As soon as the apartment door closed behind them, the world seemed to change.
The ordinary corridor they knew now felt different. Walls and floors appeared to fade, transforming into shadows that moved slowly, like liquid black ink covering the world's surface. Cold air crept to their skin, making every breath feel heavy.
Lyra activated the circular metal artifact in her hand. Thin lines of light spread along the corridor, forming a faint path guiding them. Without that light, they might be lost forever.
Kael followed her steps, his eyes staring at the symbol on his wrist. The crack now pulsed, as if informing him that the Veil was watching their every movement.
Lyra looked down, whispering,
"Don't touch the walls or floors. Every surface here can become eyes for them."
Kael nodded. He felt a strange pressure from around the corridor. Occasionally thin black mist touched his skin, but did not hurt. It felt more like... surveillance.
Several steps later, vague shadows appeared along the corridor. Not human-shaped, but their movements clearly showed consciousness. Kael held his breath.
Lyra sighed softly.
"They are other observers. Every step we take is watched. Don't look away from this light path."
Kael stared at those shadows. One of them stopped right on their path. Its black fog clung to the air, forming dark eyes staring directly at Kael.
Kael asked softly,
"What will happen if they touch us?"
Lyra stopped for a moment, stared at that shadow, then said,
"Their touch is not physical... but can damage the mind. They read your intentions, test your fears, and sometimes... plant something."
Kael frowned.
"Plant something?"
Lyra nodded slightly.
"Something that will make you different. Something that brings the Veil closer to you."
That shadow moved slowly, as if following Kael's steps. The symbol on his wrist flickered faster. Kael felt hot energy in his hand, as if something was trying to penetrate his skin, judging his courage.
Lyra turned to Kael, her tone serious.
"Kael... every observer in this corridor is different. Some can kill your mind, some merely judge. But all can tell the Veil about you."
Kael stared at the light path guiding them.
"How long must we pass through this corridor?"
Lyra smiled thinly, but her eyes remained sharp.
"Until we reach the end. Or until they decide to attack."
Before them, the corridor seemed endless. Shadows moved with their steps, and the air trembled with whispers that could not be heard, but were felt.
Kael looked at the symbol on his hand once more. He knew one thing for certain: the Veil was watching, and this was only the beginning of something far greater.
Lyra walked faster, directing Kael to the light path. She whispered,
"Welcome to the world behind the Veil, Kael. A world you can no longer ignore."
And as both of them stepped deeper, the first shadow leaned forward, its dark eyes staring with an intensity that made Kael's blood rush.
The Shadow Corridor... had just begun to demand its first price.
