Chapter 12 - Kyle's possessiveness shows up

The shift didn't go unnoticed.

Not by Rowan.

Not by Azriel.

And definitely not by Kyle.

From the moment they left the corridor, something had changed. The air between them was thicker, heavier, filled with something unspoken—but loud enough that none of them could ignore it.

Kyle had felt it instantly.

The bond had told him.

Something had happened.

And he didn't like it.

---

They moved through the fortress in silence, but Kyle stayed closer than before. Not just near Lyra—

Right beside her.

Every step she took, he matched.

Every glance she made, he noticed.

Until finally—

He stopped.

"Lyra."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

She turned to him, slightly startled. "What is it?"

Kyle's silver eyes flicked briefly toward Azriel.

Then back to her.

"Walk with me."

It wasn't a suggestion.

Before she could respond, he gently—but firmly—took her hand and led her down a different corridor.

Away from the others.

Lyra's heart skipped.

"Kyle—"

"We need to talk."

His tone left no room for argument.

---

The corridor was quieter here.

Empty.

Still.

Kyle didn't stop until they reached a secluded alcove, half-shadowed by stone pillars. Only then did he turn to face her.

But he didn't let go of her hand.

If anything—

His grip tightened.

"Did something happen?" he asked.

Direct.

Sharp.

Lyra blinked. "What?"

Kyle stepped closer.

Slow.

Measured.

But there was tension in every movement.

"With Azriel."

The words landed between them.

Heavy.

Lyra's breath caught.

"I—no, it wasn't—"

"Don't lie to me."

His voice wasn't loud.

But it was firm.

And something in it—

Something raw—

made her pause.

Kyle exhaled slowly, dragging a hand through his hair before looking back at her.

"I felt it," he said quietly. "The bond doesn't lie."

Lyra swallowed.

Her heart started racing again.

"It wasn't like that," she said softly.

Kyle's eyes darkened slightly.

"Then what was it like?"

He stepped closer again.

Now there was barely any space between them.

Lyra's back brushed lightly against the cold stone behind her.

"I don't know," she admitted.

And that—

That seemed to hit him harder than anything else.

Kyle went still.

Completely still.

Then—

His free hand moved.

Bracing against the wall beside her.

Trapping her in place.

Not forcefully.

But undeniably.

His presence surrounded her.

Warm.

Intense.

Overwhelming.

"You don't know," he repeated quietly.

His gaze dropped briefly—to her lips—before returning to her eyes.

The bond surged.

Stronger.

Hotter.

Lyra's breath hitched.

"Kyle…"

His name came out softer than she intended.

He noticed.

Of course he did.

His jaw tightened slightly.

"You don't understand what this does," he said, his voice lower now. "Watching you with them. Feeling it."

His hand tightened around hers.

Not hurting.

But grounding.

Claiming.

"It's not just a bond for me, Lyra."

Her heart pounded.

"Then what is it?" she whispered.

Kyle didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He leaned in.

Closer.

Not touching.

But close enough that she could feel his breath.

"It's you," he said finally.

The words were quiet.

But they carried weight.

Possession.

Emotion.

Truth.

Lyra's chest tightened.

The bond pulsed wildly now, reacting to both of them.

Her fingers tightened instinctively around his.

"I'm not something you can own," she said softly.

Kyle's expression didn't harden.

If anything—

It deepened.

"I know," he said.

And somehow—

That made it worse.

"Doesn't mean I won't want to."

The honesty in his voice made her breath catch.

His hand lifted slightly—

Hovering near her face.

But unlike Azriel—

Kyle didn't hesitate.

His fingers brushed against her cheek, firm but careful, tilting her face slightly toward him.

"Look at me," he murmured.

She already was.

But now—

She couldn't look away.

"You think I don't see it?" he continued quietly. "The way they look at you. The way you look back."

Lyra's heart raced faster.

"I'm trying to give you space," he said. "Trying to do this the right way."

A pause.

His thumb brushed lightly against her cheek.

"But I'm not as patient as they are."

The air between them shifted.

Charged.

Dangerous.

Real.

"And if it comes down to it…" Kyle added, his voice dropping further, "I won't lose you."

The words weren't a threat.

They were a promise.

Footsteps echoed faintly in the distance.

Reality creeping back in.

Kyle exhaled slowly, pulling back just enough to break the intensity—but not enough to fully step away.

His hand lingered against hers for a second longer.

Then—

He let go.

"Come on," he said, his tone returning to something steadier. "We shouldn't keep them waiting."

But as they walked back—

Lyra couldn't ignore the way her heart was still racing.

Or the way the bond felt now.

Different.

Stronger.

More tangled.

Because this wasn't just connection anymore.

It was emotion.

And Kyle—

Kyle wasn't hiding his.
