Chapter 58 - Chapter 57 — The Awakening Within

The silence after the commander's fall did not bring relief.

It brought dread.

The Warspawn had collapsed. The battlefield had stilled. The invasion—at least in this sector—had ended.

But no one moved.

Because at the center of it all stood Kael Varyn.

And something about him—

Was wrong.

"…Kael?" Lyra Frost called again, her voice weaker now but filled with unease.

No response.

He didn't turn.

Didn't acknowledge them.

Didn't even breathe the way a human should.

His body stood perfectly still, yet the space around him trembled continuously, like reality itself was reacting to his existence.

"…That's not just overflow," Zarek Voidborn muttered, his void energy flickering erratically. "…Something's interfering."

"Interfering with what?" Darius Stone asked, struggling to his feet.

Zarek's gaze darkened.

"…With him."

Kael took another step.

The sound echoed unnaturally across the battlefield.

Not loud.

But absolute.

Each movement carried weight—too much weight. The ground beneath him cracked instantly, unable to withstand the pressure of his presence.

Then—

The system flickered.

Violently.

[WARNING — CORE INSTABILITY DETECTED]

[Primordial Awakening: 68% → 70%]

A pulse erupted from Kael's body.

Not outward like before.

But through everything.

A distortion wave swept across Sector 9, bending the air, twisting the remains of structures, and forcing every hunter to brace themselves against the sudden surge.

Lyra gasped, clutching her side. "…He's still increasing…?"

"That's not possible…" Darius whispered.

Zarek clenched his fist.

"…It is if something is pushing him."

Far beneath the battlefield—

Hidden in darkness—

The observer smiled.

"…Yes… break it."

Their fingers moved across the corrupted interface, injecting something deeper into the system.

"…Let's see what happens when the limiter disappears."

Back above—

Kael stopped.

His head tilted upward slowly.

Toward the fracture in the sky.

His eyes glowed brighter—

Crimson deepening into something darker.

Something ancient.

Then—

He spoke.

"…Who…"

His voice was distorted.

Layered.

Not entirely his own.

"…is pulling the strings?"

The air went still.

For a moment—

Nothing answered.

Then—

The system responded.

Not with text.

Not with warnings.

But with presence.

A voice.

Cold.

Unfamiliar.

Everywhere.

"…You have exceeded expectations."

Zarek's eyes widened. "…You hear that too…?"

No one answered.

Because they all did.

Kael's gaze sharpened.

"…Show yourself."

"…Not yet."

The voice was calm.

Amused.

"…You're not ready."

Kael's aura flared violently.

"…Try me."

The ground shattered beneath him as his power surged again, the pressure becoming so intense that the very air seemed to resist his existence.

[Primordial Awakening: 70% → 72%]

Zarek staggered back. "…Kael, stop! That's not power you can control!"

But Kael didn't stop.

Because something inside him—

Was responding.

Not to the voice.

But to the challenge.

"…You're hiding," Kael said.

His tone was low.

Dangerous.

"…Which means you're afraid."

A pause.

Then—

A soft laugh echoed across the battlefield.

"…Afraid?"

The air darkened.

The fracture above pulsed violently.

"…No."

The pressure shifted.

Not from Kael—

But from above.

Something vast.

Something watching.

"…I'm curious."

The sky tore wider.

Not physically.

But perceptually.

Like a veil being pulled back.

And for a brief moment—

Kael saw it.

Not a form.

Not a body.

But a presence.

Watching from beyond the fracture.

Ancient.

Immense.

Unreachable.

His body reacted instantly.

His aura surged in response—

Violently.

Uncontrollably.

[WARNING — LIMITER FAILURE IMMINENT]

[Primordial Awakening: 72% → 75%]

"KAEL!" Lyra screamed.

Too late.

The surge detonated.

A massive wave of energy erupted from Kael, blasting everything away from him in a perfect radius. The ground collapsed, structures disintegrated, and even the air seemed to tear apart under the pressure.

Zarek threw up a void barrier just in time, shielding the others from the worst of it.

"…He's losing control!" Darius shouted.

"No," Zarek said, his voice tight.

"…He's being forced past it."

At the center of the destruction—

Kael stood alone.

His body trembling slightly now.

Not from weakness.

From strain.

From something fighting within him.

His eyes flickered.

For a split second—

They returned to normal.

"…I…" he muttered.

Then—

Darkness surged again.

Overriding.

Suppressing.

His voice deepened.

"…Not enough."

Zarek's expression hardened. "…That's not him talking anymore."

Eren stepped forward, shadows gathering around him.

"…Then we bring him back."

Zarek didn't respond.

Because he knew—

That might not be possible.

Kael raised his hand slowly.

And the air above him warped.

Space twisted inward, forming a concentrated point of distortion that pulsed with unstable energy.

"…If you won't come down…" Kael said.

His voice layered again.

"…I'll drag you here."

The distortion intensified.

Pulling.

Reaching toward the fracture itself.

Toward whatever lay beyond.

The voice returned.

But this time—

Less amused.

More interested.

"…You would challenge me?"

Kael didn't hesitate.

"…I already am."

The battlefield trembled.

Because this—

Was no longer a fight against Warspawn.

Or commanders.

Or armies.

This was something else entirely.

Something far beyond what any of them had faced before.

Zarek exhaled slowly.

"…We're in trouble."

Above—

The fracture pulsed again.

And something—

Shifted.

Responding.

For the first time—

The entity beyond was no longer just watching.

It was considering.

And Kael—

Had just made himself its focus.
