It had been over a month since the Jeju Island incident, and the world had yet to fully recover from the seismic shift. The balance of global authority had tilted sharply eastward, and nowhere was this more apparent than inside Japan.
Under the decisive hand of Goto Ryuji, the Japan Hunter Association had undergone a complete restructuring. With Matsumoto Shigeo removed and disgraced in absolute silence, Goto had consolidated power effortlessly, bringing his own powerhouse syndicate the Draw Sword Guild into the fold as the de facto executive wing of the Association. The bureaucratic red tape that once choked the nation's response time was burned away, replaced by a ruthless, military-style efficiency.
Japan was basking in its newfound status as a true superpower, and the engine behind that prestige was the relentless activity of its two new National Level Hunters.
Over the span of just four weeks, Grimmjow and Ulquiorra had torn through the country's dungeon registry like natural disaster. Together or working completely solo, they had cleared over fifty A-rank gates and four catastrophic S-rank dungeons.
For the mining and collection teams that followed in their wake, entering a gate cleared by the brothers was a surreal, almost terrifying experience. Where other top-tier assault teams left behind battered battlefields, broken weapons, and corpses suitable for harvesting, the aftermath left by the brothers looked like ground zero of an orbital strike. Entire cavern systems were reduced to smooth, melted trenches of glass; mountain-sized boss monsters were found either neatly cleaved into microscopic dust or completely erased by residual pillars of emerald and cerulean heat.
During the few instances where they had joined joint operations alongside other Japanese guilds, the clearing times were measured not in hours, but in mere minutes. The brothers moved with such casual, overwhelming speed that the S-rank raid leaders barely had time to draw their weapons before the boss room was already silent. Recognizing the sheer absurdity of sending standard support squads with them, Goto had officially granted the two Arrancar unilateral clearance, the absolute authority to enter and dismantle high-tier gates completely unassisted.
Naturally, the rest of the world refused to remain passive.
Foreign embassies and international hunter bureaus flooded Tokyo with diplomatic envoys. Some arrived with offers so mind-bogglingly outrageous that even Goto had to do a double take before drafting formal rejections. Blank-check budgets, private island territories, diplomatic immunity covering entire continents, and vaults of Kamish-grade runestones.
A few desperate foreign agents had even bypassed the Association entirely, attempting to approach the brothers directly on the streets of Shinjuku.
Those encounters never ended well for the diplomats.
Ulquiorra simply looked through them as if they were empty air, dismissing their elaborate contracts as meaningless strings of human currency. Grimmjow, on the other hand, was far more vocal. He had condescendingly laughed in the faces of high-ranking Western ambassadors, casually crushing briefcases full of sovereign bonds into dust between his fingers before telling them that if their entire nation wanted to buy a single second of his time, they'd better offer a fight that wouldn't put him to sleep.
Yet, beneath the political maneuvering and the brothers' record-breaking raid logs, a far more pressing anomaly was quietly escalating beneath the surface of the world.
The gates were multiplying.
Ever since the Jeju raid had drawn to a close, the rate of dungeon manifestations had exploded across the globe, with Japan bearing the brunt of the surge. In the past few weeks alone, over thirty new A-rank gates had spontaneously formed across the Japanese archipelago. A statistical spike that completely shattered the historical records of the past decade. It was an unnatural concentration of magical density, a scale that broke every established norm the Association had relied upon for years.
Worse still were the two rogue S-rank dungeon breaks that had erupted concurrently two weeks prior in neighboring prefectures. Any other nation would have declared a state of emergency, evacuating entire cities while praying for foreign intervention. Instead, the two brothers had simply split up. Grimmjow took the northern breach, obliterating the emerging horde in a storm of blue beam, while Ulquiorra descended upon the southern gate, pacifying the disaster before the local news crews could even set up their tripods.
The threats had been neutralized, but the underlying tension remained. The dimensional fabric of the world was fraying at an accelerated pace, as if something was preparing to push through from the other side.
For reasons no meteorologist could explain, the world itself seemed to be reacting to the rapid proliferation of the gates.
The Draw Sword Guild and the Association monitoring divisions had noticed a bizarre pattern: whenever these high-density gates manifested, the local weather took an immediate, violent dive. Severe squalls, unnatural barometric drops, and electrical storms broke out across the prefectures almost simultaneously with the tears in space. At first, the tactical analysts feared that the atmospheric unrest was a precursor to imminent dungeon breaks. Fortunately, thanks to the sheer aggression of Japan's strike teams, the gates were consistently cleared long before the timers could tick down to that catastrophic threshold.
Even now, both Ulquiorra and Grimmjow were deployed inside yet another S-Rank gate that had spontaneously formed in the mountainous outskirts of Japan.
Inside the quiet, fortified executive office of the Association headquarters, Hanekawa set a fresh stack of environmental readouts onto the desk.
"The atmospheric interference is climbing again," Hanekawa said, her brow furrowed with obvious concern. "This level of gate density... it shouldn't be statistically possible. A-rank and S-rank dimensional portals are supposed to follow strict spatial cooldowns and yet, we're getting clusters appearing within miles of each other."
Goto sat behind the polished desk, his hands clasped beneath his chin, his sharp eyes narrowing as he stared at the red cluster maps.
"You're right," Goto said with a low and measured voice. "This is entirely out of the ordinary. The last time this sheer volume of gates opened without warning was over a decade ago when dungeons first arrived in our world right before the initial awakening."
He paused as a grim silence settled over the room and the weight of his own words sank in.
"I have a bad feeling," Goto continued, his jaw tightening. "Something massive is about to happen. A shift of some kind. Fortunately, we have more raw manpower now thanks to those two brothers, but we can't afford to be complacent. We need to start stockpiling resources and preparing the entire hunter infrastructure for whatever is coming."
Hanekawa glanced down at her tablet, checking the synchronized mission timers. "Speaking of them... I wonder why those two aren't out yet. They entered the gate nearly an hour ago. That's unusually long for them, considering their average clear time is under fifteen minutes."
A faint, wry smirk broke through Goto's stern expression. He leaned back in his leather chair and waved a dismissive hand.
"Don't worry about those two," Goto remarked smoothly. "With their absurd speed, I'm certain they've already reached the boss room by now. They're probably just having some fun."

Inside the S-Rank Gate
Beyond the portal, there was no cavern ceiling, no underground labyrinth, and no standard sky.
The environment defied the very laws of gravity and geography. A thick, pale-blue fog rolled endlessly across the expanse, shrouding everything in a quiet, dreamlike haze. Suspended in the vast, open air was a bizarre and surreal architecture of land. There were colossal, interlocking bridges and archways of moss-covered stone and earth that twisted in all directions like the petrified roots of an impossible world tree.
These massive, arching pillars of rock curved, branched, and linked together in mid-air, forming a dizzying, three-dimensional shapes of floating terrain. Below them lay a bottomless abyss lost in dense mist; above them, identical curved stone arches stretched endlessly into the pale gloom, completely blotting out any natural light.
On the crest of one of the highest moss-draped stone bridges, the lone, tiny silhouette of Ulquiorra stood motionless, overlooking the vast, quiet labyrinth of floating earth as the cold wind brushed past his dark hair, waiting for the silence of the hollow world to break.
And he did not have to wait long.
The suffocating quiet of the misty abyss shattered in an instant. A deafening crack of thunder tore through the gloom as a jagged bolt of violet lightning struck one of the colossal floating archways a few hundred meters away. The stone bridge detonated in a violent eruption of moss, pulverized rock, and electrical sparks.
From the heart of the billowing smoke, the sharp, static screech of a Sonido echoed through the open air.
Grimmjow materialized on the crest of a neighboring stone pillar, his boots skidding across the damp moss. A deep frown creased his forehead for a split second before his lips peeled back into a savage, predatory grin. Without missing a single beat, he gripped the hilt of his zanpakuto and slashed horizontally straight into the lingering cloud of debris.
A massive, crescent-shaped blur of electric-blue light burst from the edge of his blade. Driven by the sheer kinetic weight of his swing and saturated with dense Reiatsu, the crescent cut through the air, completely blowing away the smoke and cleaving the top of the fractured arch in two.
As the fog dispersed, the source of the lightning revealed itself.
Perched atop a jagged outcropping was a gargoyle, an imposing, obsidian-skinned monolith easily ten feet tall. Massive, leathery wings extended from its back, shedding static with every twitch. In its clawed grip, it wielded an ornate, twin-pronged spear forged from dark metal that crackled violently with surging electrical arcs. The beast's pitch-black eyes flared with twin points of violet lightning as it locked its gaze onto Grimmjow.
"Found you, bird-brain," Grimmjow growled.
The gargoyle did not reply with words. It kicked off its perch, the stone beneath it crumbling as it rocketed forward.
They met in the empty space between two suspended bridges.
CLANG! CLANG! KRA-KRA-CLANG!
The air became an orchestra of high-speed violence. The dark spear and the Arrancar's gray steel collided in a blinding flurry of sparks. Every thrust of the spear left a burning trail of violet plasma, while Grimmjow parried each blow effortlessly. The shockwaves from their clashes ripping chunks of moss and stone from the floating arches dozens of yards away.
Grimmjow's eyes flashed with manic delight. He parried a vertical overhead strike, spun on his heel in mid-air using Reishi footing, ducked cleanly under a lightning-fast thrust aimed at his throat, and stepped inside the monster's reach. With a low snarl, he brought his zanpakuto around in a vicious side swipe meant to bifurcate the creature's armored waist.
The gargoyle's obsidian lips twitched into a cold, mocking smirk as Its dark eyes glowed with blinding radiance and an ancient, resonant voice rumbled from its chest:
"Song of the Clouds: Burst."
Grimmjow's eyes narrowed in irritation. "This trick again?!"
Before his blade could connect, an omnidirectional nova of supercharged lightning detonated outward from the gargoyle's torso. The sheer concussive force exploded against Grimmjow's chest, blasting him backward through the misty sky.
Grimmjow flipped three times in mid-air, righting himself on a platform of solid Reishi. He looked up just in time to see the gargoyle tracing an intricate, glowing ring of electrical runes in the open air with the tip of its spear.
"Song of Lightning: Barrage."
The circle flared, and in an instant, hundreds of crackling lances forged purely from condensed violet lightning materialized within the ring. With a single flick of the spear, the entire arsenal screeched toward Grimmjow like a swarm of guided meteors.
"Annoying piece of rock!" Grimmjow yelled and in a burst of static, he vanished.
SH-TK. SH-TK. SH-TK. SH-TK.
Grimmjow became a blur of static and blue afterimages, executing a rapid series of Sonido through the dense shapes of falling lances. He weaved through the bombardment with terrifying agility, twisting his torso as one lance grazed past his cheek, vaulting off another in mid-flight, and kicking a third off course with the heel of his boot. Behind him, the missed projectiles slammed into the floating archways, turning massive stone formations into falling avalanches of glowing rubble.
Slipping effortlessly through the final line of fire, Grimmjow closed the distance in the blink of an eye, reappearing inches from the gargoyle's face.
He drove his blade down in a brutal downward cleave. The gargoyle raised its twin-pronged spear horizontally, barely catching the strike.
Locked in a fierce struggle of raw strength, their faces were separated by mere inches of crackling steel. The gargoyle let out a low, gravelly chuckle, looking down at Grimmjow with utter condescension.
"Commendable agility, human," the beast mocked, its voice vibrating through the hollow expanse. "To dance through the song of heaven is no small feat. Even amongst your own kind, none stand a fraction of a chance against my spear. You are merely delaying the inevitable collapse of your fragile frame."
Grimmjow's grin suddenly vanished, replaced by an expression of utter, cold disdain.
"Human?" Grimmjow scoffed, his voice dropping into a dangerously quiet tone. "Don't flatter yourself, you overgrown decoration. You're talking down to the wrong predator."
Without warning, Grimmjow casually took his left hand off the hilt of his sword. While holding the massive gargoyle's spear in place with only his right arm, he extended an open palm, placing his fingertips directly against the creature's sternum.
"Cero."
The gargoyle's dark eyes widened in sudden, absolute terror as the violet lightning around its body was violently drowned out by an intoxicating crimson glow.
BOOOOOOOOOOM!
A massive, roaring torrent of blood-red energy erupted point-blank from Grimmjow's palm. The blast completely swallowed the gargoyle's upper body and plowed through the massive stone bridge beneath their feet, shattering the ancient mossy arch into billions of fragments. The wave of destruction carried relentlessly forward across the misty expanse, tearing through three more interlocking archways and colossal floating pillars a mile in the distance.
