Chapter 53 - The One Above Them All

The word hung in the air—

"Find them."

Miles away—

In a room far more polished… far more controlled—

A single screen glowed.

A figure stood in the shadows.

Face hidden.

Voice calm.

"Send the second team," they said.

No anger.

No panic.

Just certainty.

Back in the small room—

Everything felt tighter.

Closer.

Like the walls were slowly closing in.

Emily leaned against the table.

Trying to steady herself.

"This just got bigger, didn't it?"

The man gave a short laugh.

"You have no idea."

Daniel stood still.

Eyes fixed on the screen.

"Show me everything we have," he said.

The man nodded.

Typing quickly.

Files opened.

Names.

Transactions.

Connections.

But this time—

He filtered something specific.

"Here," he said.

A list appeared.

Short.

Very short.

Emily frowned.

"That's it?"

The man nodded.

"These are the top layer."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"And above them?"

The man hesitated.

Then said—

"There's always someone above."

He clicked another file.

This one—

Encrypted.

Different.

Harder to access.

"I couldn't fully break this," he admitted.

"But I got a piece."

The screen flickered.

A symbol appeared.

Simple.

Clean.

But something about it felt…

Wrong.

Daniel froze.

He knew it.

Emily noticed immediately.

"What?" she asked.

Daniel didn't answer at first.

Then—

Very quietly—

"I've seen that before."

The room went still.

The man turned to him.

"Where?"

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"In a place I wasn't supposed to be."

Emily stepped closer.

"Daniel… what is it?"

He looked at her.

And for the first time—

There was something in his eyes.

Not fear.

Something deeper.

"That symbol," he said slowly…

"Doesn't belong to the organization."

A pause.

"It belongs to the person controlling it."

Silence.

Because that meant—

Everything they had seen so far—

Was just the surface.

Noah looked up.

"Like a boss?" he asked.

Daniel nodded once.

"Yeah."

Noah thought for a second.

"Then we just beat the boss."

The man let out a small laugh.

"If only it worked like that."

Emily didn't laugh.

"Do you know who it is?" she asked.

Daniel hesitated.

Then shook his head.

"No."

A beat.

"But I know someone who might."

The man raised an eyebrow.

"You've got a lot of 'someone's' today."

Daniel ignored that.

"We need to find him."

Emily crossed her arms.

"And this person can be trusted?"

Daniel looked at her.

Then said honestly—

"I don't know."

Emily exhaled.

"Great."

The man leaned forward.

"If you're going after the top… you don't get safe options."

That was true.

Daniel turned back to the screen.

"We don't need safe."

A pause.

"We need answers."

The man nodded slowly.

"Then you better move fast."

Daniel frowned.

"Why?"

The man tapped another window.

"Because they're already moving faster."

A new alert popped up.

Different from before.

Sharper.

More aggressive.

Emily felt it instantly.

"What is that?"

The man's voice dropped.

"That…"

A pause.

"…isn't a search."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Then what is it?"

The man looked at him.

And said—

"It's a cleanup."

Silence.

Cold.

Heavy.

Noah gripped Emily tighter again.

"What does that mean?" he whispered.

Emily didn't answer.

Because she already knew.

Daniel said it instead.

"They're not trying to find us anymore."

A pause.

"They're trying to erase everything."

The screen flickered again.

Files disappearing.

Connections going dark.

The man started typing rapidly.

"They're wiping their own network," he said.

Emily's eyes widened.

"Why would they do that?"

Daniel's voice was quiet.

"Because we got too close."

And then—

The man froze.

"…Wait."

Daniel stepped closer.

"What?"

The man stared at the screen.

"They're not just deleting data…"

A pause.

His voice dropped.

"They're deleting people."

Silence crashed into the room.

Emily felt her blood run cold.

"No…"

Daniel didn't speak.

But his expression—

Said everything.

Because now—

This wasn't just dangerous.

It was deadly.

And the closer they got to the truth—

The fewer people would be left to tell it.

Including them.
