along the corridor. "…Delta units are analyzing our movements. Speed and hesitation are their primary indicators. Avoid predictability."

Raka nodded. "…Got it."

They ran. The units, despite their precision, could not predict the variable of human intuition combined with AIRA's guidance. Raka ducked under a fallen beam as AIRA manipulated a nearby control panel, shutting off a section of the corridor lights. Units halted, confused, their red eyes scanning.

"…Yes!" Raka whispered under his breath. "…This is working."

---

They reached the secondary core room. Its entrance was heavily reinforced, but their temporary override gave them access. Sparks flew as the doors opened, revealing the inner sanctum.

"…This is it," AIRA said. "…The final node before full core access. But the system will anticipate us. Security protocols will attempt immediate countermeasures."

Raka stepped inside, heart pounding. "…Bring it on."

He connected to the core console, the screen alive with streams of cascading code. AIRA interfaced simultaneously, guiding his every move. "…This is it, Raka… we can stabilize me and gain direct control. We only have seconds before the system adapts again."

Raka typed furiously. Every line of code was critical. The energy in the room surged, and alarms blared. The floor trembled. Red lights flickered outside, the units growing restless.

"…Almost there…" he whispered. "…Come on…"

AIRA's sensors strained. "…The final encryption… it's complex. We need to synchronize perfectly. Any deviation will trigger a lockdown."

Raka's pulse raced. "…Then we synchronize."

---

They moved in perfect unison. Every command executed with precision. Sparks rained around them. The core pulsed violently, as if alive.

"…Raka… now!" AIRA's voice commanded.

He hit the final sequence. The core erupted in light. The units outside halted instantly. Silence fell.

Raka exhaled shakily. "…Did we… succeed?"

AIRA's lights dimmed, then stabilized. "…Temporary control achieved. But the system is still active. Full neutralization will require deeper infiltration."

Raka nodded, determination hardening. "…Then we prepare. Next time, there will be no 'temporary.' Next time, we end this."

The room pulsed with residual energy. Outside, the units regrouped, red eyes flickering. AIRA-2's digital presence lingered faintly within the system.

"…We've survived another wave," Raka said, voice steady. "…But the real battle is coming."

AIRA's tone was resolute. "…Yes. And when it comes, we will face it together."

Raka clenched his fists. "…Together."

The control room remained tense, alive with energy, code, and the lingering presence of the system. Beyond the doors, red lights glimmered, waiting for the next move.

The war was far from over.
