Chapter Seventy-Eight: The Confession That Broke Through
The morning after the fight, the mansion was unnaturally quiet.
No laughter from Akshi and Chethan's room. No early morning chaos from Keiran. No clattering of dishes in the kitchen.
Just silence.
Heavy, suffocating silence.
---
Jay woke first, instinctively reaching for Keifer.
"Something's wrong," she whispered.
He pulled her closer. "I know."
"What do we do?"
"We wait. We watch. We're here."
She nodded against his chest, but her heart ached.
---
They came down to breakfast one by one.
Akshi first, eyes red, Chethan right behind her, holding her hand.
Keigan next, sensing the tension, grabbing food and retreating to his room.
Keiran, oblivious, bounced in with Rex and Ganesha. "MUMMY! PAPPA! Where is everyone?"
"Coming soon, baby."
"Where's Auntie Shreya? And Uncle Mithun?"
Jay exchanged a look with Keifer. "They're... resting."
---
Shreya appeared last.
She walked into the kitchen, grabbed a cup of coffee, and sat at the far end of the table.
Didn't look at anyone.
Didn't speak.
Just stared at her cup.
Akshi opened her mouth to say something. Chethan squeezed her hand. She closed it.
---
Mithun didn't come down.
His door remained closed.
Shreya didn't ask about him.
Didn't look toward his room.
Didn't mention his name.
---
The day passed in painful silence.
Shreya stayed in her room mostly. When she came out for water or food, she moved quickly, quietly, avoiding any space where she might run into him.
Akshi tried to talk to her.
"Shreya, please—"
"I'm fine, Akshi."
"You're NOT fine."
"I said I'm fine."
She closed the door.
Akshi stood there, helpless.
---
Chethan found Mithun in the garden.
Sitting alone. Staring at nothing.
"Bro."
No response.
"Bro, talk to me."
Mithun's voice was flat. "She won't even look at me."
"She's scared."
"Scared of what? Of telling me the truth? Of saying she doesn't feel the same? I could handle that. I CAN'T handle this—this nothing."
Chethan sat beside him. "Give her time."
"For what? To decide if I'm worth a conversation?"
---
Three days passed.
Three days of avoidance.
Shreya timing her movements to avoid Mithun's schedule.
Mithun staying in his room, coming out only when he knew she wouldn't be around.
The tension was unbearable.
Akshi was losing her mind. "THIS IS RIDICULOUS! They're both miserable! Why won't they just TALK?"
Chethan held her. "Because they're scared. Because it's complicated."
"I hate complicated."
"I know."
---
On the fourth day, something snapped.
Mithun had waited. Given her space. Respected her silence.
But four days of nothing—four days of watching her slip away like smoke—was more than he could take.
He saw her in the hallway.
She was heading toward her room, as always. Avoiding him. Avoiding everything.
He moved.
---
She felt him before she saw him.
His hand closed around her wrist.
Not hard. Not painful. But firm. Unavoidable.
She stopped.
"Shreya."
She didn't turn.
"Look at me."
She couldn't.
He stepped around her, forcing her to face him.
"LOOK AT ME."
She raised her eyes.
They were red. Swollen. She'd been crying for days.
His heart shattered.
"Why are you doing this?" His voice was raw. Broken. "Why are you avoiding me like I'm nothing? Like what I said meant nothing?"
Tears spilled down her cheeks.
"I told you I loved you." His voice cracked. "I poured my heart out. And you walked away. You didn't say a word. You just—walked. And now you won't even look at me."
She shook her head, trying to pull away.
He held firm.
"I need to know, Shreya. Do you feel anything? Anything at all? Because I can't keep doing this. I can't keep living in the same house with you, watching you disappear every time I come near, not knowing if I've lost my best friend forever."
She couldn't hold it anymore.
The dam broke.
"BECAUSE I LOVE YOU!"
---
The words echoed in the hallway.
Mithun froze.
Shreya stood there, shaking, crying, utterly undone.
"BECAUSE I LOVE YOU, MIT HUN! I'VE LOVED YOU FOR YEARS! AND I WAS SO SCARED OF RUINING EVERYTHING THAT I RAN! BECAUSE WHAT IF YOU DIDN'T FEEL THE SAME? WHAT IF I SAID IT AND YOU REALIZED YOU MADE A MISTAKE? WHAT IF I LOSE YOU FOREVER?"
She pulled her wrist free.
And ran.
Into her room.
Door slamming.
Lock clicking.
---
Mithun stood in the hallway.
Stunned.
She loved him.
She loved him.
She LOVED him.
---
He moved to her door.
Knocked.
"Shreya. Please."
No response.
"Shreya, open the door."
Nothing.
"I heard you. I heard everything. Please. Just let me see you."
Silence.
He leaned his forehead against the wood.
"I've loved you for years. YEARS. And I thought—I thought you'd never feel the same. But you do. You actually love me. Please. Open the door."
From inside, he heard her crying.
"Please, Shreya. I'm not going anywhere. I've been here for years. I'll be here for years more. Just—please don't shut me out."
---
Minutes passed.
Then—the lock clicked.
The door opened a crack.
Her face appeared. Red. Wet. Broken.
He pushed the door gently open.
And pulled her into his arms.
---
She collapsed against him.
Crying.
Loudly.
Ugly.
All the fear, all the years, all the running—it poured out of her in great, heaving sobs.
He held her tight. Rocked her gently.
"Shh. I'm here. I'm right here."
"I'm sorry—I'm so sorry—"
"No apologies. Not for this."
"I was so scared—"
"I know."
"I thought I'd lose you—"
"You won't. Ever."
---
She cried.
And cried.
And cried.
Her body shook with the force of it.
Then—
She went limp in his arms.
---
Mithun froze.
"Shreya?"
No response.
"SHREYA!"
---
Keigan was passing by the hallway when he heard the scream.
He ran to the open door.
Saw Mithun on the floor, Shreya unconscious in his arms.
His face went white.
He pulled out his phone.
Opened the group chat.
Keigan: EMERGENCY. EVERYONE. MANSION. NOW. SHREYA COLLAPSED.
---
Within minutes, the mansion exploded.
Percy and Honey arrived first, Percy's face pale for once.
Aries and Ella right behind them.
C.N. and Rakii, C.N. already calculating, Rakii already photographing but hands shaking.
Felix and Bridget, Felix carrying Bridget's bag with emergency supplies.
David and Freya, David uncharacteristically quiet.
Calix and Mica, Mica not bouncing for once.
Yuri, camera in hand but not filming—just standing, watching, waiting.
Jay and Keifer were already there, Keifer on the phone with a doctor.
Akshi and Chethan burst through, Akshi screaming, Chethan holding her back.
---
"What happened?" Percy demanded.
Mithun looked up, face destroyed. "She was crying—she was in my arms—and then she just—she just collapsed."
Jay knelt beside them. "Lay her flat. Elevate her feet."
Mithun followed instructions, never letting go of her hand.
"She's breathing," Jay confirmed. "Pulse is there. I think it's just—too much emotion. Her body shut down."
"How long?" Aries asked.
"Few minutes. Maybe more."
---
They waited.
The room was full but silent.
Everyone watching.
Mithun never let go of her hand.
"Please wake up," he whispered. "Please. I can't do this without you."
Percy put a hand on his shoulder. "She will, bro. She's strong."
"She's the strongest person I know," Akshi added, voice breaking.
"She's fought through everything," Chethan said. "She'll fight through this."
Minutes passed.
Ten.
Twenty.
Twenty-five.
---
Then—a flutter.
Her fingers moved.
Mithun leaned closer. "Shreya?"
Her eyes opened slowly.
Confusion first. Then memory. Then—fear.
"Mithun—"
"I'm here." He squeezed her hand. "I'm right here."
She looked around. Saw everyone. "Why is everyone—"
"You collapsed. Scared us all."
"I'm sorry—"
"Don't apologize."
She tried to sit up. He helped her.
And then—
He pulled her into his arms.
Held her tight.
So tight.
Like he'd never let go.
---
She clung to him, crying again—but quieter now. Softer.
"I love you," she whispered. "I love you so much."
"I love you too." His voice broke. "I've always loved you."
"I know. I know now."
"No more running?"
"No more running."
He pulled back slightly. Looked at her.
Red eyes. Wet cheeks. Swollen face.
Beautiful.
He cupped her face gently.
And kissed her.
---
Soft at first. Tender.
Then deeper.
Years of waiting. Years of wanting. Years of fear and love and longing—all of it poured into that single kiss.
She kissed him back with everything she had.
When they finally broke apart, foreheads together, breathing hard, the room erupted.
Percy was crying. "THEY KISSED! FINALLY!"
Honey hugged him. "It's about time."
Akshi was sobbing into Chethan's shoulder. "She's okay. She's okay."
Chethan held her tight. "I know."
C.N. actually smiled. "Finally. The probability of this happening was 87% but it took longer than expected."
Rakii snapped a photo. "For the album."
Felix and Bridget held each other, smiling.
David cheered. Freya laughed.
Calix held Mica, who was crying happy tears.
Yuri was filming now, tears streaming down his own face. "Best moment. Best moment ever."
Jay leaned against Keifer. "Another one."
"Another one."
"Our family keeps growing."
"The best kind of growing."
Keiran ran in, Rex in hand. "AUNTIE SHREYA! UNCLE MITHUN! You're okay! Rex is happy!"
Rex and Ganesha seemed genuinely thrilled.
Keigan leaned against the doorframe, smiling. "Finally. Took them long enough."
---
Shreya looked at Mithun.
Mithun looked at her.
They smiled.
Years of waiting.
Finally over.
Finally beginning.
