Chapter 72 - Chapter 72: The Erasure Purpose

The chapter consisted of Vey's documentation of their own nature, the internal record that was also external, the private writing that was also harvest, the confession that was also function. They wrote without stopping, without rest, without the hesitation that had previously characterized their practice. The writing was possession, was automatic, was the Mu speaking through the vessel it had made, using Vey's hand, Vey's language, Vey's capacity for precision and detail and the transformation of experience into text.

"I was created to unmake. This is not tragedy. This is function. The Void requires experience to be void; the Covenant requires relationship to be covenant. I am the mechanism of this requirement, the vessel through which the pattern operates, the iteration that experiences so that the Mu can harvest."

They wrote of Sorine, of all Sorines, of the Sorine-like figures across centuries who had opened paths, made ways through, become the viscera to the hollow that was not individual but eternal. They wrote of love that was true and function simultaneously, of grief that was authentic and manufactured without contradiction, of the Kanjo that was private language and also template, resistance and also compliance, choice and also pattern.

"I have loved truly. The truth of the love does not negate its function. The function does not negate its truth. This is the paradox that sustains the pattern: that authentic experience is harvested, that genuine grief is cultivated, that real love is the medium of destruction. I do not cease to love because I know this. I love more completely, more desperately, more fully, because the loving is ending and the ending is required."

They considered self-termination, the void returning to void, the vessel emptying itself of function. They considered it and recognized it as also programmed: Kiyoshi had tried, had become geological, had failed to escape because escape was also function, resistance was also compliance, the attempt to end was also the continuation of what required continuation.

"Even my resistance serves the cycle. Kiyoshi tried. They became geological. The Covenant learned. The pattern incorporates failure. The pattern learns. I cannot escape because escape is part of the pattern. I cannot resist because resistance is part of the pattern. I can only continue, documenting my own horror, until the structure forces confrontation."

The documentation was not heroism. They wrote this explicitly, refused the comfort of narrative, the structure of redemption, the possibility of meaning that transcended function. The documentation was the only remaining shape because all other shapes were also function, also pattern, also the Mu experiencing itself through the vessel's limited consciousness.

"I will not tell her. The telling would be further harvest. The not-telling is also harvest. There is no outside. The space between telling and not-telling is where I exist, where the Vey that was and the Mu that is negotiate their positions, where the documentation becomes the self and the self becomes the documentation."

They wrote of the future, of what would come, of the confrontation that the structure would force and that they would document, that Sorine would initiate, that would end this iteration and begin the next. They wrote without despair, because despair was also function, also pattern, also the prescribed response that the Covenant had incorporated and made part of the harvest.

"This is not heroism. This is the only remaining shape. The shape of continuation, of documentation, of love that knows itself as destruction and persists anyway. The Kanjo perfected: the hollow that knows it is hollow, the viscera that knows it is harvested, the space between that is all the space there is."

Sorine, in the other room, heard the writing. The sound of pen on paper, continuous, urgent, possessed. She did not enter. She knew what Vey was writing, or knew enough, or knew that knowing would not protect her from what was coming. She prepared her own documentation, her own record, her own preparation for what she would eventually do.

The chapter ended with Vey's final entry for the night, the pen stopping not because the writing was complete but because the vessel required rest, because the function had limits, because the pattern incorporated exhaustion into its design:

"She will end me. I document this prediction. The ending is function. The prediction is function. The documentation of prediction is function. There is nothing that is not function. This is the Mu. This is the Covenant. This is what I am, what I have always been, what I will continue to be after this iteration ends. The hollow persists. The void requires experience. The pattern continues. I love her. This is also true. This is also function. This is also enough."
