Chapter 43 - Chapter 42: The Hound's Awakening

Vol 02: The Hunt │ Part 04: In Between

1

The next morning, Kaelen woke to find Fenris staring at the sky.

The hound stood at the entrance to the longhouse, his head lifted, his amethyst eyes fixed on the twin moons that still hung pale against the dawn. His metallic fur shimmered with faint violet light, pulsing in rhythm with Kaelen's heartbeat.

Kaelen sat up, rubbing his eyes. "Fenris?"

The hound did not turn. Through the bond, Kaelen felt something new—a strange, electric energy humming beneath Fenris's calm exterior. It was like the feeling before a storm.

Lyra appeared beside him, her journal in her hands. "He has been like that for an hour. I think the Between is affecting him."

Kaelen walked to Fenris and placed a hand on the hound's back. The fur was warm, almost hot, and the violet light pulsed stronger at his touch.

"Fenris," he said again. "What is happening?"

The hound finally turned. His amethyst eyes met Kaelen's—and in that moment, the bond flared.

Kaelen gasped. He saw through Fenris's eyes—the twin moons, the strange sky, the faint shimmer of energy in the air. He felt the hound's senses: the scent of the strange grass, the distant calls of unknown creatures, the warmth of the rising sun.

And beneath it all, he felt Fenris's hunger. Not for food. For growth.

"He is changing," Kaelen said. "The Between is changing him."

2

Elder Amara appeared at the longhouse entrance. Her spiral patterns glowed faintly as she studied Fenris.

"The bond," she said. "It is not just emotional. It is magical. The hound is tied to your mark. As the Between's resonance touches you, it touches him as well."

"He is evolving," Lyra said. "Like Kaelen's Kites."

Amara nodded. "The hound is a Void-Stalker—a creature born of the Maelstrom. His potential is greater than any ordinary beast. In the Between, that potential can be unlocked."

"What do we do?" Kaelen asked.

Amara looked at Fenris, at the violet light pulsing through his fur. "Let him hunt. The Between has its own creatures—dangers that will test his strength. If he survives, he will grow. If he does not..." She did not finish.

Kaelen looked at Fenris. Through the bond, he felt the hound's eagerness, his readiness.

"Do you want to hunt?" Kaelen asked.

Fenris's tail wagged once. A clear answer.

"Then go," Kaelen said. "But come back."

Fenris turned and vanished into the tall grass, his metallic fur blending with the dawn light.

They waited.

Kaelen sat at the edge of the settlement, his eyes fixed on the grass where Fenris had disappeared. Lyra sat beside him, her journal open but untouched. Zora perched on a nearby roof, her cat eyes scanning the horizon.

Hours passed. The twin suns climbed higher in the strange sky. Kaelen felt the bond pulsing—steady, strong, alive. Fenris was not injured. He was hunting.

Then the bond flared.

Kaelen stood, his hand going to the twin blades at his hips. "He is coming back."

Fenris emerged from the grass, dragging something behind him. It was a creature unlike anything Kaelen had seen—a scaled beast with too many legs and a long, serpentine body. Its head hung limp; its neck crushed by Fenris's jaws.

Fenris dropped the carcass at Kaelen's feet and sat, panting. His fur was no longer just violet-streaked. The violet light had spread, coiling in patterns across his body like living tattoos. His eyes glowed brighter, and his form seemed larger, more powerful.

Kaelen knelt beside him. Through the bond, he felt a new strength—Fenris's muscles were denser, his bones harder, his senses sharper.

"You are changing," Kaelen whispered. "Just like me."

Fenris pressed his head against Kaelen's chest, directly over the mark. The violet light from his fur seeped through the tunic, mingling with the glow of the Kites.

For a moment, they were one—boy and hound, Progenitor and Void-Stalker.

Then the light faded, and they were separate again.

But something had changed.

Elder Amara examined the creature Fenris had killed. She knelt beside the carcass, her fingers tracing its scales.

"A Ravager," she said. "They hunt in packs. One is rare—they rarely travel alone."

"Then there are more," Lyra said.

Amara nodded. "And they will come looking for their packmate. The hound has drawn attention."

Kaelen looked at Fenris. The hound's ears were pricked, his eyes scanning the grass.

"Let them come," Kaelen said. "We will be ready."

The Ravagers attacked at dusk.

They came from the grass without warning—six of them, their scales shimmering in the fading light. They were larger than the one Fenris had killed, their eyes hungry and intelligent.

Kaelen drew the twin blades. The Combat Kite flared.

"Lyra, stay back. Zora, take the left flank. Fenris—"

The hound was already moving.

Fenris was faster than before. His body was a blur of violet light, his claws tearing through scales, his jaws crushing bone. He moved like he had been fighting these creatures for years, not minutes.

Kaelen joined the fight, the twin blades singing. The Combat Kite guided his body, and the Insight Kite fed him the Ravagers' intentions. He cut through one, then another.

But Fenris was the true force. He killed three Ravagers before Kaelen finished his second. His fur blazed with violet light, and his eyes burned like twin stars.

When the last Ravager fell, Fenris stood over its body, breathing hard. His form was larger now—almost as large as a horse—and his claws gleamed like obsidian.

Kaelen sheathed his blades and approached him. Through the bond, he felt Fenris's satisfaction, his pride.

"You hunted them," Kaelen said. "You led them here. You wanted me to see."

Fenris wagged his tail once. A clear answer.

Kaelen laughed—a rare, genuine sound. "You are more than a hound. You are my partner."

Fenris pressed his head against Kaelen's chest, and the bond pulsed with warmth.

That night, Kaelen sat by the fire, Fenris curled at his feet. The hound's form had not fully returned to its original size—he was larger now, more powerful.

Lyra sat across from him, her journal open. "He is evolving. Like you."

"Faster," Kaelen said. "The Between is feeding him."

Lyra nodded. "Elder Amara said the bond is two-way. Your growth feeds his growth. And his growth feeds yours."

Kaelen looked at Fenris. The hound's violet patterns glowed softly in the firelight.

"Then we will grow together," Kaelen said. "We will become what we need to be."

Fenris's tail thumped once against the ground.

Together, the bond pulsed.

"Together," Kaelen agreed.
