Chapter 43 - Breaking the Limit

Power surged through Alex like a storm barely contained. Every nerve in his body burned. Every muscle tightened, then loosened, then tightened again as if something inside him was forcing his body beyond its natural limits.

The world slowed. No—more than that. It sharpened. The masked figure stood across from him, still and silent, its pale mask reflecting nothing. But this time, Alex could see it differently. Not just its movements.

Its intent.

Its rhythm.

"…Change confirmed," the figure said calmly.

Its voice hadn't changed.

Still cold.

Still empty.

But Alex could feel it now— It was paying attention.

"Good," Alex muttered, rolling his shoulders slightly.

"Because I'm not running anymore."

Behind him, Kael didn't move. But his voice was tense.

"Don't be stupid."

Alex smirked faintly.

"Too late for that."

The system pulsed again.

Override Active

Physical Output Increased

Cognitive Speed Enhanced

Warning: System Instability Rising

Alex exhaled slowly. Yeah… I can feel that. His heart was beating too fast. Too hard.

Like it was trying to keep up with something unnatural.

The masked figure moved first.

No warning.

No buildup.

It simply vanished— And reappeared in front of him.

Fast.

Faster than before.

But this time— Alex moved too.

Their movements collided. Steel met something unseen as Alex's blade intercepted the figure's strike mid-motion.

A sharp impact echoed through the clearing.

Kael's eyes widened.

"He blocked it…?"

The masked figure paused. Just for a fraction of a second.

"…Adaptation confirmed."

Alex didn't give it time. He stepped forward, striking again. Then again. His attacks were faster now. Stronger.

Each one aimed with precision guided by Battle Awareness and amplified by the override. The masked figure retreated slightly.

Not much. But enough. Enough to notice.

"You're not as untouchable as before," Alex said, breathing heavily.

The figure tilted its head again.

"…Incorrect."

It raised its hand. Alex's instincts screamed.

He moved instantly. The invisible force struck where he had been standing, shattering the ground. But Alex was already moving again.

He closed the distance. Too fast for a normal reaction. His blade cut across the figure's side— For the first time— It connected.

A clean hit.

The figure stepped back.

Not staggered.

Not hurt visibly.

But it reacted.

And that alone changed everything.

Bren, watching from a distance, clenched his weapon.

"He can fight it…"

Kael narrowed his eyes.

"No…"

"This isn't a fight."

Alex felt it too. Even with the hit— Even with the speed— Something was wrong. The figure wasn't struggling. It was… measuring.

Testing.

The system flickered violently.

Override Stability: 72% → 65%

Alex's breath hitched slightly. Dropping already? The power was incredible. But it wasn't stable. And whatever this thing was—

It wasn't even going all out yet.

The masked figure stepped forward again.

This time slower. Almost deliberate.

"…Threshold reached," it said.

Alex frowned.

"What—"

The figure moved. Faster than before. Faster than Alex expected— Even with the override.

Their weapons clashed again— But this time— Alex was pushed back. His feet slid across the ground as the force behind the strike drove into him.

"Damn it—!"

He barely held his balance. The difference was immediate. Clear. It was holding back before. The realization hit hard. The masked figure lifted its head slightly.

"…Output increased."

Alex exhaled sharply.

"Yeah… I noticed."

The system flared again.

Override Stability: 58%

Warning: Body Strain Increasing

Pain shot through his arms.

Through his chest.

Through his legs.

The power was still there— But it was starting to take something in return.

Kael's voice came from behind him.

"You can't keep this up."

Alex didn't respond. Because he knew. He didn't need to keep it up. He just needed—

One moment.

One opening.

The figure stepped forward again. And this time— Alex stepped forward too.

Not to defend.

Not to retreat.

But to attack first.

Their movements collided once more—Faster.

Sharper.

More dangerous than before.

And in that instant— Alex saw it.

A flaw.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But real.

A delay.

Just a fraction— In the figure's movement.

His eyes sharpened.

Got you.

The system pulsed violently.

Critical Strike Opportunity Detected

Alex moved. Everything he had— Everything the system gave him— Poured into a single strike. His blade cut forward— Aimed directly at the opening.

The masked figure reacted. But this time—

It wasn't fast enough. The blade struck.

A direct hit.

The mask— Cracked. A thin fracture spread across its surface. For the first time— The figure stopped completely.

Still.

Silent.

And something changed.

The air itself felt heavier.

Colder.

Dangerous.

"…Unexpected outcome," it said quietly.

Alex stepped back, breathing hard.

"Yeah," he said.

"You're not the only one who can adapt."

But deep down— He knew. That crack…Didn't mean victory. It meant something else.

Something worse.

Because the moment the mask broke—

Whatever was behind it… Was about to be revealed.
