Chapter Thirty-Nine: Golden Light and Sacred Ground
The morning they left Kashmir, Keiran cried.
"No! Want more snow! Want stay!"
Jay held him close, letting him sob into her shoulder. "I know, baby. I know. But there's more to see. More adventures."
"Snow best!"
"Snow is amazing. But wait until you see where we're going next."
"Where?"
"Punjab. The Golden Temple. It's like... like a palace made of gold."
Keiran's tears stopped. "Gold? Real gold?"
"Real gold."
He looked at Rex. Rex looked back.
"Rex says okay. We go see gold."
---
The flight to Amritsar was short.
Mountains gave way to plains, green and gold under the winter sun. Keiran pressed to the window, watching the transformation.
"Mamma, where snow go?"
"No snow here, baby. Different kind of beautiful."
"Rex miss snow."
"Rex can miss snow and still enjoy gold."
Keiran nodded wisely. "Rex says true."
---
They landed in Amritsar to warmer air—not hot, but definitely not cold. The energy felt different too. Calmer, perhaps. More grounded.
Percy was already researching. "Okay, so the Golden Temple is the holiest site for Sikhs. Everyone is welcome. They have free food for everyone—like, thousands of people every day."
C.N. nodded. "The langar. It's incredible. One of the largest free kitchens in the world."
"We're eating there?"
"If you want. Everyone eats together, no matter who you are."
Percy's eyes lit up. "I love places where everyone eats together!"
"You love any place with food."
"ALSO TRUE!"
---
The Golden Temple complex rose before them like a dream.
White marble. Golden dome. Water surrounding it all, reflecting the light. People moved slowly, reverently, many with heads covered, feet bare.
Jay felt her breath catch.
"Oh," she whispered. "Oh, it's beautiful."
Keifer squeezed her hand. "Yeah. It really is."
Keiran stared, eyes wide. "Mamma, that's the gold?"
"That's the gold, baby."
"Rex says WOW."
"Rex is right."
---
They removed their shoes, covered their heads as required, and walked toward the temple.
The marble was warm under their feet—heated by the sun, by the thousands of pilgrims who'd walked here before. The water of the sarovar sparkled, calm and holy.
Percy was quiet.
Actually, genuinely quiet.
Honey glanced at him. "Babe? You okay?"
"Yeah." His voice was soft. "Just... taking it in."
C.N. wasn't on his phone. Wasn't researching. Just walking, experiencing.
Mica held Calix's hand, uncharacteristically still.
Felix and Bridget walked close, not speaking.
Even Yuri had his camera down, just looking.
---
They reached the causeway leading to the Harmandir Sahib—the Golden Temple itself.
The gold gleamed in the afternoon light, impossibly bright, impossibly beautiful. Devotees moved around them, some praying, some simply sitting in the peace of it all.
Keiran tugged Jay's hand. "Mamma, can we go in?"
"We have to wait in line, baby. Everyone waits together."
"Rex okay with waiting."
"Rex is very patient."
"Rex best."
---
They waited in line, surrounded by people from everywhere—India, obviously, but also other countries, other cultures, all drawn to this place.
A family ahead of them smiled at Keiran. A grandmother reached out, gently touching his cheek, murmuring a blessing in Punjabi.
Keiran looked at Jay. "Mamma, what she say?"
"I think she blessed you, baby."
"Rex too?"
Jay smiled at the grandmother, gesturing to Rex. The woman laughed, touched Rex's head gently, said another blessing.
Keiran beamed. "Rex blessed! Rex holy now!"
Percy snorted. "Holy dinosaur. That's a first."
"Holy Rex!"
---
Inside the temple, the gold was overwhelming.
Not gaudy—sacred. The walls, the ceilings, everything inlaid with precious metals and stones. The sound of kirtan—devotional music—filled the space, soft and beautiful.
Jay felt tears prick her eyes.
Keifer pulled her close. "Okay?"
"More than okay." She wiped her eyes. "It's just... so beautiful. So peaceful."
"Yeah." He kissed her temple. "It is."
Keiran was staring up, mouth open. "Mamma, so much gold."
"Lots of gold, baby."
"Rex wants live here."
"Rex might have to wait in line for that."
---
They moved through the temple slowly, each in their own space.
Aries and Ella stood together, eyes closed, absorbing the peace.
Percy and Honey sat on the marble, just watching the water.
C.N. and Rakii found a quiet corner, not taking photos, just being.
David and Freya walked hand in hand, occasionally exchanging glances.
Mica leaned against Calix, for once not bouncing with energy.
Felix and Bridget sat close, not speaking, not needing to.
Yuri had his camera, but he wasn't filming. Just holding it, like a talisman.
---
After the temple, they visited the langar hall.
Massive. Organized chaos. Hundreds of people sitting on the floor in long rows, eating together.
Percy was thrilled. "WE EAT ON FLOOR! WITH EVERYONE! THIS IS AMAZING!"
"Percy, inside voice."
"THIS IS MY INSIDE VOICE!"
"God help us."
They sat cross-legged on the floor—not easy for everyone. Felix managed gracefully. Percy flopped. C.N. sat with perfect posture.
Volunteers moved through the rows, serving food—dal, rice, roti, vegetables, and the most incredible sweet kheer.
Keiran tried to eat with his hands like everyone else and ended up with rice everywhere.
"Rex likes this!"
"Rex has food on his face."
"Rex has food EVERYWHERE!"
---
After the langar, they walked to Jallianwala Bagh.
The garden was beautiful now—green grass, tall trees, peaceful paths. But everyone knew what had happened here. Everyone felt the weight.
The memorial stood in the center—a simple flame, surrounded by names. The walls still bore bullet holes from 1919, when British troops had fired on unarmed civilians.
The group fell silent.
Even Percy.
Even Keiran, sensing the gravity, held Jay's hand tightly.
Jay read the inscription. Felt tears come again.
Keifer wrapped his arm around her. "It's important to remember."
"Yes." Her voice was rough. "It is."
They walked through the garden slowly, reading, remembering, honoring.
C.N. stood before the memorial for a long time, head bowed.
Rakii didn't take a single photo.
Felix and Bridget held hands, not speaking.
Percy was utterly still, Honey's hand in his.
---
Keiran tugged Jay's sleeve. "Mamma, what happened here?"
Jay knelt beside him. "A long time ago, baby, something very sad happened. Many people died. This garden remembers them."
"Oh." He looked at the memorial. "Rex says we should be quiet and respect."
"Rex is very right."
Keiran nodded solemnly. "Rex knows things."
---
They left Jallianwala Bagh in silence.
No one spoke for a long time.
Finally, Percy broke the quiet. "That was... heavy."
"Yeah," C.N. agreed. "But important."
"We should remember. All of us should remember."
Jay nodded. "That's why we came."
---
The evening was lighter.
They explored the markets near the temple—colorful bangles, phulkari embroidery, the famous Amritsari jalebis (which Percy inhaled).
"THESE ARE THE BEST THING I'VE EVER EATEN!"
"You said that in Kashmir."
"KASHMIR WAS THEN! THIS IS NOW!"
"Consistency remains elusive."
"CONSISTENCY IS OVERRATED!"
Keiran got his face painted with a tiny tiger. Rex got a matching mark (drawn on with a marker, very carefully).
"Rex tiger now!"
"Fierce tiger."
"Rex FEARLESS!"
---
They ate dinner at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the Golden Temple.
The temple glowed in the darkness—lit from within, reflected in the water, golden and sacred and utterly beautiful.
Everyone was quiet, just watching.
Keiran fell asleep on Jay's lap, Rex clutched tightly.
Percy leaned against Honey. "Today was... a lot."
"In a good way?"
"In every way." He kissed her forehead. "Thanks for being here with me."
"Where else would I be?"
---
Jay looked at Keifer across the table. He was watching the temple, expression soft.
"Hey."
He turned. "Hey."
"Today was special."
"The most special." He reached for her hand. "Every day with you is special."
"Even the chaotic ones?"
"Especially the chaotic ones."
She smiled. "I love you."
"I love you too." He lifted her hand, kissed it. "More than gold."
"More than temples?"
"More than everything."
---
They flew back to Delhi that night.
Keiran slept through most of it, exhausted by the day's emotions and experiences.
Percy slept too, head on Honey's shoulder.
C.N. stared out the window, thinking.
Yuri reviewed his footage, but quietly, not sharing.
Felix and Bridget held hands in the dark.
And Jay leaned against Keifer, watching the lights below.
"Home tomorrow?"
"Home tomorrow." He kissed her hair. "But we'll come back. All of us. Someday."
"Someday," she agreed.
Keiran stirred, murmured, "Rex says yes."
Jay laughed softly. "Rex approves."
"Rex always approves."
