The clearing remained silent after the ogre collapsed. The enormous body lay motionless on the ground, its massive club resting beside it. The monster that had terrorized the northern forest was finally dead.
For a few seconds, no one spoke. Everyone was catching their breath. Bren wiped the blood from his sword and looked around the group.
"Well done," he said. "That could've gone a lot worse."
One of the shield warriors sat down heavily on a nearby rock.
"I thought that shockwave attack was going to break my ribs," he muttered.
The archer laughed nervously.
"At least you didn't climb on its shoulder."
Alex rubbed the back of his neck.
"Seemed like a good idea at the time."
Kael chuckled quietly.
"You were lucky."
Alex nodded.
"I know."
But inside his mind, the system interface had already appeared again.
Hidden Objective Completed
Boss Execution Achieved
Reward Granted
A new notification appeared immediately after.
New Skill Acquired
Combat Instinct — Lv.1
Effect:• Slightly increases reaction speed during combat• Detects danger within close range
Alex blinked.
"A new skill?"
The moment the notification faded, he felt a strange sensation in his mind. It was subtle. Almost like his senses had sharpened slightly. The surrounding forest suddenly felt more detailed. The movement of the wind through the leaves. The faint creaking of branches. Even the breathing of the other adventurers nearby.
Alex smiled slightly.
"That's… actually pretty useful."
Kael noticed the expression.
"You look pleased with yourself."
Alex shrugged casually.
"Just glad we survived."
Kael studied him carefully. His sharp eyes lingered for a moment longer than usual. Almost as if he suspected something. But he said nothing. Meanwhile, Bren approached the fallen ogre.
"Alright," the veteran adventurer said.
"Let's make sure we collect proof for the guild."
He knelt beside the monster and examined the body.
"For large monsters like this, the guild usually wants something specific."
One of the shield warriors asked, "The head?"
Bren shook his head.
"Too heavy."
Instead, he drew a dagger and cut a large tusk from the ogre's lower jaw. The thick tooth finally broke free with a crack.
"This will do."
He held the tusk up.
"Proof of the kill."
The archer stretched his arms.
"Forty silver coins… not bad for a morning's work."
The shield warrior laughed.
"Speak for yourself. I nearly died."
Bren stood and looked at the group.
"You all fought well."
Then his eyes landed on Alex again.
"Especially you."
Alex shrugged.
"I just took the opportunity."
Bren nodded.
"That final strike ended the fight."
The veteran adventurer smiled slightly.
"Not bad for someone who joined the guild only a few days ago."
Alex didn't know how to respond to that. Luckily, Kael stepped in.
"Talent appears in unexpected places."
Bren chuckled.
"That's true."
He placed the tusk into a large cloth bag.
"Alright. Let's head back to Riverwood."
No one argued. The group began walking back through the forest. This time, the atmosphere was much lighter. The tension from the battle had disappeared. But Alex remained thoughtful. His mind kept returning to the system reward.
A hidden objective.
A new skill.
And the system had reacted extremely quickly after he delivered the killing blow. Almost as if it had been waiting for that moment. As the group walked along the forest path, Alex quietly opened the system interface again.
Host: Alex VarynLevel: 7
Strength: 7Agility: 7Intelligence: 1Mana: 0
Skills:• Analyze Lv.1• Vital Recovery Lv.1• Combat Instinct Lv.1
Alex studied the screen. His strength had increased significantly. His agility had improved again. And now he had a third skill.
For someone who had been completely powerless just a few days ago… This progress was incredible. But something still bothered him.
That system notice from earlier.
Adaptive Protocol Initiating.
The system was changing.
Evolving.
And Alex had no idea what that meant.
As the group continued their journey back to Riverwood, Kael glanced at Alex once more.
The faint smile returned to his face. Because the more he observed Alex… The more certain he became. The strange power he had suspected before— Was definitely real.
