Vol 02: The Hunt │ Part 04: In Between
The End of Vol 02
1
The Warrens swallowed them whole.
Kaelen moved through the tunnels like a shadow, the guinunting in his hand, the Void's Heart Core pulsing against his palm. Fenris pressed close to his side, his violet patterns dimmed. Lyra followed, her Mind Kite reaching out, sensing the thoughts of the guards ahead. Zora climbed the walls, her cat eyes piercing the darkness.
They had waited. They had planned. Now it was time.
"There is a patrol ahead," Lyra whispered. "Three agents. They are tired. They are thinking about their families."
Kaelen nodded. "We go around."
He stepped into the shadow—and emerged on the other side, Fenris beside him. Lyra and Zora followed through the void.
They moved deeper into the Warrens.
2
The Heart's resonance grew stronger with each step.
Kaelen could feel it pulsing through the stone, a slow, heavy rhythm that matched his heartbeat. The void in his chest hummed in response, reaching toward the crimson light.
"He is close," Lyra said. "I can feel his thoughts. He knows we are coming."
Kaelen touched the guinunting. The Core pulsed, warm and alive.
"Then we do not keep him waiting."
3
They reached the Heart chamber.
It was vast, circular, lit by the crimson glow of the Heart. The stone stood at the center, pulsing with a slow, heavy rhythm. Solon stood before it, his bandaged hand pressed against its surface. His Echo Mark blazed beneath his robes, pulsing with crimson light.
Behind him, the Inferno soldiers stood in rows—their bodies scarred, their eyes empty. They were broken, hollow, their minds consumed by Solon's control.
Solon turned. His eyes burned with crimson fire.
"Kaelen."
Kaelen stepped forward, the guinunting in his hand.
"It is over, Solon."
Solon laughed—a cold, terrible sound.
"You think you can stop me? I have the Heart. I have the power. I have an army."
"You have nothing." Kaelen raised the blade. "You are a coward who hides behind stolen power. And I am done running."
Solon's eyes narrowed. His Echo Mark blazed.
"Then come," he said. "Come and die."
4
Solon attacked first.
His Echo Mark blazed with crimson light, and a wave of Resonance Suppression washed over Kaelen. His Kites flickered, weakened—but they did not die. He had grown too strong.
Kaelen moved. The Combat Kite guided his body, the Insight Kite fed him Solon's intentions, the Void Step carried him through shadows.
He struck.
The guinunting sang through the air, the Core blazing with violet light. Solon blocked with his bandaged hand, the crimson energy of the Heart shielding him.
"You cannot defeat me," Solon snarled. "I have the power of the Heart."
"You have the power of nothing." Kaelen swung again. "You are a broken man who stole power he could not control."
5
Solon's Will Domination hit like a wave.
It crashed into Kaelen's mind, filling him with doubt, fear, confusion. He stumbled, his blade faltering.
You are weak, Solon's voice echoed in his mind. You have always been weak. You could not save Thorne. You could not save Rook and Torrin. You will fail everyone you love.
Kaelen felt the words like knives. His resolve wavered.
Then he heard Lyra's voice in his mind: Kaelen. He is lying. You are not weak. You are not failing. We are with you.
Lyra's Mind Kite blazed, creating a mental barrier around the group. The doubt faded. The fear retreated.
Kaelen raised the guinunting.
"You are wrong, Solon. I am not weak. I am not failing. I have people who love me. And that makes me stronger than you will ever be."
6
Zora attacked.
She dropped from the ceiling, her claw covers extended, her Combat Kite blazing. Solon turned, his Pain Absorption activating—but Zora was too fast. Her claws raked across his arm, drawing blood.
Solon screamed.
Fenris attacked next, his violet light blazing. He lunged at Solon, teeth bared, forcing him to divide his attention.
Kaelen saw the opening.
He stepped into the shadow—and emerged behind Solon, the guinunting raised.
"Solon," he said. "This ends now."
He drove the blade into Solon's back.
7
The Void's Heart Core blazed with violet light.
The blade pierced Solon's Echo Mark—the triangular mark that had been hidden for so long. The Core pulsed, sending a shockwave of violet energy through Solon's body.
Solon screamed.
The silver thread connecting him to the Heart flickered, wavered, and shattered.
The Heart's crimson light dimmed.
Solon fell to his knees, gasping. His Echo Mark still pulsed—faint, but alive. He had lost the Heart's amplification. But his own abilities remained.
"What... what have you done?" he whispered.
Kaelen stepped back, the guinunting still in his hand.
"I have freed you from the Heart," he said. "You are no longer its puppet."
Solon looked at his hands. His Echo Mark still pulsed—faint, but alive.
He laughed…a broken, bitter sound.
"You think this change anything? I am still Solon. I will still hunt you. I will still destroy everything you love."
8
Solon raised his hand.
His Pain Absorption activated, transferring his wounds to the broken soldiers around him. They screamed and fell, their bodies breaking under the strain.
His Will Domination flared, not at Kaelen, but at his soldiers.
"Die for me," Solon commanded.
The soldiers lunged at Kaelen, their eyes empty, their bodies moving against their will. They threw themselves at his blade, buying Solon time.
Kaelen cut them down, but each death was a delay.
Solon fled.
He disappeared into the shadows of the Warrens, his Echo Mark still pulsing, his wounds transferred to the fallen.
Kaelen stood among the bodies, the guinunting in his hand.
"He is gone," Lyra said.
Kaelen touched the guinunting. The Core was silent.
"He will be back," he said. "He will always be back."
9
Some of the soldiers were still there. Solon's will dominion was released after he fled.
They stood in rows, their eyes empty, their bodies broken. Solon's Will Domination had faded, but they were still under his control—hollow vessels, waiting for commands.
Lyra stepped forward, her Mind Kite blazing. "I can feel them. Their minds are shattered. They are not fighting. They are just... waiting."
Kaelen looked at the soldiers. They were victims. Solon had broken them, used them, discarded them.
"We cannot leave them here," he said. "They will die. Or worse, someone else will use them."
Zora lowered her claws. "What do we do with them?"
Kaelen touched the guinunting. The Core was silent, the Heart dormant. But the soldiers were still connected to something—a faint echo of Solon's control.
Lyra's Mind Kite flared. "I can break the last threads. They will be free. But their minds are shattered. They will need time to heal."
"Do it," Kaelen said.
Lyra closed her eyes. Her Kite pulsed—and the soldiers collapsed, their bodies going limp. The last traces of Solon's control faded.
They were free.
Kaelen looked at the fallen soldiers. "We cannot carry them all. But we can give them a chance."
He used Void Step to carry the soldiers—one by one—to the Warrens' entrance. He laid them on the rocky ground, where the Grey Cabinet agents would find them. They would be taken to the Conclave, or to their families.
They would have a chance to heal.
10
Kaelen walked to the Heart.
The stone was dormant now, its crimson light faded to nothing. It looked like a ruby—beautiful, inert, dead.
He placed his hand on its surface. The void in his chest hummed, but the Heart did not respond. Its power was contained. Dormant.
He could not leave it here. Solon would return. Someone else would claim it.
Kaelen lifted the Heart from its pedestal. It was heavy—heavier than it looked.
"I will hide it," he said. "Somewhere no one will find it."
Lyra stepped forward. "Where?"
Kaelen looked at the guinunting. The Core pulsed, warm and alive.
"The Valley of Echoes," he said. "The cave where I found the Core. The Heart will be safe there."
He stepped into the shadow—and was gone.
11
He returned to the Warrens an hour later.
The soldiers were still lying at the entrance, their bodies breathing, their minds slowly healing. Grey Cabinet agents would find them soon.
Lyra approached him. "Is it done?"
Kaelen nodded. "The Heart is hidden. No one will find it."
Zora looked at the soldiers. "And them?"
Kaelen looked at the fallen. "They will survive. They will heal. That is all we can do for them."
He turned to his friends. "Now we go to the Between. We gather those who wish to leave. And we give them a new home."
