Chapter 64 - A LINE DRAWN IN BLOOD

The silence didn't last.

It never did.

Not after something like that.

The air was still—but not calm.

Heavy.

Like the world was waiting to see what would happen next.

Aria stood where the energy had collapsed.

Breathing steady.

Eyes no longer blazing—

But far from normal.

Controlled.

Sharp.

Awake in a way she hadn't been before.

Across from her—

Darius didn't move.

Didn't attack.

Didn't retreat.

He simply watched.

And that—

Was worse.

Kael reached her first.

Closing the distance in seconds.

His hand wrapped around her arm.

Firm.

Grounding.

"Are you hurt?"

Aria shook her head slowly.

"I'm fine."

A pause.

"…for now."

That answer didn't sit well with him.

But before he could press further—

Darius spoke.

"You ended it."

His voice was calm.

Measured.

But there was something underneath it now.

Something darker.

Something… impressed.

Aria didn't look away.

"Yes."

A faint smile curved his lips.

"Most don't."

Rowan stepped forward, positioning himself slightly to the side.

"Most don't try to tear people apart mentally either."

Marcus added,

"Yeah, that was very rude."

Lena shot him a look.

"Not now."

Darius ignored them all.

His focus remained on Aria.

"You're adapting faster than expected."

Aria's voice came out steady.

"I'm not adapting to you."

A pause.

"I'm stopping you."

That made his smile widen.

"Try."

The word wasn't a challenge.

It was a promise.

The tension snapped tight again.

Varkos's wolf growled low.

Ready.

Waiting.

But this time—

Darius didn't surge forward.

Didn't attack.

Instead—

He took a step back.

And that alone—

Changed everything.

Rowan frowned.

"…he's retreating?"

Alder's gaze sharpened.

"No."

A pause.

"He's deciding."

Marcus blinked.

"…that sounds worse."

It was.

Darius's eyes swept over the group.

Kael.

Rowan.

Lena.

Marcus.

Varkos.

Alder.

And then—

Back to Aria.

"You've made this more interesting than I planned."

Aria didn't respond.

But her stance didn't relax either.

"Good."

He nodded once.

Like confirming something to himself.

"Then we change the rules."

Silence.

That didn't sound good.

At all.

Kael's voice dropped.

"There are no rules."

Darius's smile sharpened.

"There are now."

And before anyone could react—

He moved.

Not toward Aria.

Not toward Kael.

But—

To the side.

Fast.

Too fast.

Rowan turned—

Too late.

A wolf from their side—

One of theirs—

Was grabbed by the throat.

Lifted off the ground.

Gasps echoed.

"HEY—!"

Marcus shouted.

"Let him go!"

Darius didn't look at him.

Didn't react.

The wolf struggled in his grip.

Choking.

Clawing.

Useless.

Aria's eyes narrowed.

"Let him go."

Darius's gaze flicked to her.

Calm.

Cold.

"Make me."

The words hit hard.

Because this wasn't random.

This wasn't chaotic.

This—

Was deliberate.

A test.

A line.

Aria stepped forward.

"No games."

Darius tilted his head slightly.

"This isn't a game."

The wolf gasped again.

Weaker now.

Fading.

Kael stepped forward.

His aura rising dangerously.

"Drop him."

Darius didn't even look at him.

"Still not talking to you."

That was it.

Kael moved—

But Aria's hand shot out.

Grabbing his arm.

Stopping him.

He froze.

Turning to her.

"What are you doing?"

Her voice was low.

Sharp.

"If you rush him, he dies."

Silence.

That was enough.

Kael's jaw clenched.

But he didn't move.

Aria stepped forward slowly.

Every movement controlled.

Measured.

Her eyes locked on Darius.

"You want to test me?"

Darius smiled faintly.

"Yes."

The honesty in that answer—

Was dangerous.

Aria didn't hesitate.

"Then test me."

A pause.

Her voice hardened.

"Not them."

The air shifted again.

Different this time.

Not explosive.

Not chaotic.

Controlled.

Focused.

Her power moved—

Not outward.

Not violently.

But precisely.

Like a thread.

Invisible.

Sharp.

It wrapped around Darius's arm.

Not to crush.

Not to break.

To control.

Darius's eyes flickered.

Interest deepening.

"…there it is."

The pressure on the wolf eased slightly.

Not released—

But lessened.

Aria took another step forward.

Her voice steady.

"Let him go."

Darius didn't move.

But his grip didn't tighten either.

He was watching.

Waiting.

Testing.

Aria's power tightened.

Just slightly.

A warning.

"You don't get to use them."

Silence.

The tension stretched thin.

Like a wire about to snap.

Then—

Slowly—

Darius released him.

The wolf dropped to the ground.

Coughing.

Gasping.

Alive.

Marcus rushed forward.

"Hey, hey—breathe!"

Lena moved beside him.

Checking.

Stabilizing.

Rowan exhaled slowly.

"…okay. Good."

But no one relaxed.

Because this—

Wasn't over.

Darius flexed his hand slightly.

Like testing the feeling that had just restrained him.

Then he looked back at Aria.

And smiled.

Not mocking.

Not amused.

Genuine.

"You learn quickly."

Aria didn't respond.

But her stance didn't change.

Didn't soften.

Darius took another step back.

Then another.

Not retreating—

Creating distance.

"This isn't your fight to win yet."

Kael's eyes darkened.

"Then leave."

Darius's gaze flicked to him briefly.

Then back to Aria.

"I will."

A pause.

"But not because you told me to."

Of course not.

Nothing about him was that simple.

He took one final step back.

The wolves behind him shifting.

Preparing.

Waiting.

"For now…"

His voice lowered.

"…we observe."

Aria's eyes narrowed.

"Observe what?"

His smile returned.

"Growth."

A pause.

His gaze darkened.

"Yours."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unsettling.

And then—

He turned.

Just like that.

No rush.

No urgency.

Walking back into the forest.

His wolves followed instantly.

Like shadows retreating into darkness.

One by one—

They disappeared.

The pressure lifted.

The air eased.

The forest—

Went still again.

But this time—

It didn't feel like peace.

It felt like a warning.

Rowan exhaled sharply.

"…I hate that guy."

Marcus nodded.

"Same."

Lena stood slowly.

"He let us go."

Alder's voice came low.

"No."

A pause.

"He chose to wait."

That was worse.

Much worse.

Kael turned to Aria.

His expression serious.

Careful.

"What did he mean?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth—

She didn't fully know.

But she felt it.

That shift.

That change.

That attention now locked onto her.

"…he's not done."

Alder nodded once.

"No."

A pause.

"He's just begun."

Silence fell again.

But this time—

No one mistook it for calm.

Because now—

They all understood something terrifying.

This wasn't just a war anymore.

It was personal.

And Aria—

Was at the center of it.
