Chapter Eighty-Two: The Silence That Followed
The morning of the check-up started like any other.
Jay woke up in Keifer's arms, one hand resting on her still-small belly. She'd been feeling different lately. Tired. Heavy. But the doctor said that was normal.
"Morning," Keifer murmured.
"Morning."
"Excited to see the baby?"
"Terrified and excited. Same thing."
He kissed her forehead. "It'll be fine. Baby's perfect. You're perfect."
She smiled. "You're biased."
"Your biased."
---
Shreya and Akshi were in the kitchen when they came down.
Akshi immediately jumped up. "TODAY'S THE DAY! WE GET TO SEE BABY PICTURES!"
Shreya smiled. "Ultrasound pictures. Not baby pictures yet."
"SAME THING!"
Chethan appeared behind Akshi. "She's been excited since 5 AM."
"5 AM IS PRIME EXCITEMENT TIME!"
Mithun sat calmly, reading. "Good luck today. Let us know how it goes."
Keiran ran in, Rex in hand. "MUMMY! Are you seeing the baby today?"
"Yes, baby. We'll get pictures."
"Rex wants to see!"
"Rex will see when we get back."
---
They drove to the clinic together.
Jay held Keifer's hand the whole way.
"I'm nervous," she admitted.
"Me too. But whatever happens, we're together."
"Together."
They walked in holding hands.
---
The ultrasound room was dim. Quiet.
Jay lay on the table, cold gel on her stomach.
The technician moved the wand.
Frowned.
Moved it again.
Frowned deeper.
Keifer noticed. "Is something wrong?"
The technician didn't answer. "I need to get the doctor."
She left.
Jay looked at Keifer. "Keif—"
"I'm sure it's fine. Probably just needs a better angle."
But his voice shook.
---
The doctor came in.
An older woman. Kind eyes. Sad eyes.
She looked at the screen. Then at them.
"I'm so sorry."
Jay's world stopped.
"The baby... there's no heartbeat. It looks like the pregnancy stopped developing about a week ago."
Silence.
Absolute, crushing silence.
Jay couldn't breathe.
Keifer couldn't move.
"I'm so sorry," the doctor said again. "There's nothing you did wrong. These things happen. It's not your fault."
---
Jay heard the words.
But they didn't make sense.
How could the baby be gone?
She'd felt fine. Tired, but fine.
The baby was there. Growing. Perfect.
Wasn't it?
"No," she whispered. "No, that's not—there must be a mistake."
The doctor's eyes were so kind. So sad. "I wish there was. I'm so sorry."
Jay started shaking.
Keifer pulled her into his arms.
She didn't cry.
Couldn't.
Just shook.
---
They don't remember the drive home.
Don't remember leaving the clinic.
Don't remember walking through the door.
But they remember the faces.
Akshi, waiting eagerly. "Where are the pictures? Let me see!"
Shreya, reading on the couch, looking up with a smile.
Mithun, calm as always, setting down his book.
Chethan, coming in from the kitchen.
Keiran, playing with Rex and Ganesha.
All of them waiting. Expecting. Happy.
---
And then they saw Jay's face.
Saw Keifer's face.
Akshi's smile died. "What? What happened?"
Jay couldn't speak.
Keifer couldn't either.
Shreya stood slowly. "Jay?"
Jay looked at her.
And the dam broke.
---
She collapsed into Shreya's arms.
Sobbing.
Loudly.
Ugly.
All the grief she couldn't feel at the clinic pouring out in waves.
Shreya held her, tears streaming down her own face, even though she didn't know why yet.
Akshi grabbed Chethan's arm. "What's happening? What's wrong?"
Mithun's face went pale. He knew. Somehow, he knew.
Keifer's voice, when it came, was broken. "The baby. It's gone. Stopped developing a week ago."
---
The room shattered.
Akshi screamed.
Not words. Just sound. Pure grief.
Chethan caught her as her legs gave out.
Shreya held Jay tighter, sobbing into her hair.
Mithun stood frozen, tears streaming down his face.
Keiran, too young to understand, tugged Keifer's sleeve. "Pappa? Where's the baby? Where's my brother or sister?"
Keifer dropped to his knees. Pulled Keiran close.
"Buddy... the baby... the baby couldn't stay. It had to go to heaven."
"Like the stars?"
"Like the stars."
Keiran hugged him tight. "Rex is sad too."
---
Minutes passed.
Hours.
Time didn't exist.
Akshi was the loudest.
Her sobs echoed through the mansion.
"My niece or nephew," she cried. "My baby. I was going to be an aunt. I was going to—" She couldn't finish.
Chethan held her, crying himself.
Shreya hadn't let go of Jay.
Hadn't stopped crying.
Mithun sat beside them, one hand on Shreya's back, tears silent but constant.
---
Jay finally spoke.
Her voice was hollow. "I didn't know. I didn't feel anything wrong. I was tired, but that's normal. How could I not know?"
"It's not your fault," Shreya whispered. "It's not your fault."
"It feels like my fault."
"It's not. It's not. It's not."
---
Akshi crawled over. Joined the huddle.
The four of them—Jay, Shreya, Akshi—wrapped around each other.
Mithun and Chethan hovered close, holding their women, grieving with them.
Keifer sat apart, Keiran in his lap, watching his wife fall apart.
His heart was shattered too.
But he had to be strong.
For her.
For Keiran.
For all of them.
---
The news spread.
Percy arrived within an hour, face white, no jokes.
Honey held his hand tightly.
Aries and Ella came, silent and solemn.
C.N. and Rakii, C.N. for once without words, Rakii without her camera.
David and Freya, David quiet, Freya already crying.
Felix and Bridget, holding each other.
Mica and Calix, Mica for once not bouncing.
Yuri, camera down, just... present.
Keigan appeared in the doorway, took one look, and retreated to his room.
---
They gathered in the living room.
No one spoke.
What was there to say?
Jay sat between Shreya and Akshi, both of them holding her.
Keifer sat across from them, Keiran asleep in his lap.
The silence was unbearable.
But no one left.
---
Hours later, Jay spoke again.
"She would have been beautiful."
No one asked how she knew it was a girl.
"She would have had Keifer's eyes. And my stubbornness."
Akshi laughed weakly through tears. "Trouble."
"The best kind of trouble."
Shreya squeezed her hand. "She knew she was loved. Even for such a short time."
Jay looked at her. "You think?"
"I know."
---
That night, they didn't sleep.
They sat together.
Grieving together.
Holding each other together.
Percy made tea. Honey brought blankets.
C.N. quietly ordered food no one ate.
Mithun never left Shreya's side.
Chethan never left Akshi's.
And Keifer held Jay when she finally let him.
---
"I'm sorry," Jay whispered to him. "I'm sorry I couldn't—"
"Don't." His voice broke. "Don't ever apologize. You gave her life. You loved her. That's all that matters."
"But she's gone."
"She's not gone. She's in our hearts. She always will be."
Jay cried into his chest.
He held her.
The night stretched on.
---
Somewhere in the house, Keiran slept, Rex and Ganesha on guard.
He didn't understand.
But he knew Mamma was sad.
And Pappa was sad.
And all the aunties and uncles were sad.
He whispered to Rex, "Take care of the baby star."
Rex nodded.
Ganesha nodded.
They would.
