Chapter 9 - The secret of the dark forest part 9

Aarav couldn't move.

It felt like his body had turned to stone, every muscle frozen under the weight of that gaze.

The forest around him had gone completely silent.

No wind.

No insects.

No sound.

Only her.

Watching.

Waiting.

His breath came out uneven as he took a slow step back.

The leaves beneath his feet didn't crunch.

They didn't make any sound at all.

That was wrong.

Everything about this place was wrong.

"Who… are you?" he managed to whisper.

The question barely left his lips before the air shifted.

The glowing eyes flickered.

For a moment, they dimmed… almost like she was… reacting.

Then—

A voice.

Soft.

Distant.

But clear.

"You shouldn't have come back."

Aarav's heart skipped.

The voice didn't echo.

It didn't come from one direction.

It came from everywhere.

"I didn't come here before," he said quickly, trying to keep his voice steady.

A pause.

Then—

A low, almost broken laugh.

"You did," she replied.

"You just don't remember."

His mind went blank.

Not remember?

"What are you talking about?" he asked.

The shadows around her began to shift.

Slowly… very slowly… her form started becoming clearer.

Not fully.

Never fully.

But enough for him to notice—

She wasn't standing.

She was… floating.

Just inches above the ground.

His chest tightened.

"You left," she whispered.

The words felt heavy.

Accusing.

Like they carried years of silence and anger.

"I don't even know you," Aarav said, taking another step back.

But the moment he did—

She moved closer.

Without walking.

Without sound.

Just there.

Closer.

Faster than he could react.

His back hit something hard.

A tree.

He was trapped.

"You knew me," she said softly.

Her glowing eyes dimmed slightly… revealing a faint outline of her face.

Pale.

Almost lifeless.

"But you chose to forget."

Aarav shook his head, panic rising.

"That's not true," he said. "I've never seen you before."

Silence.

Then suddenly—

The temperature dropped.

Drastically.

His breath turned visible in the cold air.

"You're lying," she whispered.

This time—

Right next to him.

His eyes widened.

She was no longer in front of him.

She was beside him.

How…?

"I don't lie," he said quickly, his voice breaking.

A long pause followed.

Then slowly…

Something changed.

The anger in the air faded.

Replaced by something else.

Sadness.

Deep.

Unbearable sadness.

"You promised," she said.

The words hit him like a shock.

Promised?

"I don't remember any promise," he whispered.

And that was the wrong thing to say.

The glowing eyes flared brighter.

The shadows around her twisted violently.

The forest responded.

Branches creaked.

Leaves rustled without wind.

"You promised you wouldn't leave me here," she said, her voice trembling now—not with anger, but with something far worse.

Pain.

Aarav's heart pounded.

"I don't even know where 'here' is!" he said, desperation creeping into his voice.

"You do," she replied.

And then—

She raised her hand.

Slowly.

The air around them shifted again.

This time—

It wasn't cold.

It was… heavy.

Like reality itself was bending.

Aarav gasped as sudden images flashed in his mind.

Quick.

Broken.

Incomplete.

Him.

Standing in this same forest.

But younger.

Rain pouring around him.

That same girl—

But clearer.

Alive.

Not just shadows.

"Wait…" he whispered, clutching his head.

"What is this?"

"Your memory," she said softly.

Another flash.

He saw himself running.

Leaving.

Not looking back.

And her—

Standing there.

Watching him go.

"No…" Aarav staggered. "That's not real…"

"But it is," she said.

The glowing eyes dimmed further.

For the first time—

He saw tears.

"You left me," she whispered.

The words broke something inside him.

Because suddenly…

It didn't feel like a lie anymore.

It felt familiar.

Too familiar.

"I…" he struggled to speak. "I didn't mean to—"

"Don't," she cut him off.

Her voice was quiet.

But final.

"You always say that."

Silence fell again.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

Aarav's chest tightened as the truth—whatever it was—started clawing its way back into his mind.

But before he could say anything else—

She stepped back.

Slowly.

The shadows swallowing her form once again.

"You came back," she said softly.

"So this time… you don't get to leave."

A chill ran through him.

"What do you mean?" he asked.

Her glowing eyes were the last thing visible in the darkness.

Watching him.

Waiting.

"For the first time," she whispered,

"You're going to remember everything."

Before Aarav could react—

The world around him shattered.

Not physically.

But something deeper.

The forest blurred, the trees twisting into shadows as a sharp pain shot through his head. He gasped, dropping to his knees, clutching his temples.

"No… stop…" he groaned.

But it didn't stop.

The memories came rushing in.

Uncontrolled.

Unwanted.

Unavoidable.

Rain.

Heavy rain.

The same forest—but darker, wilder, alive with fear.

A younger version of him stood there, breathing heavily, his clothes soaked, his hands shaking.

And her.

She wasn't a shadow back then.

She was real.

Standing right in front of him.

Crying.

"Aarav, don't go," she pleaded, her voice breaking. "You promised you wouldn't leave me here."

His heart clenched as he watched it unfold.

He remembered this.

Or at least… he was starting to.

"I have to," his past self said, his voice cold, distant. "You don't understand."

"Then make me understand!" she cried, stepping closer. "Why are you doing this?"

Silence.

Even in the memory, the silence felt heavy.

Then—

"I didn't have a choice," he said.

The same words.

The same excuse.

Aarav's breath hitched in the present.

No…

That couldn't be him.

But it was.

"I trusted you," she whispered, her voice trembling.

Her eyes—those same glowing eyes—filled with tears.

"And you left me here… alone."

The memory flickered violently.

Her hand reaching out.

His body turning away.

Walking.

Leaving.

Not looking back.

"No…" Aarav whispered, shaking his head. "I wouldn't do that…"

But the memory didn't lie.

It showed everything.

The moment he stepped out of the forest—

And the moment something changed behind him.

A scream.

Her scream.

Sharp.

Terrifying.

Not human anymore.

Aarav's eyes snapped open.

He was back.

Back in the present.

Breathing heavily, his body trembling uncontrollably.

The forest stood still around him.

Dark.

Silent.

Waiting.

And she was there.

Right in front of him.

Closer than ever.

"You remember now," she said softly.

It wasn't a question.

It was a fact.

Aarav looked at her, his eyes filled with shock… and guilt.

"I…" his voice broke. "What happened to you?"

For a moment, she didn't answer.

Then slowly…

A faint, broken smile appeared.

"You left me," she whispered.

"And the forest… kept me."

A cold chill ran through him.

Because suddenly—

He understood.

She wasn't just part of the forest.

She was the forest now.

"To be continued… The forest chose her."
