Chapter Forty-Five: The Cave of Timelessness
The morning after Chittorgarh, the group woke with a strange sense of anticipation.
Not the chaotic energy of early days. Not the heavy reverence of Kedarnath. Something else—a quiet awareness that today would be different.
Percy was actually ready before everyone else. "Come ON! We're going to see something AMAZING!"
Honey blinked at him. "Who are you and what have you done with Percy?"
"I'm ENLIGHTENED Percy! There's a difference!"
C.N. emerged from his room, also unusually eager. "I've been reading about this temple all night. The Kedareshwara Cave Temple. It's ancient. Incredible."
"NERD!"
"YOU'RE ALSO EXCITED!"
"BUT I'M EXCITED IN A COOL WAY!"
"There's no difference."
"THERE'S ALWAYS A DIFFERENCE!"
---
The drive took them through countryside that felt timeless.
Villages, fields, rivers. People living much as they had for centuries. The same sun, the same earth, the same cycle of life.
Keiran pressed to the window. "Mamma, where we going?"
"To a very old temple, baby. A cave temple."
"Cave? Like dark cave?"
"Maybe a little dark. But special. Very special."
"Rex not scared of dark."
"Rex is very brave."
---
They arrived at the temple complex in the late morning.
It wasn't grand like the Golden Temple. Not massive like Chittorgarh. But something about it stopped them at the entrance.
Rock. Ancient rock, carved by hand centuries ago. An opening in the hillside that led into darkness. And an energy that felt... patient. Waiting.
A priest met them—old, with kind eyes and a gentle smile.
"Welcome," he said. "You have come to the Kedareshwara Cave Temple. The cave where time stands still."
Percy shivered. "Time stands still?"
"So they say. Inside, past and present merge. The veil between worlds is thin."
C.N. leaned forward. "Is that literal or metaphorical?"
The priest smiled. "You will find out for yourselves."
---
They removed their shoes at the entrance. The stone was cool under their feet.
The cave opening loomed before them—dark, ancient, inviting.
Keiran held Jay's hand tightly. "Mamma, it's dark in there."
"I know, baby. But we'll go together. All of us."
"Rex ready."
"Good. Rex leads."
They entered.
---
The cave swallowed them.
Darkness at first—absolute, complete. Then slowly, their eyes adjusted. Flickering oil lamps revealed ancient stone walls. Carvings emerged from the shadows—Shiva in his many forms, goddesses, mythological scenes.
The air was cool, still, heavy with centuries of devotion.
Percy whispered—actually whispered. "It's like... another world."
"It is," C.N. whispered back. "Another time."
The passage opened into a larger chamber.
And there, at the center, stood the lingam.
Ancient. Worn by centuries of offerings. Surrounded by flickering flames and fresh flowers.
A second priest sat nearby, chanting softly.
---
The group spread out, each finding their own space.
Jay stood with Keifer, Keiran between them. The chanting wrapped around them like a blanket.
"I feel it," Jay whispered. "The timelessness."
"Me too." Keifer's voice was rough. "Like everything outside just... stopped."
Keiran looked up. "Mamma, Shiva here?"
"Here, baby. In this form. In this place."
"Rex feels him."
"Rex is special."
---
Percy stood before the lingam, eyes closed.
Honey watched him, curious. After a long moment, he opened his eyes.
"What did you feel?" she asked softly.
"I don't know how to explain. Like... like everything I've ever worried about is small. Like time doesn't matter. Like only love matters."
She kissed his cheek. "That's beautiful."
"I'm deep today."
"You're always deep. You just hide it well."
---
C.N. moved through the cave slowly, examining the carvings.
Rakii followed, but didn't photograph. Just looked.
"The craftsmanship," C.N. murmured. "Centuries old. And still here. Still见证ing."
"Witnessing," Rakii corrected softly.
"见证ing works too. In Chinese. Same meaning."
She smiled. "Sometimes you're almost romantic."
"Don't tell anyone."
---
Felix and Bridget found a small side chamber with a carving of Parvati.
"She's beautiful," Bridget whispered.
"Shiva's consort," Felix said. "The divine feminine. The mother goddess."
"You know a lot."
"I read. Before the trip. Wanted to understand."
She leaned against him. "You're sweet."
"Just interested."
"Interested is sweet."
---
Mica and Calix sat on a low stone ledge, just being.
For once, Mica wasn't bouncing. Wasn't talking. Just... present.
Calix held her hand. "You okay?"
"Yeah. Just... taking it in."
"That's new."
"India changed me. This whole trip changed me."
"Good change?"
"The best."
---
David and Freya explored together, finding carvings and marveling.
"Look at this one! Multiple arms!"
"Shiva as Nataraja. Lord of the dance."
"How do you know that?"
"I read the brochure."
"There's a brochure?"
"In the car. You were sleeping."
David laughed. "I love you."
"I love you too. Now look at this one."
---
Aries and Ella stood apart, wrapped in each other.
"I'm glad we came," Ella murmured.
"Me too." He kissed her hair. "All of it. Every chaotic moment."
"Even Percy?"
"Especially Percy. He's grown."
"He has. We all have."
---
Yuri had his camera, but he wasn't filming.
Just holding it. Like a talisman. Like something to ground him.
Rakii noticed. "Not filming?"
"Not today. Some things are too... too."
"Too what?"
"Too real for recording." He looked at her. "Does that make sense?"
"Perfect sense."
---
The priest who had greeted them appeared again.
"Now," he said softly, "you will experience something special."
He led them deeper into the cave—to a chamber they hadn't seen.
At its center, a small pool of water. Still as glass. Dark as night.
"This is the timeless pool," the priest said. "Look into it. See what you see."
One by one, they approached.
---
Percy went first.
He peered into the darkness. His reflection stared back. But then—something else. Movement. Shapes.
"What is that?"
"Different things to different people. The past. The future. What might have been. What could be."
Percy stared for a long moment. Then he stepped back, eyes wet.
Honey took his hand. "What did you see?"
"Us. Old. Together. Happy." He pulled her close. "That's all I want."
---
C.N. approached skeptically.
He looked. Frowned. Looked again.
His face changed. Softened.
Rakii touched his arm. "What?"
"My parents. Before they passed. Together. Smiling at me." His voice cracked. "They looked happy."
"Maybe they are. Wherever they are."
He nodded slowly. "Yeah. Maybe."
---
Mica looked and saw herself, older, with children.
Calix looked and saw them, still together, still laughing.
David saw adventure. Freya saw peace.
Felix saw Bridget, always Bridget.
Bridget saw Felix, always Felix.
Aries saw his family—all of them, together, safe.
Ella saw the same.
Yuri saw himself, finally at peace.
Rakii saw photographs she hadn't taken yet—beautiful ones, meaningful ones.
---
Keiran tugged Jay's hand. "Mamma, can I see?"
"Of course, baby."
She lifted him. He peered into the pool.
His eyes widened. "Mamma! I see us! All of us! At home! Eating pancakes! Rex too!"
"That's beautiful, baby."
"And I see something else."
"What?"
"Krishna. And Shiva. And the queens. All together. Smiling at us."
Jay's tears fell. "They are, baby. They are."
---
Jay looked last.
Into the pool. Into darkness.
And she saw—her parents. Smiling. Proud.
"Jay," they seemed to say. "Our brave girl. Look at you. Look at the family you've built. We're so proud."
She sobbed, Keifer holding her tight.
"What did you see?" he whispered.
"Everything. Everyone. All of it."
---
They left the cave changed.
The sun outside seemed brighter. The air sweeter. The world more precious.
Percy spoke for all of them. "That was... I don't have words."
"Sometimes words aren't needed," C.N. said softly.
"Yeah. But sometimes they are." He looked around. "I love you guys. All of you. Even when you're annoying."
"Even when YOU'RE annoying," C.N. countered.
"Especially then."
They laughed. The sound echoed off the ancient rocks.
---
On the drive back, Keiran fell asleep, Rex clutched tightly.
Jay leaned against Keifer. "Today was perfect."
"The most perfect."
"I'm glad we came. To India. To all of it."
"Me too." He kissed her hair. "Best decision I ever made."
"What decision?"
"Letting you faint on that sidewalk."
She laughed. "I didn't LET myself faint."
"You did it perfectly."
"Shut up."
"Make me."
She kissed him. Keiran slept on. The world rolled by.
Somewhere behind them, the cave stood silent.
Waiting for the next pilgrims.
Waiting for the next timeless moments.
