Chapter 14 - Chapter 14 – The Second Layer of Fear

The shift came without warning, yet the moment Zhao Tian released it, Lin Xuan understood that this was no longer the same battle.

The pressure didn't expand outward this time, nor did it crash down like before. Instead, it condensed into something far more subtle and far more dangerous. It felt closer, as if the distance between the concept and his thoughts had been erased completely.

Lin Xuan's body tensed instinctively, not out of panic, but recognition. Whatever Zhao Tian was doing now was fundamentally different from before.

Zhao Tian watched him carefully, his gaze steady and sharp. "You handled the outer layer," he said slowly. "That much is clear. But fear doesn't stop at what you can feel on the surface."

Lin Xuan didn't respond immediately. His breathing slowed as he focused inward, preparing himself. "Then show me," he said calmly.

Zhao Tian's lips curved slightly, but there was no humor in it this time. "You'll regret asking that."

The next moment, something changed.

There was no visible movement, no surge of energy, yet Lin Xuan felt it instantly. It didn't press against his body or wrap around him like before. Instead, it slipped directly into his awareness, silent and precise.

His vision didn't blur.

The world didn't distort.

But something inside him shifted.

A thought appeared.

Small.

Insignificant.

Yet completely out of place.

What if you fail again?

Lin Xuan's eyes narrowed slightly, and his breathing paused for just a fraction of a second.

Zhao Tian saw it.

"This is the real nature of fear," Zhao Tian said quietly. "Not what overwhelms you, but what stays with you."

Another thought surfaced.

You couldn't protect them before.

You won't protect anyone now.

Lin Xuan's fingers tightened unconsciously, and for the first time since the fight began, his stance wavered just slightly.

The pressure wasn't forcing him anymore.

It was guiding him.

Shaping his thoughts.

"You don't fight fear by resisting it," Zhao Tian continued, his voice calm and steady. "You lose to it the moment you start listening."

Lin Xuan exhaled slowly, his chest rising and falling as he forced his breathing back into rhythm. The thoughts didn't disappear, but he didn't chase them either.

"…So this is the second layer," he said quietly.

Zhao Tian nodded. "This is where most people break."

Lin Xuan let out a faint breath, then gave a small, almost amused smile. "Not bad," he said. "You finally got serious."

Zhao Tian's eyes sharpened slightly. "You still think this is something to take lightly?"

Lin Xuan shook his head. "No," he said. "I just think you're underestimating me again."

Another thought surfaced immediately.

You're lying to yourself.

This is how it starts.

Lin Xuan's jaw tightened for a brief moment, but then he relaxed it again, letting the thought pass without holding onto it.

Zhao Tian watched closely, and this time, his expression changed more noticeably. "You're not rejecting it," he said slowly. "You're… ignoring it."

Lin Xuan looked at him. "Not ignoring," he replied. "Just not letting it decide anything."

For a brief moment, Zhao Tian didn't respond. Then he let out a quiet breath, something thoughtful passing through his gaze.

"…Interesting," he murmured.

The pressure deepened again, not in strength, but in precision. The thoughts came faster now, sharper, more personal, each one aimed at something deeper than the last.

You'll fail.

You'll lose again.

You're still too weak.

Lin Xuan felt each one clearly, but instead of resisting them, he let them pass through his mind like ripples on water. His breathing remained steady, his posture firm, his focus anchored.

At the same time, the system's presence within him became more active.

[Deep-Level Influence Detected]

[Mental Stability Support Initiated]

A faint clarity spread through his thoughts, subtle but effective. The intrusive ideas didn't disappear, but they no longer lingered as strongly as before.

Zhao Tian's gaze sharpened further as he noticed the change. "It's happening again," he said quietly. "That interference…"

His eyes locked onto Lin Xuan.

"That artifact of yours," he continued, "it's not just protecting your body. It's stabilizing your mind too."

Lin Xuan didn't confirm it, but his silence was enough.

Zhao Tian let out a soft laugh, though this time it carried a hint of excitement. "You really came prepared," he said. "Now I'm even more curious."

He took a step forward, and this time the concept around him condensed further, as if everything had been drawn inward to a single point.

"Let's see how far it goes," Zhao Tian said. "If your artifact can really keep up."

The next instant, he moved.

Faster than before.

Sharper.

His attack didn't just carry force—it carried intent, precise and focused, aiming directly at the moment where Lin Xuan's thoughts and movements aligned.

Lin Xuan reacted immediately, stepping forward to meet him, his body moving in sync with his stabilized mind.

Their clash echoed through the valley again, heavier than before.

This time, however, the difference was clear.

Zhao Tian's concept was deeper.

More refined.

But Lin Xuan…

Was no longer affected the same way.

Each thought that surfaced was acknowledged and discarded in the same instant. Each attempt to disrupt him failed to create the opening Zhao Tian expected.

Their movements accelerated.

Their attacks collided again and again.

Neither side gave ground.

Then, in the middle of another exchange, Zhao Tian's expression changed again.

"…You're not breaking," he said.

Lin Xuan stepped back half a step, then steadied himself, his breathing controlled. "Should I?"

Zhao Tian didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at him more carefully than ever before, as if trying to see through something that still didn't make sense.

Then he spoke, his voice quieter than before.

"This isn't just resistance," he said. "You're adapting… faster than you should."

Lin Xuan didn't deny it.

Because inside his mind—

The system responded again.

[Concept Analysis Progress: 47%]

[New Function Approaching Unlock]

Lin Xuan's eyes flickered for a brief moment, but he didn't let it show.

Zhao Tian took another step forward, the pressure around him stabilizing once more.

"…Whatever that artifact is," Zhao Tian said slowly, "it's more dangerous than I thought."

Lin Xuan met his gaze, calm and steady.

"And you're only realizing that now?" he replied.

Zhao Tian smiled faintly, but this time there was no arrogance left in it—only focus.

"No," he said. "Now I'm starting to take you seriously."

The air between them tightened again.

The fight wasn't ending.

It was evolving.

And neither of them intended to stop.

But deep inside Lin Xuan's mind, the system's voice echoed once more, clearer than ever before.

[Warning]

[New Capability Unlock Imminent]

Lin Xuan clenched his fist slowly, his gaze locking onto Zhao Tian.

Because this time—

Whatever came next…

Would change everything.
