Will woke to the sensation of a physical gravity settling into his marrow.
For a split second, his mind assumed it was Allison. The Builder was currently draped across his left side, the warm, bare skin of her shoulder pressed against his ribs. Her breathing was deep and rhythmic in the dark of the tent, her fingers curled into his chest as if anchoring him to the earth.
But as Will blinked his eyes open, trying to shake off the heavy fog of the night, he realized the weight pressing down on his [Warlord Aura] wasn't physical. It was a systemic lock.
He shifted slightly, careful not to wake Allison, only to find Maddie already awake.
The Vanguard was sitting back on her heels near the foot of the tangled bedroll, the heavy canvas blanket pooling around her knees. She was illuminated only by the faint, violet light bleeding through the tent seams, her dark eyes locked onto his. Her hair was a mess, her skin flushed, and she looked thoroughly satisfied and incredibly dangerous.
"Look who finally decided to wake up," Maddie murmured. Her voice was a low, sultry rasp that sent a fresh spike of heat through the Warlord's anchor. "I was starting to think we actually killed you."
Will let out a slow exhale, a smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth as he reached out. His hand traced the bruised, kinetic line of her hip. "It takes more than that to kill a Warlord."
Maddie leaned into his touch, a dark, teasing gleam in her eyes as she crawled slowly up the edge of the bedroll. "Big words for a guy who passed out first."
Against Will's ribs, Allison let out a quiet, groggy hum. The Builder shifted, turning her face into his chest, her sleepy voice muffled against his skin.
"Don't let her lie to you, Will," Allison murmured, her eyes still closed, her fingers tracing a lazy circle on his stomach. "Maddie's legs were shaking so hard she could barely stand up to get the water canteen."
Maddie laughed, a rich, genuine sound that shattered the quiet of the tent. "I'm a Vanguard, Al. Taking the heavy hits is literally my job description." She leaned over Allison's resting form, her eyes locking back onto Will's, the air between them thick with renewed intent. "Speaking of which. We have thirty days of invisibility, boss. Want to see if we can break your stamina stat this time?"
Before Will could pull her down, a searing cerulean interface violently illuminated the dark tent, casting harsh, digital light across their skin. The System, apparently, was done waiting.
[Conditions Met: Absolute Mutual Trust & Shared Warlord Intent.]
[Foundation Finalized.]
[Faction Synergy Complete: Warlord's Vanguard]
[Effect: 'The Shield and The Spear.']
[Buff: When fighting within 20 meters of the Vanguard, the Warlord gains +15% Armor Penetration. The Vanguard gains +15% Threat Generation.]
Deep within the dark theater of his mind, Genghis Khan let out a rumbling, satisfied laugh.
The blood of the conqueror runs true, the ancient warlord boasted, his voice echoing with archaic pride. A true Khan knows that an empire is built not just with the sword, but in the furs. You have bound the Weaver and the Shield-Maiden to your soul. Now, Warlord, wake. The empire calls.
Shut up, Khan, Will thought, though he couldn't fight the smirk.
He dismissed the prompt. Maddie rolled her eyes at the ruined mood, tossing him his armor before pulling on her own kinetic-weave suit. The reality of the morning had finally dragged him out of the furs.
Twenty minutes later, Will pushed through the canvas flap and stepped into the violet glow of the camp.
Allison didn't even look up from the glowing ember of earth magic she was holding beneath a suspended iron pot. Anticipating his pace, she simply reached out with her free hand, holding out a freshly poured tin cup of hot water right as Will stepped into reach.
He took it without breaking stride, taking a seat on a low rock beside the fire.
Maddie sat opposite him, methodically oiling the heavy iron of her broadsword. As Will sat down, Maddie paused. She rolled her shoulders, cracking her neck with a heavy sigh.
"Tell me you feel that," Maddie said, looking up with a lethal smirk. "Because right now, this fifteen percent threat generation feels like the System bolted a magnet to my spine."
"It's heavy," Will agreed, taking a sip. He could feel it too—the space between them felt loaded, a physical pressure humming with the promise of violence. "The System decided you're officially the most annoying thing in the room."
Maddie snorted, picking up her sword and standing. She took three slow steps backward, her eyes locked on Will. "The prompt said twenty meters, right? Let's test the tether."
She took five more steps away from the fire. "Still heavy."
She backed up another ten feet, nearing the edge of the cavern's moss. She stopped, tilting her head. "Okay, now it's just a mild pull. You're losing your Warlord grip on me, boss."
She took one more step.
A sharp, negative chime rang in Will's ear, and the kinetic pressure vanished. Grey warning text flickered in his periphery.
[Warlord's Vanguard: Out of Range. Buff Inactive.]
Allison let out a quiet laugh, pulling the pot off the ember with a thick cloth. "Let her wander, Will. The Vanguard gets twenty meters. My Builder's Anchor spans the whole base. You couldn't lose me if you tried."
Will took another sip, letting the notification fade.
"She's just doing the math on the aggro, Will," Allison added. "Fifteen percent extra threat means she's going to be wearing the next Alpha we fight like a backpack. She needs to know exactly how far she can kite it without breaking your penetration buff."
Maddie walked back toward the fire. The moment she crossed the twenty-meter threshold, the kinetic weight slammed back into the air.
"Exactly," Maddie said, dropping onto her rock. "I'm officially the aggro sponge. You just have to make sure you actually drop whatever I'm peeling off you. With that extra penetration stat, I expect one-shot kills. Don't make me look bad."
Will took a slow sip of his water. "I didn't need the buff for one-shot kills, Maddie. It just saves me an arrow."
Allison smiled, wordlessly tossing the thick cloth across the fire. Maddie caught it without looking, wiping the excess oil from her blade.
They mock you, Khan grumbled. A Sovereign does not let his Vanguard dictate the terms of the battlefield.
A Sovereign who wants his Vanguard to stay alive does, Will thought back.
Maddie tossed the cloth back to Allison. "Always nice to have official validation from the System, though."
"Can we put a pin in the honeymoon phase?" Bram grumbled, stomping into the firelight.
