Chapter Thirty-Three
At Sunrise, We Part
I walked back over to Silver, who was watching me intently. "Your welcoming party is on its way right now," I stated.
He just smirked in reply.
I waited impatiently, tapping my foot and pacing back and forth. I admired Chika's behavior. She was standing still, very proud to have caught "the bad guy".
Finally, after checking my pokegear to see that it was nearly five in the morning, I heard the racing of paws splashing in mud before I even saw the giant dog they accompanied.
Upon seeing me, Repede, my Arcanine, ran even faster, breaking into Extremespeed mode, at which he scooped me skyward with his head, knocking me flying. But luckily, he learned to catch me over the years.
Unfortunately, I knocked Dad backwards in the process. "Whoa, boy!" Dad chided at the over-excited Arcanine. He then came to a perfect stop.
I hopped off and rubbed my back, which kind of hurt from the impact of hitting Dad. "Nice Extremespeed, but next time don't use it on me, okay?" I patted the dog on the head, to which he gleefully barked in reply and wagged his tail.
From there, he did the trademark thing that all of my old fire types did: knocked me over and started to lick my face.
"Bad dog! Stop it, Repede!" I couldn't help but laugh while trying to keep my composure.
I knew Silver was watching, but there were some things even I couldn't control—like my overly affectionate Arcanine. He got off, I stood up, and I wiped my face in his fur. He smelled really nice; I figured Dad must've bathed him recently, though I saw mud on his flanks.
I then walked over to Dad while Repede sat like a good dog. "Here's your prisoner, Mr. Neilstone. Chika did a good job wrapping him up."
"Oh, so that's the starter Pokémon you got from Professor Elm, huh? Already evolved. I see potential there." He smiled warmly.
I rolled my eyes. Dad was trying too hard to act. I was certain Silver found this to be just a bad joke.
Repede walked over to Chika and sniffed her while wagging his tail in hello. He then walked over to Silver and licked his face once.
"I remember you too, boy," Silver said to the dog, which surprised me since for a second, he sounded like himself again. He then faced my father. "I don't get it. I thought all of Amber's Pokémon were lost in the fire."
"We were able to recover the pokeballs from the site when the CSI came to investigate. All Pokémon are accounted for." Dad said calmly.
"That's odd. When I was at the wreckage, I didn't see a single pokeball. Where'd you find them?" Silver looked confused.
"They were all in Amber's room—or what was left of it." Dad grimaced.
At the weird talk of me, Repede cocked his head to the side in puzzlement. I scratched the dog's snout to alleviate his confusion and focus it on something else.
I then turned to Dad. "I envy you, Mr. Neilstone. I'd give anything to have an Arcanine with me for traveling. Repede sure is soft."
"I'd loan him to ya, but I need him to get back to the station with our prisoner." Dad smiled.
"It's okay. Although, I do have a favor."
"What's that?"
"Your daughter owned a Lapras, correct?"
"Yeah, Speckle is back at Professor Oak's ranch. Why?" Dad looked a bit confused, but my mind was made up.
"Can you have that Lapras transported to me when you get the chance?" I asked.
"Oh? I suppose I can get that to happen. What's wrong? Your next lead is overseas?" Dad asked.
"No. I'm releasing it to the wild." I shook my head.
"You can't do that! It's not your Pokémon to release!" Silver protested heatedly and struggled against Chika's vines. "Speckle meant too much to Amber for you to just toss her away!" I actually heard traces of the old Silver in that protest.
"I happen to know some wild Lapras, and I'd think that the Lapras in captivity would feel better with its own kind. It's for the good of the Pokémon." I explained calmly.
"I see. I'll have that done then, Wolfe." Dad replied. "Alright, let's pack 'em up!"
Dad took out his handcuffs and cuffed Silver's hands, and I knew from previous experience just how that felt. Once Chika could finally release Silver, she sat down contently.
"Alright, Repede, let's get a move on, shall we?" Dad asked.
Repede nudged me and whimpered. I felt really horrible that the big guy couldn't stay; I knew that Dad needed him. I looked at the big dog and gave him a hug. He really did have the softest fur ever.
"Listen big guy, don't cry. Be proud. You're a fine police dog, and you're incredibly fast. You're a big help to the police. So you keep that big head of yours held high, you hear me? And maybe some other time I can play with you, alright?" I patted his head, and he woofed in reply.
Dad had Silver get on Repede, and then Dad got on afterward. If anything, at least I didn't have to worry about Silver escaping. No one in their right mind would jump off an Arcanine that was hitting speeds of 60+ MPH.
Once they were loaded up, I looked at Dad and said quietly so hopefully only he and Repede would hear, "Take good care of them. Repede's a fine dog, and I know Silver isn't bad at heart. It's for his own good…"
"I will," Dad replied. "Alright, boy, back to the station in Kanto. Time for an all-nighter!"
And with that, Repede was off like a flash as he disappeared into the horizon, in which the sun was just starting to rise.
