Chapter 23 - Uneasy Thoughts

Alex remained by the fountain for several minutes after Kael disappeared into the streets of Riverwood. The water continued to flow quietly, creating a soft, steady sound that filled the empty square. Lantern light flickered gently across the stone ground, and the night air carried a cool breeze from the nearby forest. But Alex barely noticed any of it. His mind was busy replaying the conversation.

Have you ever heard of something called a system, Alex?

The question echoed in his head. He clenched his fist slightly.

"That wasn't a random guess," he muttered.

Kael had described the system far too accurately. Levels, skills, abilities—those weren't things ordinary people in this world normally talked about. Which meant one of two things.

Either Kael had somehow seen the system before… Or he knew stories about it that most people didn't.

Alex exhaled slowly.

"Either way, that's bad."

He finally pushed himself away from the fountain and began walking toward the inn. The streets of Riverwood were mostly quiet now, with only a few travelers and late-night workers still outside. A couple of adventurers laughed loudly as they stumbled out of a tavern nearby.

For them, life was simple. Take quests. Fight monsters. Earn money. But for Alex, things were becoming more complicated every day. The system made him stronger, but it also made him a potential target. If Kael already suspected something… Then others might eventually reach the same conclusion. As Alex walked, the familiar system interface suddenly appeared again.

Host: Alex VarynLevel: 6

Alex studied the screen thoughtfully. Despite everything, his growth was undeniable. Two days ago, he had been weak enough to die to a pack of wolves. Now he had defeated a Goblin Brute and completed multiple guild quests. The system was working. And it was working well. Alex rubbed his chin.

"But Kael mentioned something else…"

The last time the system appeared… entire kingdoms went to war over it.

That didn't sound like a simple legend. If the system really had that kind of history, then revealing it could create far bigger problems than he had imagined.

"Great," Alex sighed quietly.

"Just what I needed."

He turned a corner and finally reached the Silver Leaf Inn. Warm light shone through the windows, and the quiet murmur of voices drifted from inside. Alex stepped through the door. The innkeeper looked up from behind the counter.

"You're back late," she said.

"Long day," Alex replied.

"That seems to be your normal routine now."

Alex smiled slightly.

"Adventurer life."

She handed him the room key.

"Well, try not to bring monsters into town."

"I'll do my best."

Alex headed upstairs and entered his small room. The moment he closed the door, he let out a long breath. The quiet space felt peaceful compared to everything that had happened today. He removed his armor and set his dagger on the table beside the bed. Then he sat down. For a while, he simply stared at the wooden wall in front of him.

His thoughts drifted again to Kael. Something about that man felt strange. He wasn't threatening. But he was clearly watching.

Testing.

Observing.

Alex lay back on the bed.

"Guess I'll just have to be careful around him."

Still, one thing was certain. Kael knew far more than the average adventurer. And if he suspected the truth about the system… Then eventually he might start digging deeper. Alex closed his eyes. The exhaustion from the day's battles slowly caught up to him. Just before sleep took him, the system flickered again. A new message appeared briefly in the darkness.

The message vanished almost instantly. Alex never saw it. But somewhere deep within the mysterious system… Something had just begun to change.
