Chapter 17 - A Name That Shouldn’t Exist

The sky returned to normal.

But the world didn't.

Sirens filled the air.

Not just a few this time—

Dozens.

From every direction.

Helicopters circled above the ruined district, their blades cutting through the fading remnants of the storm. Searchlights swept across the destruction—collapsed buildings, shattered roads, unconscious Hunters.

And at the center of it all—

Kael.

He stood still.

Unmoving.

Quiet.

But inside—

Everything was different.

"…Grow."

The word echoed in his mind.

Soft.

Yet impossible to ignore.

Kael clenched his fist.

"…That thing…"

It wasn't like the others.

Not like the Sentinel.

Not like the entity.

It felt…

Higher.

Something beyond the system.

The thought unsettled him.

But before he could go deeper—

"DON'T MOVE!"

A sharp voice cut through the air.

Kael looked up.

Dozens of armed personnel had surrounded him.

Not just Hunters this time.

Military.

Special units.

Snipers positioned on rooftops.

Weapons aimed directly at him.

And behind them—

More Hunters.

Stronger ones.

Different.

Kael could feel it instantly.

"…These guys…"

They weren't like the earlier team.

Their presence was heavier.

More refined.

Controlled.

One of them stepped forward.

A man in his early thirties.

Calm expression.

Sharp eyes.

His aura—

Different.

Not overwhelming like the entity.

But solid.

Unshakable.

"…S-Rank," Kael muttered quietly.

The man stopped a few meters away.

Studying him.

"…You're Kim Kael."

It wasn't a question.

Kael tilted his head slightly.

"…And you are?"

A brief pause.

"…Han Seojun."

His voice was calm.

But carried authority.

"I'm here to take control of this situation."

Kael almost smiled.

"…A little late for that."

Silence.

The tension thickened.

Around them—

The soldiers tightened their formation.

Snipers adjusted their aim.

Han Seojun didn't react.

Instead—

He asked:

"…What happened here?"

Kael stared at him for a moment.

Then—

"…A Gate opened."

Han Seojun's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…That wasn't a normal Gate."

"…No."

Another pause.

"…And you?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

His mind flashed—

The void.

The figure.

The words.

"Your future."

He exhaled slowly.

"…I survived."

That answer—

Wasn't enough.

Everyone knew it.

Han Seojun took a step forward.

"…You're unregistered."

Kael said nothing.

"…There's no awakening record. No system ID. No classification."

A pause.

"…And yet…"

His gaze sharpened.

"…You're stronger than most A-Rank Hunters."

Silence.

"…Possibly even beyond that."

The air grew heavier.

"…That shouldn't be possible."

Kael met his gaze.

Calm.

Unshaken.

"…A lot of things shouldn't be possible."

For a brief moment—

Neither of them moved.

Then—

Han Seojun spoke again.

"…You're coming with us."

Same words.

Different weight.

This time—

It wasn't just an order.

It was a decision.

Kael looked around.

At the soldiers.

At the Hunters.

At the weapons aimed at him.

Then—

He laughed softly.

"…You really think that's going to work?"

The atmosphere shifted instantly.

Several Hunters stepped forward.

"Don't resist."

"We don't want to escalate this."

Kael's eyes flickered.

The shadows beneath his feet moved slightly.

Unnoticed.

Uncontrolled.

Dangerous.

"…Escalate?"

His voice dropped.

"…You don't even know what that means."

The ground cracked.

Slightly.

Han Seojun noticed.

His eyes sharpened.

"…Everyone, stand down."

The command was immediate.

Absolute.

The soldiers hesitated.

"…But sir—"

"I said stand down."

Reluctantly—

They obeyed.

Weapons lowered.

But not completely.

Han Seojun stepped closer.

"…Listen carefully."

His voice was calm.

But serious.

"…Right now, you are a risk."

A pause.

"…But you're also a potential asset."

Kael raised an eyebrow.

"…Asset?"

"…Someone like you—"

He stopped.

Then corrected himself.

"…Whatever you are…"

"…You don't belong out here alone."

Silence.

"…Come with us."

"…We can figure this out."

Kael stared at him.

Long.

Carefully.

For the first time—

He considered it.

Not because he trusted them.

But because—

He didn't know what he had become.

"…And if I refuse?"

Han Seojun didn't hesitate.

"…Then we treat you as a threat."

No anger.

No hostility.

Just truth.

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…Fair enough."

He looked at the sky.

Now clear.

Peaceful.

As if nothing had happened.

"…But I've already been called worse."

Silence.

Then—

Kael stepped forward.

Not attacking.

Not resisting.

Just—

Walking.

The soldiers tensed.

But didn't move.

Han Seojun watched him closely.

"…You're coming?"

Kael stopped in front of him.

"…For now."

A pause.

"…But don't get the wrong idea."

His eyes darkened slightly.

"…I'm not under your control."

Han Seojun nodded once.

"…I wouldn't expect you to be."

The tension eased.

Slightly.

Behind them—

Daniel let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding.

"…He's going…"

Relief.

Mixed with fear.

Because deep down—

He knew.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

As Kael was escorted away—

Dozens of eyes followed him.

Fear.

Confusion.

Curiosity.

But above all—

One thing remained.

Uncertainty.

Because no one—

Not the Hunters.

Not the government.

Not even the System—

Could define him.

And somewhere—

Deep within the unseen layers of reality—

Something stirred.

Watching.

Waiting.

Because now—

The anomaly had a name.

And names—

Had power.

Kael Draven.

A name that—

Shouldn't exist.
