Lantern light flickered gently across the stone ground, and the night air carried a cool breeze from the nearby forest. But Alex barely noticed any of it. "You're back late," she said.

Alex headed upstairs and entered his small room. The moment he closed the door, he let out a long breath. The quiet space felt peaceful compared to everything that had happened today. He removed his armor and set his dagger on the table beside the bed. Then he sat down. For a while, he simply stared at the wooden wall in front of him.
His thoughts drifted again to Kael. Something about that man felt strange. He wasn't threatening. But he was clearly watching.

Alex lay back on the bed.
"Guess I'll just have to be careful around him."
