The door closed behind them.
And just like that—
Two worlds separated again.
Inside—
Warmth.
Light.
Noah.
Outside—
Uncertainty.
Danger.
The past.
Emily leaned against the door for a moment.
Eyes closed.
Breathing slow.
Controlled.
Daniel stood a step away.
Watching her.
Not rushing her.
"Hey," he said softly.
Emily opened her eyes.
"I'm okay."
Daniel gave a small nod.
"Didn't say you weren't."
A pause.
"But you don't have to carry all of it alone," he added.
Emily looked at him.
Something in her expression softened again.
"I know," she said quietly.
Noah tugged lightly at her sleeve.
"Mom?"
She immediately turned.
"Yes?"
"Who was that?" he asked.
Emily hesitated.
Just for a second.
Then she knelt down in front of him.
"Someone from a long time ago," she said gently.
Noah frowned.
"Is he bad?"
The question was simple.
But the answer—
Wasn't.
Emily glanced briefly at Daniel.
Then back at Noah.
"He made some mistakes," she said carefully.
"But that doesn't always make someone bad."
Noah thought about that.
Then nodded slowly.
"Okay."
He didn't ask more.
Didn't push.
Because somehow—
That answer was enough for now.
Later—
Noah had fallen asleep again.
Curled up on the couch.
His drawing still clutched in his hand.
Emily gently took it and set it aside.
Brushing his hair back softly.
Daniel watched from a distance.
Quiet.
Then—
They moved into the kitchen.
The mood changed instantly.
No more pretending.
No more soft answers.
Just truth.
"What's the plan?" Daniel asked.
Emily leaned against the counter.
Arms crossed again.
"I don't know yet."
Daniel nodded.
"Okay. Then we figure one out."
Emily let out a slow breath.
"They know about me," she said.
"About where I am… maybe even about him."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Then we don't wait," he said.
Emily looked at him.
"What are you thinking?"
Daniel paused.
Then said—
"We stay ahead of them."
Emily almost smiled.
"You said that earlier."
Daniel shrugged slightly.
"Still true."
A small silence.
Then Emily spoke again—
"I might still have access."
Daniel frowned.
"To what?"
Emily hesitated.
Then said—
"Old files. Contacts. Information I didn't completely cut off."
Daniel's expression sharpened.
"That could help."
"It could also make things worse," she replied.
Daniel nodded.
"Yeah… but doing nothing isn't exactly safe either."
Emily knew he was right.
"I need to check something," she said.
Daniel stepped closer.
"You don't do it alone."
Emily looked at him.
"This isn't your problem."
Daniel didn't even blink.
"It is now."
Silence.
Because again—
He meant it.
A sudden knock broke the moment.
Both of them froze.
Not loud.
Not aggressive.
But this time—
It felt different.
More deliberate.
Emily's heartbeat quickened.
"That was fast," Daniel muttered.
Emily shook her head.
"No… this feels different."
Daniel moved slightly in front of her.
Instinct.
"I'll check," he said.
Emily grabbed his arm.
"Be careful."
Daniel gave a small nod.
He walked toward the door slowly.
Each step measured.
He opened it—
And froze.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Standing outside—
Was a woman.
Sharp eyes.
Calm expression.
Dressed too neatly for someone who just "stopped by."
"Daniel," she said.
His name—
Again.
Emily stepped closer.
"Who is that?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Because his mind was already racing.
"Someone I was hoping wouldn't show up," he said quietly.
The woman smiled slightly.
"Still as dramatic as ever," she said.
Emily's chest tightened.
"Care to introduce me?" she asked, stepping forward slightly.
Daniel's voice dropped.
"No."
The woman's smile didn't fade.
"I'm afraid that's not optional anymore."
Inside—
Noah stirred slightly in his sleep.
Unaware—
That the danger they feared—
Was no longer just outside.
It had found the door.
Again.
And this time—
It knew Daniel too.
Because whatever this was—
It wasn't just Emily's past anymore.
It was his.
And it was all colliding—
Right here.
Right now.
