Chapter 11 - Between Breath and Goodbye.

Inside the emergency room, chaos reigned.

The sharp, rhythmic beeping of machines filled the air like a countdown no one wanted to hear. Doctors moved quickly around Lila's fragile body, their voices overlapping in urgency.

"Her pulse is unstable!"

"Get the suction ready!"

"We need to flush it out—now!"

Bright surgical lights cast harsh shadows across her pale face. Tubes, wires, and machines surrounded her, each one fighting to keep her tethered to life.

Lila lay unconscious.

Still.

Unresponsive.

The poison had spread fast—too fast. It coursed through her veins like wildfire, attacking her system without mercy. Her breathing was shallow, almost fading, as if her body was struggling to remember how to survive.

A doctor pressed firmly against her chest, trying to stabilize her condition.

"Come on… stay with us," he muttered under his breath.

For a moment—just one terrifying moment—the machine let out a long, continuous sound.

Beeeeeeep—

"Clear!"

A shock.

Her body jerked slightly.

Then—

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

A fragile rhythm returned.

A thin thread of life.

The doctors didn't stop.

They couldn't.

Outside, the atmosphere was just as intense.

Cassandra sat hunched over, her hands clasped tightly together, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably. Her shoulders shook as quiet sobs escaped her.

"I didn't even get to say anything to her…" she whispered brokenly.

Grace stood beside her.

Strong.

Composed.

But only on the surface.

Inside, her heart was racing wildly, fear clawing at every corner of her being. Her fingers trembled slightly as she wrapped her arms around Cassandra, pulling her close.

"She'll be fine," Grace said softly, though her voice carried a faint crack. "My daughter is strong… she'll fight."

But even she wasn't fully convinced.

Ethan stood a few steps away, frozen in place.

His eyes were locked on the emergency room doors, unblinking, unmoving.

His mind was a storm.

Why didn't I talk to her?

Why did I let things get so bad?

What if this is it?

His chest tightened painfully.

He ran a hand through his hair, pacing slightly before stopping again.

"No…" he whispered, shaking his head. "She's not leaving… she can't…"

Tears welled up in his eyes, but he didn't wipe them away.

Right there, with his heart breaking in silence, Ethan made a promise.

If you make it out of this…

I swear… I'll never leave you again.

The emergency room doors burst open suddenly.

Grace, Cassandra, and Ethan jumped to their feet immediately.

"Doctor!" Grace called, her voice trembling.

The doctor stepped out, removing his gloves, his expression serious but not hopeless.

"We've managed to bring her out of immediate danger," he said.

Relief hit them all at once.

Cassandra let out a shaky sob.

Grace closed her eyes briefly, whispering a silent prayer.

But then—

"She's still unconscious," the doctor added.

The relief shattered slightly.

"Let's hope she wakes up by this evening," he continued. "For now, she's stable."

Stable.

It wasn't enough—but it was something.

"In the meantime," the doctor said, looking between them, "I'd like to see Mrs. Grace and Mr. Ethan in my office."

Ethan blinked, slightly surprised, but nodded quickly.

"Yes, sir."

Grace squeezed Cassandra's shoulder gently before following the doctor, Ethan trailing behind.

Cassandra remained there, staring at the doors.

She exhaled deeply.

"Thank God…" she whispered.

But her expression slowly changed.

Her brows furrowed.

Her mind began connecting pieces.

"The drink…" she murmured. "The note…"

She frowned.

"That wasn't my handwriting…"

Her eyes widened slightly.

"…Then who gave it to her?"

Inside the doctor's office, the atmosphere was tense.

The doctor sat behind his desk, his hands folded neatly.

"Lila ingested a very poisonous substance," he began.

Grace gasped softly, her hand flying to her chest.

Ethan's jaw tightened instantly.

"She was lucky," the doctor continued. "Very lucky. If she had been brought in any later… even by a few seconds… we would have lost her."

Silence.

Heavy.

Crushing.

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

"Please…" she whispered, her voice breaking.

Ethan looked away briefly, clenching his fists.

"Right now, we're trying to remove as much of the toxin from her system as possible," the doctor added. "But we don't yet know how much damage has been done."

Ethan swallowed hard.

"Will she be okay?" he asked quietly.

The doctor paused.

"For now… we are hopeful."

That word again.

Hopeful.

"Once she's discharged," the doctor continued, "make sure she avoids anything that could trigger a reaction."

Grace nodded quickly.

"Yes… yes, of course…"

"If all goes well," the doctor said, "she should be discharged in about two days."

"Thank you… thank you so much," Grace said, her voice trembling.

Ethan remained silent, his thoughts elsewhere.

"You can see her now," the doctor said as he stood.

When they reached the ward, the door was slightly open.

Cassandra was already inside.

"Look, mum!" she said excitedly. "She's awake!"

Grace didn't hesitate.

She rushed in immediately.

"Oh my poor girl…" she said, hurrying to Lila's side. "How are you feeling? Any pain? Are you okay?"

Lila smiled faintly.

"I'm okay, mum… just tired…"

Her voice was weak—but alive.

Ethan stood at the door.

Frozen.

Their eyes met.

And everything else faded.

Grace noticed.

She exchanged a glance with Cassandra.

They both understood instantly.

"Uhm… Lila," Grace said gently, standing up, "I need to go sort your bills, okay? I'll be back soon."

Lila nodded slowly, still staring at Ethan.

As Grace passed him, she leaned closer.

"This is your chance," she whispered softly. "Don't miss it."

Ethan gave a small nod.

He walked toward Lila slowly.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

He sat beside her.

Silence filled the space between them.

"Lila…"

"Ethan…"

They spoke at the same time.

They paused.

Then laughed softly.

The tension eased slightly.

"Let me go first," Ethan said.

He took a deep breath.

"I'm sorry," he began, his voice heavy with emotion. "I'm sorry you had to go through this… I'm sorry I ignored your feelings… I'm sorry I didn't come to you."

His eyes glistened.

"I messed up, Lila. And I hate myself for it."

Lila looked at him quietly.

Then she murmured softly, almost teasing,

"Who told you I didn't like the kiss?"

Ethan blinked.

"…Wait, what?"

She turned her face slightly, embarrassed.

"Nothing."

He smirked.

"No, say it again."

"I didn't—"

But before she could finish, Ethan gently pulled her closer and kissed her.

Soft.

Slow.

But filled with everything they hadn't said.

Lila froze for a second…

Then melted into it, her fingers curling into his shirt.

The world disappeared.

Just them.

Just this moment.

At the door, Grace returned.

She paused.

A small smile formed on her lips.

Quietly… she closed the door again.

Inside, they pulled apart slowly.

Breathing softly.

Foreheads touching.

"I promised myself," Ethan whispered, "that if you survive this… I'll never let you go again."

Lila smiled faintly.

"Then don't," she whispered.

Meanwhile…

At school…

Victoria stood in the empty classroom.

Furious.

"You mean she was rescued?" she screamed, her voice echoing off the walls.

Madison and Claire flinched.

"Yes… Ethan took her," Madison stuttered.

Victoria's expression darkened.

"She won't survive this," she muttered.

Her fingers curled tightly into fists.

"If she does…" she added slowly, her voice dropping into something darker, "I'll make sure she doesn't again."

A chilling silence followed.

Then—

She laughed.

Low.

Cold.

Unstable.

And in that moment…

It was clear.

This was far from over.
