Chapter 61 - Chapter 60 — The System Rewritten

The silence didn't last.

It never did.

Not in a place that had already been torn open once before.

Sector 9 of Astra Prime had transformed completely. What remained of the battlefield no longer resembled a ruined district—it had become something artificial, something designed.

Structured.

Controlled.

Alive.

The fractured ground had sealed into smooth, dark surfaces etched with faint, glowing lines. Towering formations—once remnants of buildings—now stood like monoliths, their surfaces pulsing in slow, synchronized rhythms. Even the air felt heavier, denser, like the world itself had been compressed into a tighter space.

"…This isn't natural," Darius Stone muttered, turning slowly as he took in the changes.

"Of course it's not," Ragnar Kain replied, his voice low. "…This was built."

Zarek crouched slightly, his fingers brushing the surface beneath them. Void energy flickered faintly around his hand as he tested the material.

"…Not stone," Zarek Voidborn said. "…Not metal either."

He pressed harder.

Nothing.

"…It's resisting analysis."

"That's because it's not just material," Kael said.

All eyes turned to Kael Varyn.

He stood at the center of the formation, his gaze sweeping slowly across the environment, reading it not just with sight—but with instinct.

"…It's part of the system."

A chill ran through the group.

"…You're saying the system can create physical space now?" Lyra asked weakly, still leaning against Eren for support.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth—

Was worse.

"…Not create," he said.

"…Override."

Silence followed.

Because if that was true—

Then nothing here was real anymore.

Or worse—

Everything was.

A faint hum spread through the area.

Low.

Resonant.

The glowing lines across the ground pulsed once.

Then again.

Then—

The system activated.

[ASCENSION PHASE II — INITIALIZATION COMPLETE]

[PARTICIPANTS DETECTED]

[TRIAL PARAMETERS LOADING…]

"…Trial?" Darius repeated.

"That's not good," Eren muttered.

"No," Zarek said quietly.

"…It's very bad."

The air shifted.

The monoliths surrounding them began to move—not physically, but spatially. Distances stretched and compressed, angles bending in ways that didn't follow logic.

The battlefield was rearranging itself.

"…It's isolating us," Ragnar said, already adjusting his stance.

He was right.

The formation expanded outward, creating separation between them.

Not enough to fully divide the group—

But enough to disrupt coordination.

Enough to test them individually.

"…Stay close!" Darius called out.

But even as he spoke—

The space between them stretched further.

Not visibly.

But functionally.

Eren moved first, attempting to close the distance toward Kael—

And stopped.

"…That's not right…"

He had moved forward.

But hadn't gotten any closer.

"…Spatial manipulation," Zarek confirmed, his voice tense. "…We're not moving through normal space anymore."

Kael stepped forward.

Once.

The ground responded.

The glowing lines beneath his feet brightened slightly.

"…It reacts to intent," he said.

Zarek looked at him sharply. "…You're already figuring it out?"

Kael didn't respond.

Because he wasn't just figuring it out.

He was feeling it.

The system wasn't just observing.

It was interacting.

Testing.

Adapting.

"…Then what's the objective?" Lyra asked.

As if answering her—

The system displayed it.

[TRIAL ONE — SURVIVAL]

[ELIMINATE OR BE ELIMINATED]

"…Straightforward," Ragnar said.

Too straightforward.

Because immediately after—

The ground split open.

Not violently.

Not chaotically.

But precisely.

Controlled.

From the glowing lines, forms began to rise.

Humanoid.

Structured.

Perfect.

Not like the Warspawn.

Not unstable.

These were different.

Cleaner.

Sharper.

Their bodies were composed of the same material as the battlefield itself—dark, polished, with faint energy flowing through their forms like veins of light.

"…Constructs," Zarek said.

"…System-generated."

Their eyes lit up simultaneously.

And locked onto targets.

"…They're assigning us," Eren muttered.

Each construct stepped forward.

One.

Then another.

Then more.

They didn't rush.

They didn't hesitate.

They advanced with purpose.

With precision.

With intent.

One stopped directly in front of Kael.

Taller than the rest.

Its presence heavier.

More defined.

[PRIMARY OPPONENT ASSIGNED]

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Of course."

The construct moved first.

Not fast.

But exact.

Its arm extended in a straight line, a precise strike aimed directly at Kael's core.

Kael didn't dodge.

He stepped into it.

His hand intercepted the attack, stopping it mid-motion.

The impact alone cracked the ground beneath them.

"…Stronger than the Warspawn," Kael noted.

The construct responded instantly.

Its body shifted slightly, adjusting its stance mid-contact.

Adapting.

Refining.

Then it struck again.

Faster.

Sharper.

More efficient.

Kael smiled faintly.

"…Good."

Behind him, the others engaged as well.

Darius braced against two constructs, their strikes landing with heavy force against his already-damaged armor.

"…These things don't hold back!" he grunted.

Ragnar moved like a blade through water, cutting cleanly through one—

Only for it to reform partially, its structure reassembling with minimal delay.

"…Not full regeneration," Ragnar observed.

"…Reconstruction."

Zarek unleashed a burst of void energy, collapsing space around a group of constructs—

Only to watch as they adapted, their movements adjusting to resist the distortion.

"…They're learning again," he muttered.

Lyra, despite her condition, raised her hand weakly—

A thin layer of ice spread across the ground, slowing one of the constructs just enough for Eren to strike from the shadows.

"…They're not invincible," Eren said.

"…But they're close."

Back at the center—

Kael stepped back slightly.

Observing.

Measuring.

The construct in front of him shifted its stance again.

Its movements becoming smoother.

More refined.

More… human.

"…You're improving," Kael said quietly.

The construct didn't respond.

It didn't need to.

It moved.

Faster this time.

Its strike nearly matched Kael's own speed.

Kael blocked.

Countered.

Their clash sent another shockwave through the environment.

But this time—

The battlefield absorbed it.

No destruction.

No collapse.

Just containment.

"…Controlled damage output," Kael noted.

"…So that's how it is."

He exhaled slowly.

Then—

His aura shifted.

Not explosive.

Not overwhelming.

Focused.

Condensed.

"…Then let's see how far you can follow."

He stepped forward again.

And the fight escalated.

Each movement faster.

Each strike heavier.

Each exchange pushing the construct further.

Forcing it to adapt beyond its initial parameters.

Behind the scenes—

Far below—

The observer watched closely.

Every movement.

Every reaction.

Every escalation.

"…Yes…" they murmured.

"…Learn."

"…Grow."

"…Break."

Back above—

Kael's system flickered faintly.

Not unstable this time.

But… responsive.

[Primordial Awakening: Stable at 80%]

His eyes sharpened.

"…So it can stabilize…"

A realization.

A dangerous one.

The construct attacked again—

But Kael moved first.

Faster than before.

Stronger.

More precise.

His fist connected cleanly with its core.

And this time—

It didn't adapt fast enough.

The construct shattered.

Completely.

Its form collapsing into fragments that dissolved into the ground beneath them.

The system responded immediately.

[PRIMARY OPPONENT — ELIMINATED]

[ADAPTATION DATA RECORDED]

Kael stood still.

Watching.

Waiting.

Because he knew—

That wasn't the end.

The system pulsed again.

Stronger.

[TRIAL ONE — PROGRESSION]

[DIFFICULTY INCREASED]

The remaining constructs froze briefly—

Then changed.

Their forms shifted.

Evolved.

Stronger.

Faster.

More refined.

Zarek's expression darkened. "…You've got to be kidding me…"

Kael's lips curved slightly.

"…Good."

His aura flared faintly.

Controlled.

But undeniable.

"…Now it's interesting."

The battlefield reset around them.

The constructs advanced again.

And this time—

The real test began.
