Perhaps she was being to harsh with him? She thought as she watched Lester toss the final lump of dirt over the heap.
It had taken every sense of boldness out of her just to kiss and he called it an act of foolishness…
Why won't she be cross with him? A voice in her head asked.
All she could do was wait for her father to summon her. She was fairly certain that he would call off the engagement immediately if that were to happen.
But what did it matter?
He saw her as a foolish and wanton woman, there was no mistaking that. Pursuing him would only fuel such a view.
"Leave me, Lester."
He bowed and left her quietly.
When she glanced towards the side of the house that concealed the yard, she could see the shadow of his carriage in the distance.
He hadn't gone.
Well, what was he still waiting for?
It occurred to her that he had promised to return with her, but surely, he couldn't be intending to force her will…
Or could it be that he simply didn't want to return without her?
