Chapter 224: Sure, You Gotta Trust Eggplant
"Our best opportunity right now is to sneak in after the patrol team has set out and the group of women has been escorted out of the mountain."
Meng Ci and Shen Que entered the space and began planning their route of action.
However, with the polar day in full swing, it would be tough for them to reach the tunnel undetected.
"Woof, woof!"
The eagle was very disciplined. Upon entering the space and seeing the training equipment Shen Que had set up for Eggplant, it would train on its own during each visit.
And under the eagle's influence, Eggplant also began to train.
But to Meng Ci, it seemed like Eggplant was more interested in chasing the eagle, with the training being a mere side effect.
"How about we use Eggplant as bait?" Meng Ci suggested.
Hearing his master's call, Eggplant looked in Meng Ci's direction. Seeing that his master wasn't calling him again, he howled and chased after the eagle.
...
Meng Ci was exasperated, thinking Eggplant was hopeless. He could only hope its offspring wouldn't be as distracted by love.
"Sure, it's possible!"
Shen Que nodded, but looking at Eggplant's foolish appearance, he felt that sending Eggplant would likely put it in danger.
The eagle was actually the best choice.
But the eagle was a German Shepherd, and its aura was clearly distinctive. If they sent the eagle, those people would definitely notice something unusual.
Shen Que voiced his concerns.
Meng Ci said, "You gotta trust Eggplant."
Of course, Meng Ci had to admit that while Eggplant looked slow-witted, it was pretty reliable when it mattered.
As Eggplant's trainer, Shen Que knew its physical condition was excellent, but he was worried Eggplant might mess up at a critical moment.
"It won't!" Meng Ci guaranteed.
However, just as the words left his mouth, Eggplant, running too fast, found the eagle right in front of it.
Not wanting to crash into his "wife," Eggplant couldn't stop in time and faceplanted into the ground.
The eagle, embarrassed by the scene, flew off in a huff.
Meng Ci, seeing this, felt his earlier guarantee was quite embarrassing.
Embarrassing or not, Eggplant was still their best bet.
After observing for another dozen hours, Meng Ci and Shen Que saw their chance.
The five-man patrol team set out, while six men escorted four women up the mountain path, then down again once they reached the summit.
Meng Ci and Shen Que, along with the eagle, moved in the opposite direction.
They couldn't risk going straight down this side, so they had to take a big detour, heading down to the base of the mountain before making their way to the tunnel.
After his owner left, Eggplant began to run wild and howl uncontrollably on the mountaintop.
Soon, the people in the opposite tunnel heard Eggplant's howls, and two men came out holding shotguns.
Eggplant's eyes were sharp.
Naturally, Eggplant saw them too, and after letting out a couple of howls, he dashed down toward the tunnel.
Awooo!
I'm coming, so get ready!
But Eggplant knew his owner was taking a detour, so he held back for now.
The men guarding the tunnel saw Eggplant and, remembering the tasty wild boar they'd had earlier, couldn't resist smacking their lips.
"I wonder what wolf tastes like!" said one of them.
The other man looked back at the tunnel and suggested, "Why don't we go take it down and come back to improve our meal?"
"Okay!"
The two men hit it off, grabbed their shotguns, and charged down.
Eggplant, who had been running wild in the forest, suddenly caught the scent of strangers and knew they were coming.
But since his owner hadn't signaled for his mate to initiate the action, he couldn't rush towards the tunnel yet.
Since he couldn't charge into the tunnel yet, maybe he could deal with these two in the forest and ease the pressure on his owner.
"Awooo!"
Eggplant howled to attract the two men.
"Over there, I heard the sound!"
"Let's go."
Hearing Eggplant's howl, the two men headed toward him.
As a wolf, Eggplant ruled the forest.
His speed was incredibly fast, and before the two men realized, he had already moved to another spot and let out several howls.
With the echoes in the forest making it impossible for the men to pinpoint his location, Eggplant kept howling, leading one of the men deeper into the forest.
"I'll take this side, you take the other," one of them suggested.
"Okay."
Even though the wolf was big, they weren't worried because they had their guns.
When the two men split up, Eggplant's eyes gleamed with excitement.
He kept howling, leading one of the men further away.
Once Eggplant found the perfect spot, he stopped and silently hid behind a rock.
As the man walked past the rock, Eggplant leaped up and bit down on his neck.
With his neck clamped, the man couldn't scream, and Eggplant's massive size pinned him down, rendering him immobile.
Five minutes later, the man's struggles gradually diminished until he ceased to respond.
Eggplant stood up and waited quietly to one side, not seeing any sign of the man's breathing. Upon hearing another man's voice, Eggplant left.
Running in another direction, it repeated the same method, killing the other person as well.
In heaven, Eggplant had once smelled gunpowder.
So after sniffing the two men and detecting the scent of gunpowder from the shotguns, it decisively carried off both guns.
Not long after Meng Ci and Shen Que left the mountaintop, they switched to mountain motorcycles and headed downhill.
However, when they reached the foot of the mountain and moved toward the tunnel, the road was no longer passable, forcing them to walk.
Due to a landslide, many rocks were piled up, so they had to climb up and down, which took a considerable amount of time.
During this period, Meng Ci almost got bitten by a snake, which he didn't notice until the last moment.
Fortunately, the eagle swooped in quickly and bit the snake at its vital point.
Meng Ci nearly jumped out of his skin!
Before entering the book, Meng Ci had always lived in the city, where he rarely encountered even earthworms, let alone snakes.
Now, suddenly seeing a black snake as thick as a small arm, he was naturally terrified.
Seeing Meng Ci frightened, Shen Que quickly supported him.
"It's okay, the eagle has it."
Meng Ci nodded.
