Chapter 135: It's Time to Leave the Space
"Shen Que, when the extreme cold is almost over, let's move," Meng Ci said suddenly.
The extreme cold was about to pass, and the ice and snow would soon begin to melt, making way for the intense heat.
Living on a high floor would only make it hotter when the time came.
Meng Ci had chosen to live here initially to prevent the villa from being washed away by heavy rain or buried under heavy snow.
Now that these two threats were about to pass, it was time to move into the villa.
Moreover, the villa had a basement.
During the scorching period, it would likely be much cooler underground than above ground.
Shen Que nodded.
He chose this place after his rebirth because of its high elevation, which protected them from heavy rain and snow.
However, he hadn't yet decided where they would live afterward.
Meng Ci said, "I have a villa in West Mountain Wilderness."
West Mountain Wilderness was where Meng Ci bought his villa, located halfway up the mountain, surrounded by trees, and with military presence, making it relatively safe.
Meng Ci expressed that he never wanted to fight for survival again.
Furthermore, there were many spaces within the villa's compound. Meng Ci had created several flower beds at the time but hadn't planted anything.
This time, they could exchange some heat-resistant seeds at the official trading point and bring some soil from the space to plant them.
The reason Meng Ci didn't choose to grow plants inside the space was that he felt his space was too independent, often kicking people out.
If everything were stored in the space and it stopped working one day, would they starve?
It was better to have a backup plan.
Shen Que agreed.
West Mountain Wilderness was situated halfway up the mountain, with a large open area in front of it.
In the previous life, during the zombie era, the authorities chose to build a base on the open land in front of the mountain.
Shen Que had mentioned this in his letter, and it was possible that the authorities would choose the same location this time.
Currently, living there seemed like a good choice.
"However, with the military and government personnel around, it might be difficult for us to enter," Shen Que said worriedly.
Thinking back to the heavy rain period, when he and Meng Ci went looking for soil, they saw soldiers stationed at major intersections, making it hard to get in.
Moreover, the authorities had previously set up a refugee camp in West Mountain Wilderness, so Meng Ci's house might already be occupied.
Shen Que looked at his own space, thinking about taking out some food to exchange for a room.
Meng Ci optimistically said, "Although it's the apocalypse, I have the deed to the house."
"That villa was bought with my money; how dare they not let me live there?"
"Besides, I found out that the authorities requisitioned villas numbered fifty-one to one hundred, while mine is number eight, so there's no need to worry about it being occupied."
Meng Ci kept the deed to villa number eight in West Mountain Wilderness in the bedside table of the bedroom in the space.
Moreover, he had prepared a contingency plan.
Additionally, the villa had been modified by Meng Ci, making it easy to defend and hard to attack.
"Or, we can ask Lu Chen first," Shen Que suggested.
Meng Ci thought this was a good idea, to try diplomacy before resorting to force.
If Lu Chen insisted on not letting them stay, they would find a way to sneak in.
Meng Ci planned to stay in the space for six days before leaving.
Since the space had no distinction between day and night, always bright, Meng Ci checked the time periodically and recorded it.
He also feared being kicked out of the space and freezing to death during the remaining five days.
So, although Meng Ci didn't verbally curse the space after hearing Shen Que's words, he cursed it fiercely in his heart.
For the next five days, the two of them worked on cultivating the land.
However, most of the time, it was Shen Que who did the planting.
It wasn't that Meng Ci was lazy, but Shen Que often acted without restraint, leaving Meng Ci sore and weak.
Even though Meng Ci soaked in the bath after each session, his body seemed to have become immune to the water in the space, and the effect wasn't as good as before.
Therefore, when Meng Ci lay in bed, wincing and playing with his phone while cursing Shen Que for being shameless, Shen Que was cheerfully planting.
Shen Que even found a few packets of wheat and corn seeds and tried planting them in two plots.
If the food in the space ran out and the apocalypse wasn't over, they could try grinding the grains.
Soon, the final day arrived.
Meng Ci and Shen Que dressed warmly, and even the usually heat-tolerant eggplant was given a rough, makeshift coat by Meng Ci.
Howl, howl.
Eggplant lowered his head and bit at the clothes, not wanting to wear them as they felt uncomfortable.
Seeing Eggplant about to take off his clothes, Meng Ci slapped him on the head.
"No taking them off."
Howl.
Eggplant whined pitifully.
Meng Ci was speechless; if it weren't for the fear that this guy might suddenly leave the space and freeze to death in the cold outside, Meng Ci wouldn't care whether he wore clothes or not.
"Shen Que, are you ready?" Meng Ci asked.
"Ready."
Shen Que held an iron can with several burning coals inside, ready to quickly start a fire once they exited the space.
Soon, after a brief darkness, the two men and the dog appeared in the house.
Without a word, Shen Que started the stove.
As Meng Ci emerged, several rabbits were kicked out from all directions within the space.
The rabbits looked bewildered, clearly unaware of what had happened.
The smarter ones hopped into their former nests.
Meng Ci originally planned to keep the rabbits in the space until the house warmed up to prevent them from freezing to death.
But it seemed the space couldn't carry living creatures.
Seeing two little rabbits huddled motionless, Meng Ci's alarm bells rang.
They couldn't have frozen to death just after leaving the space, could they?
Meng Ci quickly gathered the rabbits and placed them next to the mother rabbit. With too many rabbits, one mother rabbit couldn't warm them all.
So Meng Ci directed Eggplant to curl up in its nest and placed the remaining rabbits in front of its belly.
Howl!
Eggplant protested.
It was a wolf, a wolf, not a mother rabbit.
And it was a carnivore; didn't the owner fear it would eat the rabbits?
Eggplant's eyes fixed on the rabbits, and though the rabbits likely sensed Eggplant's warmth and didn't feel afraid, they pressed close to him.
"Eggplant, if you dare to eat them, you'll never get any meat again," Meng Ci warned.
Howl.
Eggplant lay down on its legs, indicating it understood.
But its eyes remained fixed on the rabbits, clearly unwilling, and drool dripped from its mouth.
However, with the room still cold, the drool quickly froze into icicles.
Eggplant found this interesting and temporarily stopped staring at the rabbits, instead pawing at the ice.
After settling the rabbits, Meng Ci hurriedly took out a generator and diesel from the space and got the electricity running.
Once the power was connected, he plugged in two small heaters near the rabbit nests.
Then he plugged in the electric heating pad in the rabbit nests.
Seeing the rabbits gradually recover, Meng Ci felt relieved.
