Chapter 56 - A BOND THAT SHOULDN'T EXIST

The air shifted.

Not slowly.

Not gently.

Violently.

Like something unseen had just been forced into existence.

Aria gasped, her body arching slightly as the pain in her chest intensified.

It wasn't physical.

Not entirely.

It felt like something inside her was stretching—expanding—reaching beyond what it was meant to hold.

"Aria!"

Kael's voice cut through the room as he caught her before she collapsed again.

Her fingers gripped his shirt tightly.

"…it hurts."

Her voice was strained.

Unsteady.

Alder stepped forward quickly, his calm finally cracking.

"Describe it."

Aria shook her head weakly.

"I can't—it's not—"

She sucked in a sharp breath.

"…it's pulling."

Rowan frowned.

"Pulling what?"

Her eyes flickered silver again.

Brighter this time.

Unstable.

"…him."

Silence.

Every head turned.

Toward Silas.

Because he felt it too.

His body had gone still.

Completely still.

Like he was bracing against something invisible.

Or surrendering to it.

His breathing slowed.

His glowing eyes deepened.

"…it's happening."

Marcus blinked.

"…what is happening?"

No one answered him.

Because no one understood it fully.

But they could feel it.

That connection.

That pull.

Strengthening.

Tightening.

Locking into place.

Kael's expression darkened dangerously.

"Step back."

Silas didn't move.

"I can't."

The answer was simple.

Honest.

Unavoidable.

Varkos growled low.

"You will."

Silas shook his head slightly.

"No."

And then—

He took a step forward.

Not by choice.

By force.

His body moved like something else was guiding it.

Dragging it.

Toward her.

Rowan tensed instantly.

"Stop him."

He moved first.

Fast.

Closing the distance in a blink.

His hand shot out—

Grabbing Silas's arm.

But the moment he did—

A pulse of energy exploded outward.

Invisible.

But powerful.

Rowan was thrown back instantly.

Slamming into the wall.

Hard.

Marcus jumped.

"WHAT WAS THAT?!"

Lena moved to help Rowan up.

"You okay?"

Rowan winced.

"…I've been better."

His eyes snapped back to Silas.

"That wasn't him."

Alder nodded slowly.

"No."

His gaze darkened.

"That was the bond."

Silas staggered forward again.

Closer.

Closer.

His jaw clenched tightly.

"I'm not controlling this."

Kael stepped forward.

Placing himself between Silas and Aria.

Blocking him again.

"You don't need to."

His voice was low.

Deadly.

"I'll stop you."

Silas met his gaze.

And for the first time—

There was tension between them.

Real tension.

Not words.

Not warnings.

Power.

Clashing.

"You can't."

Kael's aura surged.

"I can."

Silas didn't back down.

Because he couldn't.

Not with the bond pulling him forward.

Not with something inside him responding to her.

Aria gasped again.

The pain spiking.

"Stop—"

Her voice trembled.

"Both of you—stop—"

But it was too late.

The connection surged again.

Stronger.

Faster.

Like it had reached a breaking point—

And decided to cross it.

Alder stepped forward sharply.

"This is no longer just a bond."

Marcus blinked.

"…then what is it now?"

Alder's answer came quietly.

"A merge."

Silence.

Absolute.

Marcus stared.

"…a what?"

Rowan pushed himself up.

"Explain that in simple terms."

Alder didn't look away from Aria.

"It means their connection is no longer one-sided."

A pause.

"It's becoming shared."

That made everything worse.

Kael's expression darkened further.

"Stop it."

Alder shook his head slightly.

"I don't think we can."

Silas stumbled again.

Dropping to one knee.

His breathing uneven now.

But his eyes—

Still locked on Aria.

"…you feel it too."

Aria nodded weakly.

Tears forming at the corners of her eyes.

"…yes."

Marcus whispered,

"…this is getting out of hand."

Lena didn't disagree.

"This isn't normal."

Varkos growled.

"It's dangerous."

Alder finally looked at Kael.

"Yes."

Very.

Kael's jaw clenched.

"What happens if it completes?"

Silence.

Alder didn't answer immediately.

And that hesitation—

Said everything.

Rowan's voice dropped.

"…Alder."

Alder exhaled slowly.

"They will be permanently linked."

Marcus blinked.

"…like mates?"

Alder shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"Stronger."

The word hit hard.

Kael's eyes turned cold.

Dangerous.

"No."

Silas lifted his head slightly.

"…yes."

Kael moved instantly.

Grabbing him by the collar.

Forcing him up.

"You don't get to decide that."

Silas didn't fight back.

Didn't resist.

But his voice remained steady.

"It's already happening."

Aria cried out softly.

The pressure in her chest building again.

Too much.

Too fast.

"I can't—"

Her voice broke.

"I can't hold it—"

The bond surged violently.

A pulse of silver energy burst outward.

Knocking everyone back again.

Kael held his ground.

Barely.

Silas didn't move.

Didn't fall.

Because the force—

Wasn't pushing him away.

It was pulling him closer.

Alder's eyes widened.

"…it's accelerating."

Rowan groaned from the floor.

"Of course it is."

Marcus looked like he was reconsidering his life choices.

"I did not sign up for this."

Aria's vision blurred.

Her body trembling.

"…make it stop…"

Kael turned back to her instantly.

"Aria, listen to me."

Her eyes struggled to focus on him.

"You control it."

She shook her head weakly.

"No—I don't—"

"You do."

His voice was firm.

Grounding.

"You always have."

Silas whispered,

"…he's right."

Kael shot him a glare.

"Don't speak."

But Silas didn't look at him.

Only at Aria.

"You just have to choose."

Her breathing slowed slightly.

Not steady.

But enough.

"…choose what?"

Silas's voice softened.

"Who holds the bond."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Alder's eyes sharpened.

"That's it."

Rowan frowned.

"What is?"

Alder looked at Aria.

"You're letting it act on its own."

A pause.

"You need to take control of it."

Aria swallowed.

"…how?"

Alder didn't hesitate.

"You decide what he is to you."

The words hung in the air.

Clear.

Simple.

Terrifying.

Marcus blinked.

"…that's it?"

Rowan shook his head.

"That's not simple at all."

Kael's grip tightened slightly around Aria.

"You don't need him."

Silas didn't react.

Didn't argue.

But his eyes remained steady.

Waiting.

Not forcing.

Just… waiting.

Aria looked between them.

Kael.

Silas.

Two forces pulling in completely different ways.

Her heart pounded.

Her mind raced.

And the bond—

Trembled.

Waiting for her decision.

Her voice came out barely above a whisper.

"…I don't understand what he is."

Alder answered quietly.

"Then define him."

Silence.

Then—

The bond surged again.

Not violently this time.

But expectantly.

Waiting.

For her.

For her choice.

And for the first time—

Aria realized something terrifying.

If she chose wrong—

There would be no undoing it.
