Chapter 208: Eggplant, Let Your Wife Eat

"Lieutenant Lu."

After five days had passed, Meng Ci estimated that it was about time and headed to the military district to see if he could bring Eggplant back.

Notified by the soldiers, Lu Chen hurried over.

Perhaps because Eggplant had performed excellently these past few days, Lu Chen's complexion was rosy, and a deep smile appeared on his usually serious face.

"Comrades Meng and Shen, you're here!"

"I'll take you to see Eggplant right away."

On the way to see Eggplant, Lu Chen kept emphasizing how remarkable Eggplant's endurance had been, calming down almost every police dog.

Meng Ci didn't know how to respond to these remarks.

He and Shen Que were not innocent, but they were not shameless either.

Surprisingly, Shen Que, acting as if he'd lost his mind, actually asked why wolves had such endurance and remarked that humans generally lasted a shorter time.

Especially when he said "humans usually don't last as long," he kept sneaking glances at Meng Ci.

Meng Ci immediately caught on to what Shen Que was doing.

So he rolled his eyes and pinched Shen Que when Lu Chen wasn't looking.

He knew Shen Que had enduring stamina, but did he have to show off like a peacock strutting its stuff?

Instead of feeling hurt, Shen Que took the pinch as Meng Ci's approval.

"Xiao Ci, Eggplant is a wolf. You can't compare it to me."

Seizing the moment when Lu Chen wasn't looking, Shen Que suddenly whispered in Meng Ci's ear.

If the situation weren't so inappropriate, Meng Ci would have loved to pull out a grenade and blow Shen Que up.

In broad daylight, did this guy have any shame left?

Unaware of what was going on between them, Lu Chen continued enthusiastically describing Eggplant's progress.

"Eggplant is currently housed with Eagle."

"You wouldn't believe it, but after seeing Eagle, the usually battle-hardened Eggplant suddenly became like a shy young man, almost unable to move."

"Now the wolf and the dog are getting along extremely well."

After recounting Eggplant's glorious deeds, Lu Chen began talking about the relationship between Eggplant and Eagle.

"Didn't Eggplant and Eagle fight?" Meng Ci had been listening the whole way and finally found an opportunity to ask.

"Of course not!"

"Eggplant likes Eagle so much, how could it bear to hit him!"

From Lu Chen's steady expression and joyful words, Meng Ci could tell that Eggplant had indeed performed well over the past five days.

Relieved that Eggplant and Eagle were getting along, Meng Ci felt at ease.

When they arrived at the place where Eggplant and Eagle were kept, Meng Ci saw from afar that Eggplant was standing next to Eagle like a guard, occasionally getting close to Eagle, licking its neck, and nuzzling its eyes.

Eagle, meanwhile, stood quietly.

But Meng Ci knew that Eagle didn't dislike Eggplant. After all, it didn't reject Eggplant, and it seemed shy around Eggplant.

"Meng, look, they are getting along quite well!" Lu Chen said, feeling relieved that Eagle and Eggplant were getting along. He hoped that Meng Ci, who cared so much for Eggplant, would also take a liking to Eagle.

Eagle would be just fine.

When Eggplant spotted them approaching, it gave a soft bark to Eagle, then led Eagle over.

After Eagle came over, it first looked at Lu Chen, then greeted Meng Ci and Shen Que with two barks, but there was no sense of danger in its calls.

Meng Ci had been carrying a bag all the way, and since Eagle wasn't aggressive, he opened the bag and took out a can of wild boar meat, placing it in front of Eagle.

"Eagle, eat up."

Meng Ci crouched down and gently patted Eagle's head.

Eagle didn't eat, but instead looked at Lu Chen beside him.

Lu Chen's expression flickered with hesitation, and he also crouched down to pat Eagle's back.

"Eagle, from now on, you'll stay with Eggplant and follow them."

"You have to listen to them, okay?"

"Caw caw caw!" Eagle called out a few times.

Whether it understood or not was uncertain.

Meanwhile, Eggplant nudged the can on the ground toward Eagle.

"Caw!"

Eagle's eyes showed reluctance, but it knew its condition meant it could no longer serve the army and might even be a burden. So it reluctantly ate the meat from the can.

With determination, it walked to Meng Ci's side. As they left, Eagle didn't look back, afraid it wouldn't want to go if it did.

Only after they were in the off-road vehicle and driving away did Eagle slowly turn to gaze at the base. When Meng Ci and Shen Que weren't looking, it quietly shed a tear.

Eggplant, distressed to see its partner crying, gently pressed against it, licked away Eagle's tears, and then nestled close, softly whimpering for comfort.

Eagle was strong and quickly shook off its sadness.

Seeing the two getting along well in the rearview mirror, Meng Ci finally relaxed.

When they returned to the villa and brought Eagle into the house, Eggplant eagerly placed its own food bowl in front of Eagle and let out a couple of awoos at Meng Ci and Shen Que.

Its expression seemed to say, "Hurry up and feed my partner! We can't let it starve!"

Meng Ci, exasperated, gave Eggplant a kick.

This guy is just an ungrateful wolf. He's barely been with Shen Ying for a short time, and he's already forgotten all about me because of his new wife!

However, although Meng Ci was angry, he still went out of his way to get food for Shen Ying in the end.

When Shen Ying saw the food appearing out of nowhere in Meng Ci's hand, his eyes widened in surprise.

The food in the feeding bowl in front of him was fragrant rice, tempting pork trotters, fresh vegetables, and two sausages.

Shen Ying hesitated to eat.

Meng Ci noticed and kicked Qie Zi again.

"Let your wife eat."

Although Qie Zi was a bit reluctant, he still whimpered twice and pushed the food dish toward Shen Ying, urging him to eat.

Shen Ying looked at Qie Zi, then at Meng Ci, and finally lowered his head to start eating.

Initially, Shen Ying tried to eat modestly, but after tasting the delicious food, he began to wolf it down like he hadn't eaten in days.

Of course, the military hadn't mistreated the dogs. Though the food wasn't as plentiful as before the apocalypse, every meal had meat, and they ate better than the soldiers.

However, the meat was processed wild boar, frog meat, or rat meat.

These meats just didn't taste nearly as good as pork.

Qie Zi watched his wife eat happily and actually looked relieved.

Meng Ci shook his head, thinking he must have imagined it.

He then took out another bowl from his spatial storage, poured some rice into it, and added a chicken leg and two portions of meat.

As a result, this loyal dog, Qie Zi, took the chicken leg and gave it to Shen Ying.

Shen Que, seeing Qie Zi's actions, said with relief, "Qie Zi is truly a student I taught. He knows how to care for his wife."

Hearing this, Meng Ci rolled his eyes and walked away.
