Chapter 16 - SURPANAKHA

Chapter 16:

Many years of exile had passed.

After spending time in Chitrakuta and visiting the hermitages of great sages, Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana eventually settled in the beautiful forest region of Panchavati on the banks of the Godavari River.

The forest was rich with life.

Towering trees stretched toward the sky.

Colorful birds filled the air with their songs.

Deer wandered peacefully through the groves.

Lakshmana had built a comfortable forest dwelling, and for a time the three exiles lived in peace.

But destiny was slowly moving toward a turning point.

Far away, in the kingdom of Lanka, ruled the mighty Ravana.

Among his relatives was his sister, Surpanakha.

Unlike her brothers, Surpanakha wandered freely through forests and wildernesses. She possessed powerful Rakshasi abilities and could change her appearance at will.

One day, while roaming through the forests of Panchavati, Surpanakha noticed something unusual.

Near a simple forest dwelling stood a handsome prince whose radiance seemed almost divine.

It was Rama.

His calm demeanor, noble appearance, and strength immediately caught her attention.

Curious, she approached.

Using her powers, she transformed herself into a beautiful woman and walked toward the prince.

Rama was seated beside Sita while Lakshmana stood nearby.

Surpanakha introduced herself and boldly spoke.

"Who are you, O handsome prince, living in this forest dressed as an ascetic?"

Rama politely replied,

"I am Rama, son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya. This is my wife Sita, and this is my brother Lakshmana."

Surpanakha's eyes remained fixed upon Rama.

Captivated by his appearance, she said,

"You are worthy of a far greater companion than this woman. Marry me, and together we shall roam the forests and rule as we please."

Rama understood her intentions.

Smiling gently, he replied,

"I am already married and devoted to my wife. But my brother Lakshmana is unmarried and standing there."

Lakshmana immediately understood Rama's playful response.

When Surpanakha approached him, Lakshmana answered with humor.

"I am merely a servant of my elder brother. Why would you choose me? You should seek Rama instead."

Confused and frustrated, Surpanakha moved back and forth between the two brothers.

Soon her admiration turned into anger.

She realized that the brothers were gently rejecting her advances.

Then her gaze fell upon Sita.

In her jealousy, Surpanakha blamed Sita for her humiliation.

Her eyes burned with rage.

Abandoning her beautiful disguise, she revealed her terrifying Rakshasi form.

Her appearance became fierce and frightening.

With a scream of fury, she rushed toward Sita.

Before she could reach her, Lakshmana stepped forward.

Determined to protect Sita, he acted swiftly.

Using his weapon, he punished Surpanakha and drove her away.

Crying out in pain and humiliation, the Rakshasi fled into the forest.

Her heart burned with vengeance.

She rushed to her brothers Khara and Dushana, powerful Rakshasa commanders who ruled parts of the Dandaka Forest under Ravana's authority.

Filled with anger, she described what had happened and demanded revenge.

Khara and Dushana immediately gathered a large force of Rakshasas and marched toward Panchavati.

They intended to destroy Rama and Lakshmana.

But they did not understand whom they were facing.

The conflict that began with Surpanakha's jealousy would soon grow into a chain of events that would shake the world.

Her desire for revenge would eventually reach the ears of Ravana himself.

And from that moment onward, the path toward the abduction of Sita and the great war of Lanka would begin.

The peaceful days of Panchavati were coming to an end.

A storm was approaching.

And destiny had chosen Surpanakha to set it in motion.
