Chapter 41 — The Door Beyond Exile
Darkness.
Not the darkness of night.
Not the darkness of a cave or an unlit chamber.
This darkness felt alive.
The endless void of the Phantom Zone stretched infinitely in every direction, a shattered dimension where reality itself felt unstable. The air—if it could even be called air—rippled like disturbed water. Shapes formed and dissolved across the gray horizon like memories that could not fully exist.
There was no sky.
There was no ground.
And time itself seemed to drift like a broken current.
The first to awaken was General Dru-Zod.
His eyes snapped open violently as his mind forced itself back into awareness. His body reacted on instinct, muscles tightening as if preparing for battle.
But something was wrong.
He was not floating.
He was not paralyzed.
Slowly, Zod pushed himself upward.
His arm moved.
His fingers clenched.
He froze.
For centuries, the Phantom Zone had been Krypton's ultimate prison—a place where the body existed but could barely move, where prisoners drifted in a half-conscious state.
Yet Zod stood.
Around his wrists, the suppression cuffs still glowed faintly with Kryptonian energy restraints.
But their draining effect felt… weak.
Very weak.
Zod's eyes narrowed.
"This is not right."
Nearby, another figure stirred.
Jor-El inhaled sharply as consciousness returned to him. His eyes scanned the endless gray expanse surrounding them.
"Zod…?"
Zod turned slightly.
"You're awake."
Jor-El slowly sat upright, confusion written across his face.
"The Phantom Zone…"
He lifted his restrained hands, studying the glowing cuffs.
"They should be suppressing our physiology completely."
Yet he felt his strength returning.
Across the strange landscape, other Kryptonians began awakening one by one.
Members of the House of El.
Members of the House of Zod.
Members of the House of Ze.
Zor-El helped Alura rise to her feet while Lara Lor-Van looked around cautiously, her expression tense as she studied the unstable dimension surrounding them.
The void distorted constantly.
Gravity seemed uncertain.
Some pieces of the dimension stretched upward like torn fabric, while others twisted sideways into impossible angles.
"Something is wrong," Zor-El said quietly.
Jor-El nodded.
"The Phantom Zone should not behave like this."
Zod tested his restraints.
His muscles tightened.
A faint crack appeared along the surface of the glowing cuffs.
Everyone went still.
Zod stared at them.
Then slowly…
He clenched his fists harder.
With a sharp metallic snap, the restraints shattered.
The sound echoed through the silent dimension.
Zor-El stepped back in shock.
"That should be impossible."
Jor-El examined the broken pieces.
"The Phantom Zone drains Kryptonian cellular energy," he said quietly.
He looked out into the distorted horizon.
"Unless…"
Before he could finish the thought—
A pulse of light spread through the void.
Every Kryptonian turned.
Far in the distance, a small sphere of light flickered into existence.
Thin lines of Kryptonian code spiraled around it, forming complex holographic symbols that floated in mid-air.
Jor-El's eyes widened.
"That's Kryptonian technology."
The sphere expanded slowly.
The light stabilized.
Then a voice echoed across the dimension.
Calm.
Controlled.
Familiar.
"Greetings."
The holographic image appeared within the sphere.
A tall figure.
Crimson hair.
Sharp, calculating eyes.
Von-Ra.
The scientist whose secret experiments had threatened Krypton's ruling council.
Zod's expression hardened immediately.
"You."
Von-Ra observed the gathered Kryptonians calmly through the projection.
"You survived the dimensional transition," he said.
"As expected."
Jor-El stepped forward cautiously.
"You modified the Phantom Zone."
Von-Ra tilted his head slightly.
"Modified?"
He shook his head.
"No."
"I corrected it."
Zod crossed his arms.
"Start explaining."
The holographic projection slowly rotated, scanning the surrounding dimension.
"For centuries," Von-Ra began, "the Kryptonian Council believed the Phantom Zone was a prison."
He paused.
"It never was."
Confusion spread across the gathered Kryptonians.
Jor-El frowned.
"That contradicts every historical record."
Von-Ra continued calmly.
"The Phantom Zone was originally designed as a refuge."
"A dimensional shelter outside conventional reality."
"Outside planetary extinction events."
The meaning struck Jor-El immediately.
His eyes widened.
"it is our plan to let the council imprisoned us into this realm."
"when the planet explode, we will get out"
Von-Ra did not deny it.
"Yes."
"The planet's core was destabilizing faster than we and the council believed."
"The destruction was inevitable."
Alura stepped forward.
"But the council refused evacuation."
Dru-Zod nodded.
"Exactly."
"Their pride made them blind."
He looked across the assembled Kryptonians.
"So I gave them another solution."
Zod's voice dropped dangerously low.
"You manipulated them."
"No."
Von-Ra said it without hesitation.
"I understood their fears."
"I simply guided their decision."
The realization spread through the crowd like shockwaves.
"They thought they were punishing you," Von-Ra said slowly.
Von-Ra's hologram flickered slightly.
"but in truth, they didn't know it will serve as saving you."
He looked across the three houses.
"The council believed they were imprisoning you…"
His voice lowered slightly.
"…but they only opened the door."
Silence filled the Phantom Zone.
Jor-El spoke quietly.
"that when you intervene, you modified this place"
"You turned the banishment into an evacuation."
Von-Ra nodded.
"When Krypton exploded… we expect that this place will collapse. then all of you will escape"
Dru-Zod answered
"but this space stronger than we thought"
"…you were already beyond reach."
"plus the destruction outside is so chaotic that it can disrupt time and space"
(AN: if the MC somehow didn't modified the phantom zone, they will die without knowing how they died. they are frozen in time like the previous kryptonian prisoners but the creatures inside are not. in short, they can't get out now because the planetary explosion didnt manage to stabilize the phantom zone as they predicted it would. so another problem arise inside the phantom zone.)
Zor-El exhaled slowly.
"So we survived. on the other way around"
Von-Ra did not respond immediately.
Instead, he looked toward the distant horizon of the dimension.
His expression changed slightly.
Something close to concern.
"There is something else you must understand."
The void trembled.
A deep vibration rolled across the Phantom Zone.
The ground beneath the Kryptonians shifted slightly as if the dimension itself had inhaled.
Zod turned toward the distant darkness.
His warrior instincts ignited instantly.
"What was that?"
Von-Ra's projection flickered.
"For centuries, Krypton believed the Phantom Zone was empty."
His voice grew quieter.
"But they never explored it fully."
Far away…
Something moved.
A shadow.
Enormous.
Even from this distance it stretched across the distorted horizon like a mountain walking through the void.
Jor-El felt the dimensional energy shift violently.
"That's not possible…"
The shadow shifted again.
Closer now.
Much closer.
Von-Ra's final words echoed through the Phantom Zone.
"You were not sent here alone."
The massive shape moved beneath the gray darkness.
Zod stared at it, his expression grim.
Then he spoke quietly.
"We were not banished into a prison…"
The shadow rose higher.
"…we were thrown into a hunting ground."
The creature's massive silhouette shifted again in the endless darkness.
And this time—
It was moving toward them.
