The sleep just would not come. She was painfully aware that he was seated across from her, wearing an army uniform that looked too good on him to be a symbol of warfare.
"I do not have any motherly advice on how you should maintain your marriage," her mother had said. "But, I will tell you just one thing - keep whatever problems you both have to yourselves. No woman in society is your friend. Any problems you share with any woman of the ton is potential gossip material… especially when everyone is baffled by your change in groom."
She and Theodore never shared their problems with outsiders - that was a known fact. But then again, they never shared it with themselves either. Well, there was Phillip who she could tell anything… and Candace who knew the origin of the whole affair, but they couldn't help her fix whatever was wrong in her marriage.
Only Theodore could.
And he was looking at her like she was the biggest mistake he had ever made.
