It was the time of the night when the carriage stopped in front of his house. His attacker was probably not expecting him to be so reckless as to travel in the middle of the night.
Yet he had.
His eyes darted to the house. Most of the lights were out, but a few servants scurried to assist him.
She was probably asleep.
After being away for four days instead of two, she was bound to be angry with him. He felt the inner pocket for the gift he had procured.
Would it appease her?
Dragging in a deep breath, he stepped down from the carriage.
Casper came to his aid.
"Take a few days off for your hardwork." Then he patted the man's shoulder. "Whatever happened during this trip stays between us. My wife should never hear about it. Do you understand?"
Casper nodded. "Yes, my lord."
Nodding, Theo turned and ascended the steps into the house. The breeze outside was cool and soothing. It felt good to be back.
