Chapter 41: Training for the League!
The next day, after having a nice breakfast, the gang walked over to Professor Oak's lab.
"Wow, so that's the lab?" Misty said.
"Yep," Lyra said, "and this is where I started my journey. It's also where I met Pikachu and Pichu."
Pichu and Pikachu squeaked at that—they remembered that day too.
Lyra walked up to the door and rang the doorbell.
"Who is it?" a voice asked from inside.
"Hi Professor, it's me, Lyra," Lyra replied.
Professor Oak opened the door. "Ah, Mew, it is good to see you," he said, "and you too, Tomo, Misty, and Brock. Come on in."
Tomo, Misty, and Brock were amazed at how big Professor Oak's lab was.
Lyra spotted her Plusle and Minun along with Absol and S. Ditto.
"Hey, guys," she said as she ran up to them and gave each of them a hug. "How have you all been?" she asked, and they responded with a call.
After the little reunion, Professor Oak brought them into his living room for a chat. Gary was there too.
"Hey, Gary," Lyra greeted.
"Well, hi there, Lyra," Gary said. "What are you doing here?"
Then Gary saw more Pokémon next to her. He recognized Plusle and Minun and S. Ditto, but one Pokémon caught his attention—it had white fur with a leaf-like blade on the side of its head. But he didn't ask about it.
"Here for information about Indigo Plateau," Lyra said.
"So am I," he said.
"Before I answer any questions," Professor Oak said, "I have something to speak to you about, Mew and Gary."
Lyra and Gary looked at him in confusion.
Gary and the gang sat down on the living room couches. Plusle and Minun were on her shoulders, Ditto was on her head, and Absol was sitting beside her. Pichu and Pikachu were on her lap.
Professor Oak stayed standing.
"Gary and Mew," he said, "as you know, it has nearly been a whole year since you two started your journey. And I must say, both of you have made Pallet Town proud and have also become Pallet Town's two top trainers."
"Wow, thanks, Grandpa," Gary said.
"Yeah, thanks a lot. Hang on a minute," Lyra said. "What about the other two trainers that left on the same day as Gary and me?"
"Ah well, Mew," Professor Oak said, "those two are still traveling, but they will not be joining you at the Indigo League. The truth is, their battling skills do not compare to you two, so they haven't exactly succeeded as trainers."
Lyra and Gary looked at each other in amazement.
"Now I wish to check some things with you two," Professor Oak said. He switched on a computer. "First, I want your PokéDex, Gary, and Mew, I want your Xtransceiver, please."
Gary handed his PokéDex, and Lyra handed over her Xtransceiver.
"Now, according to the research," Professor Oak said, "Lyra, you have seen over one hundred different Pokémon in this region and some from other regions too, while Gary has seen only sixty Pokémon."
Lyra was amazed by that.
"Next, Gary has ten badges, and Lyra has eight badges," Professor Oak said, "and last of all, Gary has caught more than 200 Pokémon, and Lyra has caught 79 Pokémon from different regions together, which I say is very impressive."
Lyra was amazed by the amount she had caught, but she didn't care—she didn't believe catching Pokémon like crazy was important.
"Now that is all settled," said Professor Oak, handing back their devices, "the last thing to say is about the Pokémon League at Indigo Plateau."
"Where is Indigo Plateau, Professor?" Lyra asked while putting the Xtransceiver back on her wrist.
Professor Oak showed them on a map.
"To get to Indigo Plateau, you need to turn west from Viridian City first," he explained. "That will be Route 22, then you go to Route 23, and that is how you get to Indigo Plateau."
Lyra and Gary thanked Professor Oak, and Gary left to rest.
Lyra and the gang walked into the Oak Corral.
Lyra released her Pokémon: Ivysaur, Infernape, Lucario, S. Kirlia, Scyther, Growlithe, Mantyke, and Cubone.
Then she called out for her other Pokémon, and soon Lyra was surrounded by 72 Pokémon.
"Okay everyone," Lyra said, "we are entering the Pokémon League in two months' time. During these two months, we are going to train and make ourselves strong. Everyone understand?"
All of Lyra's Pokémon roared in agreement.
Tomo was playing with his Pokémon: Growlithe, Tauros, Nidoran couple, Poliwag, Venonat, Cubone, Pikachu, and Farfetch'd.
Lyra gave Kabuto and Omanyte to Tomo, and Tomo gave her his Doduo.
Later, back at the house—
Ranger Jenny arrived.
"I am here to discuss Tomo," she said.
Everyone got nervous.
She took out papers.
"These are adoption papers."
Julia explained everything.
"I have decided that Tomo should stay with you permanently."
Lyra and Tomo were shocked.
"Then this means you and I will be real brother and sister!" Lyra said happily.
Tomo hugged her.
Now he was officially part of the family.
For the next two months, Lyra trained intensely.
Her Pokémon trained in different habitats:
Water Pokémon → oceanRock/Ground → mountainsBug → forestOthers → meadows
Her two Eevees wore Everstones while preparing to evolve into Leafeon and Glaceon.
Several Pokémon evolved:
Ivysaur → VenusaurKrabby → KinglerVenonat → VenomothDoduo → DodrioMarill → AzumarillGible → GabiteMagnemite → MagnetonRhyhorn → RhydonCubone → MarowakNidorina → NidoqueenNidorino → NidokingGrowlithe → Arcanine
They also celebrated Lyra's 11th birthday with a big party.
"You know what's funny?" Lyra laughed. "I left Pallet Town as a 10-year-old, and now I'm back as an 11-year-old."
Everyone laughed.
Now it was finally time.
"Indigo League, here I come," Lyra said.
Misty and Brock exchanged looks.
A storm is coming…
And the gang set off for Indigo Plateau.
