The scream didn't echo.
It got swallowed.
Floor 50 ate sound like it ate light.
Jaehyuk hit the corner and saw the corridor ahead break into chaos. Raiders in mismatched armor. Vanguard colors on the far side. Neutral climbers smashed between them like furniture.
And in the middle, a boy with a chalk-smudged cheek fell to his knees.
Han Yejin's brother.
Jaehyuk recognized him because Yejin had shown him a photo two floors ago like it was a weapon she kept on her phone.
Kang Minsoo.
Seventeen.
Too young to have this look in his eyes.
The floor mechanic triggered.
[Raid Phase: ACTIVE]
[Safe routes: NONE]
"Move," Mira said.
She was already moving.
Her blade bit into the first raider. Blood sprayed warm and coppery. The smell hit Jaehyuk's tongue.
Somin shoved past him, hands glowing. "Minsoo!"
Minsoo flinched at his name like it was a slap.
A Vanguard spear slammed into the stone near his head. He threw himself sideways.
Jaehyuk Shadow Stepped.
Three strides compressed to one.
He landed between Minsoo and the spearline and punched the spear shaft hard enough to splinter it. The Vanguard fighter recoiled.
"You're late," a voice murmured.
Not in his ear.
In the floor.
Jaehyuk's eyes flicked.
Grey coat.
He caught a glimpse through bodies and blood. A man walking behind Vanguard lines like he belonged there. Hands in his pockets. Calm.
Iteration 6.
He wasn't fighting.
He was watching.
Corralling.
Mira slammed her shoulder into a raider and drove them into the wall. Bone cracked. The sound was wet.
Somin reached Minsoo.
Her light hit him.
Too late.
Jaehyuk saw the wound under his ribs, the way his shirt darkened fast, the way his breath came out thin like a leak.
Minsoo looked up at Somin.
"Noona," he whispered.
Not Yejin.
Her.
Somin froze.
Jaehyuk's stomach dropped.
"You remember me?" Somin asked.
Minsoo's lips moved. His eyes were glassy. "You... you gave me candy at the vendor stalls. Floor 12. You said... don't be brave. Be alive."
Somin made a broken sound.
She pressed both hands to the wound. Healing light flared, hot and white.
Jaehyuk watched her face.
She wasn't panicking.
She was working.
Hard.
Like she could out-argue the Tower with her hands.
Mira cut down another Vanguard fighter and shouted, "JaeHYUK!"
Jaehyuk turned.
Three raiders were pushing the flank. Neutral climbers trying to crawl away. One man dragging his friend by the collar, leaving a blood trail.
Jaehyuk moved.
Shadow Step.
Punch.
Kick.
Elbow.
The fight was a blur of impact and breath.
He smelled sweat and iron and the sick sweet stink of a floor that had been soaked in violence for too many cycles.
When he looked back, Somin was still on her knees.
Minsoo was still on the floor.
And Mira had stopped fighting.
That was the first wrong thing.
Mira never stopped.
Somin's light dimmed.
Not because she quit.
Because she ran out of room.
Minsoo's eyes found Jaehyuk.
He swallowed.
"Hyung," Minsoo whispered.
Jaehyuk didn't know him.
Not really.
But the Tower had made him part of their orbit anyway.
"Don't," Jaehyuk said.
Minsoo's mouth twitched.
Almost a smile.
"Yejin noona..." he breathed. "Tell her... I didn't take the safe map."
Somin shook her head hard. "No. No, no, no. Stay. Stay with me."
Minsoo's fingers twitched once against her sleeve.
Then went still.
Somin's hands kept glowing.
For two more seconds.
Then the light went out like a candle pinched between fingers.
Silence hit the corridor.
Not because the fighting stopped.
Because the Tower wanted everyone to hear this part.
A chime.
[Climber: KANG MINSOO]
[Status: DECEASED]
Somin stared at the text like it was a lie she could punch.
Mira's face went blank.
Jaehyuk felt his chest tighten.
Not grief.
Rage.
Because he'd saved Somin.
Because he'd broken Floor 23.
Because he'd thought that meant he could keep doing this.
He couldn't.
Not on Floor 50.
Not anymore.
Behind the Vanguard line, the grey coat turned his head.
Met Jaehyuk's eyes.
A small nod.
Not apology.
Confirmation.
This was the first dead.
The Tower's payment.
Another chime.
A reward prompt.
For the kill.
[Reward Issued]
[Observation: Updated]
Somin's voice came out raw.
"Updated what?"
Jaehyuk didn't answer.
He couldn't.
Because the words in the brackets felt personal.
Like the Tower had leaned close to whisper in his ear.
We're watching.
And you don't get to save everyone.
The corridor shook.
Not from combat.
From the floor itself.
A siren began to wail.
Low at first.
Then louder.
A mechanical alarm in a place that hated machines.
[Warning]
[Raid Phase Escalation: 02:00]
Mira moved again.
She didn't look at Minsoo.
She didn't look at Somin.
She stepped between them and the nearest Vanguard group like a wall deciding to become a blade.
"We move," Mira said.
Somin didn't react.
Her hands were still on Minsoo's chest.
Not healing.
Holding.
Like if she kept her hands there, the Tower couldn't finish writing the line.
Jaehyuk crouched.
He didn't touch her.
He spoke low.
"Somin."
Her eyes didn't shift.
"Somin." He made his voice smaller. "We have to move."
Somin swallowed. Her throat made a clicking sound.
"He remembered me," she whispered.
Jaehyuk felt something crack behind his ribs.
"Yeah," he said.
"He wasn't supposed to." Her voice was thin. "I wasn't supposed to be in his life."
Jaehyuk stared at the dead boy.
This was what changing the timeline did.
It didn't just save.
It rewrote.
And the Tower kept receipts.
Mira cut down another raider. Blood hit the stone and steamed.
"Now," Mira said. "Or you die too."
Somin flinched like the words were a slap.
She finally lifted her hands.
Her palms were slick with blood.
Not hers.
She wiped them on her pants without looking.
Then she stood.
She didn't cry.
Not yet.
Her face had that old calm again.
War face.
But her eyes were wrong.
Deeper.
Like the Tower had taken something and left a hollow where it used to be.
Jaehyuk grabbed Minsoo's jacket by the collar.
Somin's voice sharpened.
"What are you doing?"
"Taking him," Jaehyuk said.
"Why?"
"Because Yejin deserves a body." He swallowed. "And because I'm not letting Vanguard use him as a marker on a map."
Mira glanced back once. "You're slow."
"I know."
They moved.
Not as a clean party.
As a group pushing through chaos with a dead weight between them.
Floor 50 didn't reward compassion.
It punished it.
Every corridor they turned into had another ambush.
Raiders with stolen Vanguard weapons.
Vanguard squads 'clearing' routes by using neutral climbers as shields.
People running with their eyes empty.
People begging.
People stepping over bodies like stepping stones.
Jaehyuk's shoulders burned.
Minsoo was light.
Too light.
Seventeen years of life shouldn't weigh this little.
Somin stayed close.
Not to help carry.
To make sure Minsoo didn't become just an object.
Mira held the front.
She was the only thing keeping them from getting swallowed.
When they reached a narrow hall, Jaehyuk saw the grey coat again.
Not close.
Across a junction.
Iteration 6 stood with Vanguard officers like he was one of them.
He wasn't giving orders.
He was correcting.
A hand gesture.
A small shake of his head.
An officer changed route.
A squad moved.
Like the floor itself had a human interface.
Jaehyuk's vision narrowed.
He stepped forward.
Mira caught his sleeve.
"No," she said.
"That's him," Jaehyuk said.
"I know." Mira's grip tightened. "And if you chase him right now, we die."
Somin looked at the grey coat.
Her voice went quiet.
"That's the one who keeps doing this," she whispered.
Jaehyuk didn't answer.
Because yes.
Because he couldn't afford to say it out loud.
The grey coat turned.
Met Jaehyuk's eyes.
He smiled.
Not friendly.
Not cruel.
Like two players acknowledging the board.
Then he raised one finger.
Pointed upward.
Above.
Floor 51.
And mouthed a word Jaehyuk read without hearing.
Count.
A chime hit the corridor again.
Not a warning.
A reward.
Jaehyuk's stomach turned.
[Reward Issued]
[Title Fragment Acquired: OBSERVED]
Somin's breath caught.
"Observed," she whispered. "That's... that's for killing him?"
Jaehyuk's mouth tasted like ash.
"No," he said.
Mira looked at the floating text. "Then for what?"
Jaehyuk stared at the word.
OBSERVED.
Not a reward.
A label.
A status.
A collar.
"For proving the Tower something," Jaehyuk said.
Somin's voice cracked. "What?"
Jaehyuk looked at Minsoo.
Then at the corridor ahead.
Then at the grey coat disappearing around the corner like he had all the time in the world.
"That we break," Jaehyuk said. "That we bleed. That we keep going anyway."
The siren rose again.
And somewhere above, Floor 51 waited like a ledger page turning.
Jaehyuk adjusted his grip on Minsoo.
"We don't stop," he said.
Somin's eyes stayed on the brackets until they faded.
"We don't stop," she echoed.
The siren hit a new pitch.
[Raid Phase Escalation: 01:30]
Then the corridor lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Like the Tower blinking.
