The library annex smelled, as Ayaan had always thought it should, of paper and concentrated effort. It was three floors of shelves, narrow reading desks, and the particular hush of people who had agreed, without speaking, that the outside world could wait.
Ayaan had a regular desk. Third floor, corner, beside the window that looked out over the parking lot — which is to say, beside the window that looked out over the roof of the library annex, which looked like a parking lot. He had sat at this desk for three years. It had the right light, the right quiet, and absolutely no one had ever tried to have a conversation with him there.
This was no longer true.
He had arrived at ten-fifteen on a Saturday morning, which should have been safe — Lina was, from what he had observed, a person who treated Saturday mornings as a protected species, not to be disturbed. He had opened his Kierkegaard. He had arranged his notes. He had been, by any measure, a man at peace with his surroundings.
Then the chair across from him scraped back, and Lina dropped into it with the particular energy of someone who had already been awake for a long time and was using momentum as a substitute for rest.
"How," Ayaan said.
"How what?"
"How did you find this desk?"
"I asked the librarian." Lina was pulling an enormous quantity of items from her bag — books, papers, three different pens, a small pouch of what appeared to be snacks — and arranging them on the desk with methodical purpose. "I said: there's a tall boy with dark circles and a philosophy book who sits somewhere on the third floor. She pointed me here immediately."
"She shouldn't have done that."
"She seemed very happy to do it, actually. I think she's fond of you."
"I've never spoken to her."
"Right." Lina looked up, something flickering across her face — half amusement, half something more careful. "She's fond of the version of you that exists in the building. The one that comes in at the same time every day and reads quietly and doesn't bother anyone. People find that kind of consistency comforting."
Ayaan considered this. He found it faintly alarming to have been observed without knowing it. "And you?" he said. "Do you find it comforting?"
"I find it interesting," she said, which was not the same thing.
She opened a textbook — Communications Theory, third edition, the spine cracked from heavy use — and clicked open one of her pens. The particular pen appeared to be bright green. She underlined something on the first page with the conviction of someone who had already decided it was important before reading it.
Ayaan looked at his Kierkegaard.
Forty seconds passed.
"You're not going to ask what I'm researching," Lina said, without looking up.
"No."
"Most people ask."
"I assumed you'd tell me when you wanted to."
A pause. "That's either very respectful or very disinterested."
"Both, possibly."
She made a small sound — not quite a laugh, not quite agreement — and went back to her textbook. Ayaan went back to Kierkegaard. The library settled back into its proper silence, which was now a slightly different silence from before, one that had a person on the other side of it.
He turned a page. She underlined something else. Outside, the grey morning did nothing in particular.
For twenty-two minutes, they worked in complete quiet, and it was, Ayaan noticed without wanting to notice, one of the more comfortable silences he had sat inside in recent memory.
The trouble began at eleven o'clock.
It began because of a vending machine, specifically the one on the third-floor landing, which was — as Ayaan had known since his second year — fundamentally unreliable. It had a particular fault with the second row, third column: the coil would turn, the product would shift forward, and then stop. Right at the edge. Hovering. It had been doing this for three years and Facilities had apparently decided it was the vending machine's personality and not a mechanical failure.
He heard it happen before he saw it: the specific mechanical groan, then silence, then a long, sustained silence that meant someone was standing in front of it in the particular private hell of a person who has paid for something they cannot retrieve.
He heard Lina's voice, low and controlled: "Okay. Okay, that's fine."
Then: "That is absolutely not fine."
Then the sound of her palm hitting the side of the machine, twice, with decisive force.
Ayaan put his pen down and walked to the landing.
Lina was standing in front of the machine with her arms crossed, staring at a packet of biscuits that was suspended approximately two centimeters from freedom. Her expression was one of profound personal offense, as though the machine had done this specifically and deliberately.
"Don't," she said, without turning around.
"I wasn't going to say anything."
"You were going to say something logical about how I should just ask for a refund."
"The refund process takes two weeks and requires a form from Facilities."
"See?" She turned, and the expression on her face was so genuinely aggrieved that Ayaan felt, against his better judgment, the very specific pressure of suppressed laughter. "That's the logical thing. I don't want the logical thing right now. I want the biscuits."
"Have you tried—"
"I've tried shaking it, hitting it, reasoning with it, and briefly threatening it. Nothing worked."
"You reasoned with the vending machine."
"I was desperate."
Ayaan looked at the machine. He had, over three years of proximity to this specific fault, developed a working solution — not elegant, but functional. He inserted a coin from his pocket, selected the item directly above the trapped packet, and when the new item fell it knocked the suspended packet loose. Both dropped into the tray.
Lina stared. She reached into the tray and retrieved both packets with a reverence usually reserved for archaeological finds.
"How did you know to do that?"
"It's a known fault. The weight of the second item dislodges the first."
"You've done this before."
"A few times."
She looked at him with an expression that he was beginning to identify as the one she wore when she was recalibrating something — not surprised exactly, more like adjusting a lens. "For yourself, or for other people?"
He paused. The honest answer was: both, though the times he had done it for other people had not been planned. He had simply been there, and the machine had done its thing, and walking away had felt strange.
"Both," he said.
She held out one of the packets to him. He took it, because it seemed like the right thing to do and also because he was, despite his earlier claim, somewhat hungry.
They stood in the landing and ate biscuits in the thin winter light coming through the small window above the stairwell. It was not a planned moment. It had no particular significance that Ayaan could assign it. And yet it was the kind of moment that has a specific weight to it — the kind you carry around for a while without knowing why.
"Can I ask you something?" Lina said.
"You generally do without asking."
She smiled, but it was the smaller version. "Do you actually believe it? That nothing means anything?"
Ayaan ate a biscuit. He considered the question seriously, because it deserved a serious answer. "I believe that meaning isn't inherent. That we make it, or we don't, and neither choice is more correct than the other. But believing meaning isn't inherent is not the same as believing nothing matters."
"What's the difference?"
"If meaning is inherent, it exists whether or not you engage with it. If it's constructed—" he paused, finding the words. "If it's constructed, then the act of constructing it is the thing that matters. The reaching for it. Not the destination."
Lina was quiet for a moment. She was looking at the window, the pale sky beyond it, and her expression was still and thoughtful in a way that was different from her usual animated attention. It was the expression of someone who had heard something and was holding it carefully, checking its weight.
"So you think the trying matters," she said softly. "Even if you're not sure what you're trying for."
"Yes."
She nodded slowly. She did not say anything else for a moment. Then she looked back at the biscuit packet and ate another one, and the small, still moment passed and she was bright and warm again, her voice back to its usual easy register.
"That's the least bleak version of nihilism I've ever heard," she said. "I think it might actually be optimism in disguise."
"It absolutely is not."
"It really, really is."
By two in the afternoon they had, entirely without planning it, colonized the corner desk together. Lina's materials had expanded to cover approximately sixty percent of the available surface, which Ayaan had noted and chosen not to address. His notes were stacked in a precise tower on his forty percent.
She had, at some point, produced a small portable speaker from her bag — roughly the size of a large walnut — and asked, in a tone that suggested she was going to do it regardless, whether ambient music was acceptable.
"What kind of ambient music?"
"Rain sounds and piano."
"That's acceptable."
The music played very softly, mostly rain, a piano threading through it at long intervals. Ayaan found it, unexpectedly, better than silence. He did not say this.
They worked. She asked him, at one point, to explain the difference between Kierkegaard's three stages of existence — the aesthetic, the ethical, the religious — because she had come across a reference to them and her textbook didn't elaborate. He explained them. She listened with the focused attention she gave everything, her chin resting on her hand.
"So the aesthetic stage is basically living for pleasure and feeling, the ethical stage is living by rules and duty, and the religious stage is — what, surrendering to something bigger than yourself?"
"Roughly."
"And he thought you had to go through all three, in order?"
"He thought the movement between them was driven by despair. Each stage eventually shows you its own limits. The aesthetic life — living only for experience — eventually feels hollow. So you move."
Lina was quiet for a moment. "What if you're stuck in the first one? The aesthetic stage. What if you keep filling your life with things that feel good in the moment and you know, somewhere, that it's hollow, but you can't — what if you can't make yourself move?"
Something in the way she said it made Ayaan look up from his notes.
She was looking at her textbook. Her pen was still. Her expression was ordinary — perhaps slightly too ordinary, the studied neutrality of a person who has asked something and immediately regretted the asking.
"Then you're in despair," Ayaan said carefully. "Which Kierkegaard thought was not a failure. Just the beginning of movement."
"Hopeful of him."
"He was not generally considered hopeful."
She laughed, short and quick, and picked up her pen again, and the conversation moved on. But the question stayed in the air between them, thin as smoke — there, and then not there, but leaving a trace.
At four o'clock, Lina began packing her things in the way that signaled she was leaving — slightly chaotic, items disappearing into the bag in the order she picked them up rather than any logical sequence.
"Same desk next week?" she said, tucking the tiny speaker away.
"I always use this desk."
"Right." She slung the bag over her shoulder. "So — yes."
"So — yes," Ayaan agreed.
She was halfway to the stairs when she turned back. The light from the small window was behind her, catching the edge of her hair, and for a moment she was just a silhouette against a grey afternoon.
"Hey, Ayaan?"
"Yes."
"Thanks for the biscuits."
"I retrieved them. I didn't provide them."
"That's what I said." And she was gone, her footsteps on the stairs light and quick, fading down through the building.
Ayaan sat for a moment in the newly empty corner. The rain sounds continued from the speaker — she had, he noticed, forgotten it on the desk. He reached over and picked it up. It was very light. He would have to return it Thursday.
He turned it over in his hands. Rain and piano, from something the size of a walnut.
He thought about what she had said: what if you know it's hollow, but you can't make yourself move? He thought about the way she had asked it, looking at the textbook, not at him. He thought about the practiced brightness she had slid back into, smooth and seamless, the moment she heard herself ask it.
He was a person who believed in paying attention. He paid attention to arguments, to language, to the structural logic of ideas. He was, he had always thought, good at noticing things.
He was beginning to suspect that he had been, this whole time, noticing the wrong things about Lina.
Not the smile. Not the warmth. Not the enormous handwriting or the dying plant named Barthes or the way she argued about comedy versus tragedy with genuine conviction.
The thing worth noticing was underneath all of that. It was quieter and less visible and it had appeared, three times now, in three different shapes: a question she deflected, a laugh that escaped before she meant it, a sentence that slipped out before the performance caught it.
Something was there. Something that the smile was working very hard to cover.
He didn't know what it was yet. He wasn't even sure he should want to know.
He put the speaker in his bag, next to his notebook, next to the sticky note that was still between pages fourteen and fifteen.
He was not the kind of person who reached for things.

That night Ayaan sat at his desk at home and opened his notebook.
He wrote: Kierkegaard said despair is the failure to become yourself. But what if you've become so good at performing yourself that you've forgotten which one is real?
He stopped. He looked at the sentence.
He had been writing about Kierkegaard.
He was not sure, anymore, that he was writing about Kierkegaard.
