Chapter 48 — Plans Within Plans
Morning sunlight spilled across the skyline of New York as the city slowly awakened. Steam rose from underground vents, street vendors opened their stalls, and the distant horns of ships echoed across the harbor.
On the rooftop of a quiet building overlooking Hell's Kitchen stood Von-Ra.
Beside him, as always, stood Koryn.
Von's eyes scanned the district below like a general surveying a battlefield.
"This place," Von said calmly, "will become the center of everything."
Koryn tilted his head.
"My king… this city appears insignificant compared to the capitals of Earth."
Von smiled faintly.
"That is what makes it dangerous."
He looked toward Manhattan.
"In the future, gods will walk these streets. Armies will fight in its skies. Empires from beyond the stars will attempt to conquer this world."
Koryn frowned slightly.
"And we are here to prevent that?"
Von answered quietly.
"We are here to ensure Krypton survives it."
Later that morning.
Inside a modest law office, Arthur paced nervously behind his desk as Von and Koryn sat across from him.
Arthur rubbed his temples.
"I won't lie to you, Mr. Archea… buying ten acres in New York even if it is in the border is already difficult."
He placed several papers on the desk.
"But the real problem is ownership."
Von studied the documents calmly.
Arthur continued.
"The land you want is divided between seven different owners."
He pointed to the list.
"Three private landowners… two industrial companies… one government development claim…"
Arthur hesitated.
"And one… criminal organization."
Koryn's eyes sharpened.
"Criminal organization?"
Arthur nodded.
"One of the Italian mafia families operating around Hell's Kitchen."
He sighed.
"They don't sell land. They control territory."
The room fell silent.
Arthur expected frustration.
Instead, Von simply asked:
"How much do they want?"
Arthur blinked.
"You misunderstand. They won't negotiate."
Von leaned back slightly.
"Everyone negotiates."
Arthur studied the young man carefully.
There was something unsettling about how calm he remained.
Finally Von spoke again.
"Buy out the other six owners."
Arthur frowned.
"And the mafia?"
Von's eyes turned toward the window.
"I will handle them."
Across the city.
Inside a secret testing hangar owned by Howard Stark, engineers hurried around a strange metallic engine mounted on a steel frame.
The machine looked unlike anything seen before.
Howard stood proudly beside it.
"Gentlemen," he announced, "today we test the future."
One engineer raised a concern.
"Sir… the turbine pressure may exceed structural limits."
Howard waved him off.
"Progress always involves risk."
He flipped the ignition switch.
The engine roared to life.
Air rushed through the compressor.
Fuel ignited.
The turbine screamed as it spun faster and faster.
For a brief moment, the machine stabilized.
Then—
BOOM.
The engine exploded in a violent burst of smoke and sparks.
Metal fragments scattered across the hangar floor.
Howard coughed as smoke filled the room.
One of the engineers shouted.
"The alloy can't withstand the temperature!"
Howard stared at the damaged engine.
Instead of frustration…
He looked excited.
He grabbed the notebook Von had given him.
"These calculations assume materials that don't exist yet…"
He smiled slowly.
"Unless our mysterious friend knows something we don't."
Inside Stark Industries later that afternoon, Peggy Carter stood beside Howard's desk reviewing a folder.
Her expression was serious.
"I looked into your new business partner."
Howard leaned back casually.
"And?"
Peggy placed the file on the table.
"Von Archea appeared in America less than a week ago."
Howard shrugged.
"He's an immigrant."
Peggy continued.
"No school records."
She turned a page.
"No documented residence in the United Kingdom."
Another page.
"No immigration record entering the United States."
Howard frowned slightly.
"That's… unusual."
Peggy looked directly at him.
"His identity is too clean."
Howard crossed his arms.
"So what are you suggesting?"
Peggy closed the folder.
"I'm suggesting I want to meet him."
Far beyond Earth.
Deep beneath the surface of Mars, machines worked tirelessly.
The artificial intelligence Ruby monitored hundreds of operations simultaneously.
Mining drones extracted rare minerals.
Construction machines expanded underground tunnels.
And inside a massive chamber…
Rows of incubation pods glowed softly.
Within them, developing biological forms floated in nutrient fluid.
Kryptonian embryos.
Ruby spoke calmly.
"Project Phoenix status report."
Holographic data filled the chamber.
"Genetic stability: 87 percent."
"Embryonic development progressing normally."
"Projected activation of first generation: pending."
Suddenly one of Ruby's sensors detected something.
Her processors analyzed the anomaly.
A faint signal.
Coming from deep space.
Ruby ran multiple scans.
The signal repeated.
Unknown origin.
Unknown technology.
Ruby paused.
Then transmitted a report directly to Von.
"Alert: unidentified transmission detected beyond solar system boundary."
Night returned to New York.
Von stood once again on the rooftop overlooking the city.
A small holographic projection of Ruby appeared beside him.
"Master," Ruby reported.
"The Phoenix Project is progressing successfully."
Von nodded.
"And the embryos?"
"Stable."
"Excellent."
Ruby hesitated slightly.
"However, I have detected an unknown signal approaching the outer solar system."
Von's eyes narrowed.
"Identify it."
"Analysis incomplete."
The hologram flickered.
"Origin unknown."
Silence hung in the air.
Koryn spoke quietly.
"Should we investigate?"
Von looked toward the endless sky.
"No."
He turned back to the city.
"Not yet."
Koryn watched him carefully.
"My king… may I ask a question?"
Von nodded.
"Ask."
Koryn gestured toward New York.
"Are we here to protect this world… or conquer it?"
Von looked at the countless lights of the city.
Then he answered calmly.
"Both."
